apart. the victims that got out covered in blood, rushed to the hospital. the gunman who wrote of white nationalism was armed with semi-automatic weapons and two rifles. police running to the scene. tonight what we just learned about the gunman and what our correspondent just aedpresidt t. does heee wte natnasi threat au andze in new zealand tonight. >> reporter: tonight, chaos and shock. unimaginable horror as a deadly anti-muslim terror attack on two separate mosques in new zealand. at least 49 worshipers dead, 48 more injured, as witnesses tonight describe the terror when the first shots rang out. >> it was 1:42 and the gun starts shooting.

>> everybody just runs to the back doors just to save themselves. >> reporter: witnesses say a gunman wearing all black all black, clad in a helmet and bulletproof vest, entered the al noor mosque in the city of christchurch. he then ruthlessly opened fire during a packed friday prayer service. this man had blood splattered on his shirt. he said he hid when the gunman walked in and he was the last to escape alive. >> i laid down on that bench.... i'm just keeping my fingers crossed i'm alive. the blood is splashing on me. i'm thinking oh, my god. >> reporter: is video surfaced apparently showing the suspect live streaming

vicious attack in graphic detail, a video we will not show here. the gunman moves from room to room, firing his automatic weapon for some six minutes, killing at least 41 men, women, children in the first mosque. terrified worshippers trying to scale the walls to escape. >> i saw some people had blood on their body and some people were limping. on the floor the bullet shells -- so many, hundreds. >> reporter: the video then appears to show the gunman continuing his rampage., driving to his next target -- the linwood mosque, three miles away. seven more victims were murdered as armed police swarm the scene, running, guns drawn. in this video, posted on social media, a police vehicle seen mmca the ad. two officers, guns pointed towards the vehicle. moments later, the officers making an arrest. police say one suspect, a white man in his late 20s, originally from australia, has been arrested and charged with murder. >> two explosive devices attached to the suspects vehicles have now been found and they have been disarmed. >> reporter: meanwhile, two other armed suspects have been taken into custody, their association at this hour

unknown. this as a rambling hate-filled message was posted online around the time of the attack, purported to be written by the suspect. in it, praising norwegian mass murderer anders behring, and american dylan roof, who killed nine people in the charleston church attack in 2015, saying he had been planning this attack for two years. he also writes about president donald trump as a renewed symbol of white identity. the president, meanwhile, has sent his condolences and new ze minister. >> i told the prime minister that the united states is with them all the way, 100%, whatever they need, we will be there. a major terror attack before. so many of theees escaping terror in war elsewhere. >> nay chose to make new zealand their home. it is their home. they are us. the person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not.

started working to extract data from the two black boxes today. an aviation source says it could be monday before anything is made public. on the ground, investigators are interested in the tail section of the jet, the horizontal stabilizer which controls nose up and down movement, specifically the jack screw which moves that part. a source says it was found in a nose down position. with the 370 jetliners towed and parked around the world, american airlinesety feature which nosed down the aircraft, a feature few pilots knew about and heatedly complained to boeing about in a meeting. >> after the lion air tragedy we learned that there was equipment on our aircraft that we were not aware of. it wasn't even on our books. >> wasn't in their books. that was alarming when we heard that. david kerley live with us from
