connected. we'll explain it in "the skinny" on this thursday, january 19th from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to everyone. we're going to start the half hour with the new concerns about the health of george h.w. bush and his wife barbara. the former first couple both in a houston hospital this morning. >> mr. bush is in intensive care after a procedure to clear a respiratory blockage. and mrs. bush was admitted as a precaution because she hasn't been feeling well. the former president and his wife hospitalized at this houston hospital. bush's office saying he was admitted saturday for shortness of breath and was expected home soon. a spokesperson saying he was in intensive care from an acute respiratory problem. doctors sedated him to perform a procedure to protect and clear

his airway. >> he's the most indomitable spirit. just like his bride is. we're hopeful. >> his wife hospitalized with symptoms of fatigue and coughing after weeks of feeling sick. >> they are as fine a couple as we know. and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. >> the bushes celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary earlier this month. president bush famously marking his birthdays with parachute jumps. right up until the anyone of 90. he was hospitalized in 2015 with a fractured bone in his neck. and christmas, 2014, for respiratory problems. he's often spotted these days celebrating family birthdays or taking in a football game. days before the inauguration, the former president wrote to donald trump saying he was so sorry he and barbara couldn't travel to washington on the advice of his doctor. the elder bush wasn't a donald trump supporter but wrote we will be with you and the country in spirit.

the vice president-elect. meanwhile, democrats being told they're not planning to pull the rug from anybody. but tom price had to answer tough questions about his stock trades. he insisted he did not know his broker was buying stocks in a drug company before introducing legislation that would have benefitted the company. and a new tragedy in the central part of that country. an avalanche covered a three story mountain hotel. authorities say at least 30 people are missing when the mountain of snow slammed into the hotel, they're having a difficult time getting rescue vehicles to the scene because roads are covered in deep snow. there are some fatalities, but they are hesitant to give a number. >> that same region has been struggling since last year's earthquake that killed about 300 people. just yesterday, four quakes hit

that area, trapping some in their homes. all four are magnitude 5.1 or greater. felt 150 miles southwest of rome. 30 people are now missing. more rain is expected in houston after a deluge brought the city to a stand emergency crews made dozens of water rescues as thunderstorms washed out roadways. officials say they received more than 65 calls from stranded motorists. some were stranded for as long as five hours. and ice storm across parts of the northwest. freezing rain, ice and fallen trees forced the closures of roads and highways in oregon and washington state. and storms caused power outages in portland, oregon. what's the forecast looking like for other parts of the country? >> let's check in with justin povick. >> thank you. and good morning to you. mountain snow heavy at times over the sierra, nevada. including interstate 80 and soaking downpours especially
