♪ live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." ♪ now at 11:00, o.j. simpson is just hours away from the parole hearing that will determine if he will be a free man, and tonight legal exp rele. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. the parole hearing comes mr. than 20 years after the murder trial that forever made the san francisco native infamous. >> lilian kim is here with more. >> reporter: dan and ama, not only has simpson served the minimum nine years of his sentence, he has been a model inmate. even so, there are those that think he should stay where he is in prison. the murders of nicole simpson and ron doldman, the chase, the memories of that playing out again as he faces papa role

hearing. he could be released after serving the minimum nine years of a 33-year sentence for armed robbery and kid mapping. for scott osler who lived in l.a. at the time of the trial of the century, it is hard to separate. >> reporter: i'm convinced and i followed closely, he murdered two people in cold blood with a knife. >> reporter: where that will be on his mind, is anyone's guest. the heist involved a sports memorabilia dealer. >> i thought i was confronting friends and retrieving my property. >> 33 years. it was outrageous for a case we all know, or at least it appeared to be a lark or a folly. so he's been punished significantly. >> reporter: simpson's attorneys will point out his good behavior in prison. regardless, casual observers we talk to are divided. >> he should have been in yale the first time when he killed his wife. i think that is -- i really hope he does not get away with it again. >> he was just getting his own

near hayward, but today's killing is different. >> when i looked over, i could see the man's body on the floor facing forward off the curb, and the deputies have a car seat. >> reporter: sky 7 shows an overturned stroller. the victim, a 30-year-old man who lived in the neighborhood, was pushing his three-month-old baby. the baby is okay. >> definitely it is a message someone is trying to send. so we'll be definitely looking at the fact it could be a targeted killing. >> the victim's family approached the crime scene, devastated by their loss. >> he was pushing a stroller, like the most innocent thing you could do on a street, you know. >> it is disgusting. >> oh, yeah. >> it is sad, it is sad. nobody is safe in this neighborhood. >> reporter: alameda county sheriff's deputies are interviewing witnesses and looking for surveillance video. >> some of the leads appear to be promising that might point us in the right direction of finding a suspect and possibly an associated vehicle with this crime. >> reporter: neighbors say they're plagued by gang violence. deputies are looking into that

angle as well. >> one time car came right here next door, blasted the house. i mean this is a terrible area. >> reporter: child protective services is now involved with making sure the child is safe. katie utehs, "abc 7 news." all right. we are staying on top of breaking news from mariposa county tonight. that huge wildfire burning outside of yosemite national park is growing. late tonight we learned from kral fire that the detwiler fire has spread to 48,000 acre, up from 45,000 acres earlier in the day. it is only 7% contained so we have a long way to go, and 29 structures have been destroyed. "abc 7 news" reporter laura pic tonight. >> reporter: it is a fire that's grown tremendously in just 24 hours, and one that shows no signs of letting up. with flames at least 50 feet in the air. burning with abandon through

trees and dry brush in rural mariposa county as the detwiler fire approaches 50,000 acres. >> the fire is still spreading? >> absolutely. as of this morning we only had 7% containment. >> reporter: along highway 49 in rural county, the detwiler fire left its mark. the orange skies, the ground charred and smoldering for miles in every direction. and down the road, the town of mariposa stands silent and mostly deserted as its 2200 residents have been ordered to stay away for a second day. with flames closing in on two sides, the residents of colterville were given an emergency evacuation order. >> be safe. >> got the animals all packed up. we are waiting on the neighbors to follow us down now. >> i'm not going to worry about it. i'm alive. i mean i'm not going to stay there for it to get to me. we'll come back, we'll rebuild if it happens. >> colterville is not going to burn.

>> chuck murphy told us he has the car packed but no plans to leave. >> the reason i'm staying here is i love my community dearly, and i'm going to do what i can to see that that stays away. >> reporter: those big flames, this is what they left behind, and with this fire less than 10% contained cal fire can give no estimate as to when it will be fully contained. in mariposa county, laura anthony, "abc 7 news." let's continue our team coverage with "abc 7 news" meteorologist sandhya patel. she is tracking the weather conditions that the crews are facing battling this fast-moving fire. sandhya. >> yeah, dan. it is cooler near the fire lines and the relative humidity has doubled since this afternoon. that should help the firefighters. what is not going to help the firefighters is the wind the next 24 hours coming from different directions. so it is going to be erratic as you will notice, and it will get breezy tomorrow afternoon and into the evening hours. dramatic picture of the smoke plume going all the way up into

tahoe and even into reno. this picture from state line, it was a following on twitter who said you couldn't even see the sunset it was so bad. dense smoke advisory until 5:00 p.m. thursday for the tahoe area andon. we have an air quality until thursday at 4:00 p.m. covers a good part of the state. ama. >> all right, sandhya. thank you so much. breaking news now from san francisco where streets are blocked after a fatal accident involving a truck and motorcycle. happened around 8:30 at geary and laguna. the biker died at the scene. the truck driver is cooperating with police. new at 11:00, a man is accused of rape on the stanford campus. the school's department of public safety issued a crime alert saying a 53-year-old man raped a female at student housing on campus at 1:30 this morning. university police didn't say if they made an arrest or whether a student was the alleged victim. the next generation of cal train is about to begin and with it comes a pledge of better service and less road congestion.

governor brown will be in millbrae on friday to commemorate the start of converting the system to electric trains. cal train says it will lead to more frequent service and reduced green house gas emissions. cal train expects to roll out electric trains around the beginning of 2021. the "abc 7 news" app told you about some big baseball news tonight. check it out. we sent out this push alerd. panda-monium. pablo sandoval strikes minor league deal to return to the giants. >> larry beil is here. talk about a price. >> i have to admit when i heard the story breaking i was like, why, why were the giants open to bringing pablo back. they can get panda for next to nothing, and if he can somehow resurrect his career anywhere it might be in san francisco. why not? you have panda hats to consider. he left san francisco for a $95 million deal with the red

former presidential nominee john mccain is facing the fight of his life tonight, cancer. doctors found a brain tumor after they removed a blood clot above the senator as left eye last week. it is an aggressive cancer that will require chemo and radiation. to night president trump tweeted, melania and i send our thoughts and prayers to senator mccain, cindy and their entire family. get well soon. from across the isle, former president obama tweeted, john mccain is an american hero and one of the bravest fighters i've ever known. cancer doesn't know what it's up against. give it heel, john. hillary clinton wrote, john mccain is as tough as they come. thinking of john, cindy, their wonderful children and their whole family tonight. 32 million more americans would lose their health insurance over the next ten years if the senate outright repeels the affordable care act. that new estimate from the cbo

is more than the estimated 22 million that would lose coverage under a repeal and replace plan. the vice president and white house officials are working into the night to try to get all gop senators to vote yes on a repeal plan. president trump says he never would have appointed jeff sessions attorney general if he thought sessions would recuse himself from the investigation into russia meddling in the 2016 election. the president calls the recusal extremely unfair, during a wide ranging 50-minute interview with the "new york times." sessions was the first sitting senator to back mr. trump's presidential bid. next week, president trump's son don jr., his former campaign chairman paul manafort and son-in-law jared kushner are all expected to testify before senate committees looking into russia. there are new developments tonight on the medical emergency at a south bay jail. four inmates were rushed to the hospital after a suspected drug overdose. county jail with the investigation under way tonight. katie. >> reporter: ama, the sheriff's office tells me three of the four inmates have been released from the hospital and are back here in jail at this hour. the fourth inmate is also expected to make a full recovery. four inmates being held in the older south wing of the main jail were taken to hospitals around 12:30 in the afternoon, the victims of a suspected drug overdose. >> we have crime scene investigation in there. they'll interview any inmates in the area. all of these inmates also will be interviewed to figure out what was ingested. >> reporter: what it was and how it got into the jail. the investigation forced a lockdown for several hours. jail reform advocates were disheartened the hear about the incident. otto lee is a former member of the blue ribbon commission that investigated the jail. he says it is understaffed. >> we believe it is something to do with the fact that the periodic cell check that kwooed to take place more frequently, unfortunately has not been conducted as frequently as they used to be. the safety check for cell is not

only for the officers who work there, but also for fellow inmates as well. >> reporter: in its latest budget, the sheriff's office received funding to install body scanners in the jail. sergeant richard glennon says it should help. >> they will be similar to body scanners at the airport. they will be able to hopefully detect some of the substances. >> the inmates in the case were held in medium security, the investigation will determine if they now face additional charges. in san jose, katie marzullo, "abc 7 news." all right. time to turn to our weather. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it for us closely. more heat, sandhya? >> more heat, but not until the weekend, dan and ama. you have a break for a couple of days. if you are going to the giants came tomorrow evening against the padres, temperatures will be about low 60s and dropping to the upper 50s at at&t park. a good idea to take a light jacket with you or a light sweatshirt. it should be nice looking weather for the ball game. as you look at this live picture

from the "abc 7 news" exploratorium camera at peer 15, you will notice the visibility is good at this vantage point. not so great if you look at live doppler 7 around places like half moon bay where the fog socked in the area, and the san mateo coast is fog ee as well. we will see more fog towards the morning commute. temperatures right now primarily in the 50s and 60s. you have to get out towards brentwood to get up to 72 degrees. a live look from the emeryville camera, looking back towards the bay bridge there. a little cooler tomorrow, height heating up this weekend. if you're not a fan of the hot weather, we have a place for you. for thursday, 7:00 a.m., expect follow near the coastline. temperatures begin in the 50s. temperatures will be in the 50s to 70s range at noon time, and bright and breezy by afternoon. low 60s to upper 80s by evening hours. temperature will fall toward the

coast. the fog is near the coast and not solid along the entire coast. we will see patches around the bay as we head to the morning commute. you might want to allow extra time for the commute. south bay temperatures look like this. 79 in san jose, 77 in santa clara, sunshine for you on the peninsula. 74 in redwood city. palo alto 60 degree, in half moon bay fog lingering. 59 in daly city. 55 down soun san francisco. 85 in santa rosa. east bay you still need the sunscreen. low 70s for oakland. hayward, 75. castro valley, fremont, inland areas will be warm but not see the low 90s as we did today. 88 in antioch, 6 in livermore, 85 in concord. the sun will be shining this weekend as well but patchy fog. here is a look at the summer microclimates for the coach. beach weather, low to mid 60s. bright bay side and warm. inland is where it is going to sizzle. yes, it will get hot. a good idea to download the
