a federal judge is ordering bill cosby's wife to testify in a lawsuit filed by seven women who claimed the comedian sexual attacked them. bill cosby is facing a defamation suit separate from the criminal charges filed against cosby wednesday in pennsylvania. camille cosby says the law does not force her to testify against her husband. her lawyers say they will appeal. >> wayne rogers has died. wayne rogers played trapper john mcintyre and alan alda's side-kick in the early years of m.a.s.h. >> you're not getting in the ring with that guy until i hear him speech. >> i just called in a chicken. >> we are not throwing in the towel. >> i'm ready to throw in the pwhole laundry! >> rogers left m.a.s.h. after 15 -- in 1975 after three seasons. he continued to be a money manager. spokeswoman said wayne rogers died thursday from complications of pneumonia. he was 82. coming up on the "morning news." a year-end campaign shake-up.

visit for details. "star wars" creator george lucas says he is sorry. and new hope for those with a devastating form of muscular dystrophy. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports on a potential breakthrough in treating an incurable disorder that involves muscle weakness and early death. researchers used a new gene editing technique in mice that allows scientists to remove a defective stretch of dna. it worked in mice, but it's uncertain how it would react in the human immune system. new york post reports on resignations of three top adviser to gop presidential candidate ben carson. the resignations including carson's campaign manager and communications director.

business manager and questioned whether he is ready for the oval office. the deputy campaign manager also stepped down. it comes just five weeks before the iowa caucuses. the "minneapolis star tribune" reports a federal judge temporarily blocked an arkansas abortion law. the law would have placed new limits on how the abortion bill is administered. it was supposed to take effect today. planned parenthood filed a lawsuit challenging it on monday. now both sides will have time to fully present arguments. the "los angeles times" reports on george lucas' apology to disney. the "star wars" creator said he is sorry for his criticism over disney's handling of the franchise. lucas said he had sold his characters to, quote, white savers, in a recent interview with charlie rose. disney says it's moving forward with "star wars" in an exciting direction. on the cbs "moneywatch." the dow finished the year in negative territory. brian webb has those stories and more.

requested unemployment benefits last week, but the level remains near historic lows. the labor department says applications for jobless jumped by 20,000. employers have been adding 210,000 jobs a month in 2015. the markets will be closed new year's day. thursday, the dow dropped 178 points and the nasdaq lost 58. the deadline is midnight for sprint and verizon customers hoping to cash in on a 158 million dollar refund. the federal communications commission reached an agreement with both companies after a cramming investigation. cramming is when customers were charged for third-party text messaging without their permission, typically adding about $10 a month to the bill. netflix wants to help parents trick their kids into giving them a little privacy for new year's eve. the streaming service is helping parents to lie about the clock striking 12:00. netflix is bringing back a

forecast in some cities around the country. in sports, the college football playoff championship game is set. top ranked clemson will play second ranked alabama. in the orange bowl, clemson outscored oklahoma 21-0 in the second half. tigers quarterback deshawn watson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. the unbeaten tigers are now 14-0 and they beat oklahoma 37-17. the cotton bowl was a rout. second ranked alabama. overwhelmed michigan state 38-0! bama quarterback jay coker completed 20 of 35 passes including two touchdowns. heisman trophy winner derrick

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. here is another look at this morning's top story. people all around the world welcomed in 2016 with fireworks and celebrations. security was tight in new york city and across europe amid terror fears. packer fans weren't to let snow get in the way of their team's game against the vikings. the packers called on more than 600 fans to help clear lambeau field of snow ahead of the regular season finale on sunday. fans earned 10 bucks an hour for their help. unlike snow covered wisconsin, the northeast has

>> reporter: it's not just here in blakesly, pennsylvania. web cams at other resorts such as blue mountain, camelback mountain and shawnee mountain, some reporting they have lost 20% of their business so far. colder temperatures arrive tonight as the new year arrives and dalbert is hoping to make up for lost time. >> we will get this thing started by the latter part of the weekend and early next week, with the cold air coming in, we will be back on our feet and get rolling again. >> reporter: we learned more than 70 ski resorts are closed across the northeast, but those numbers are likely to change with temperatures expected to drop in the new year. demarco morgan, cbs news, blakesly, pennsylvania. the 127th rose parade gets under way in a few hours in california. yesterday, the police escorted the 44 colorful floats to pasadena for the parade. many roses are used to create the floats. people began lining up along the

president obama and the first family rang in the new year in hawaii. he is on his annual two-week vacation. on thursday, the president played golf with high school friends. he spent more than six hours hitting the links. the family wraps up their vacation on sunday.

announced plans to open three new shelters to house an unexpected influx of unaccompanied migrant children. the shelters will be on federal property in colorado, florida, and new mexico. children in the shelters are mostly between the ages of 14 and 17. they stay about a month before it's decided whether they will be deported. the year 2015 was a big year in politics. the race for the white house produced plenty of drama, and we saw a historic nuclear deal with iran. craig boswell takes a look back. >> reporter: the outsiders took the early lead in the crowded gop race for president. >> i'm at number one by a lot! >> reporter: donald trump pulled out front with a slew of controversial comments, including a ban on muslim immigrants and a wall to keep mexicans from crossing the border. >> they are bringing drugs. they are bringing crime. they are rapists. >> reporter: ben carson and carly fiorina also surged in early polls. >> unfortunately, i believe we have out of time. >> reporter: following the death

joe biden decided against making a third run for the white house. >> i'm going to be your president too. >> reporter: hillary clinton was forced to defend from an attack from the left with senator bernie sanders running with a liberal platform. >> establishment politics is not going to work. >> reporter: clinton weathered nearly 11 hours of congressional questions about the attack on a u.s. consulate in benghazi in 2012. she also came under fire for using her private e-mail server for official communications as secretary of state. the obama administration restored diplomatic relations with cuba after 54 years. president also signed a deal with iran that would limit its nuclear program. >> this deal is our best means of assuring that iran does not get a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: senate republicans fought back, saying the deal would actually help iran get a nuclear weapon, but the democrats beefed back the challenge. fed up with infighting among conservative and moderate republicans house speaker john boehner called it quits. >> been an honor to serve in this institution. >> reporter: congressman paul ryan reluctantly stepped up to take the job.
