police say they thought he had a gun.. but later learned it was a cellphone in his hand. 8 news now's mauricio marin has more on what the family is looking to find out from the investigation. ((danielle steagall/mother: "right now i'm hurting and very angry. very angry ." )) ((mauricio marin)) a very emotional mother is grieving the loss of her 23 year old son keith childress. with dozens of his friends and family members....danie lle steagall stood where police shot childress on new years eve. ((danielle steagall/mother: 'just trying to figure it out figure it out. it's still unbelivable to me. i don't beleive it." )) ((mauricio marin)) childress' uncle says he was with the 23-year old when authorities moved in to take him down. childress was wanted for several violent felonies in arizona. ((vince matlock/uncle "they screamed out us marshalls keith freeze and he just kept running." )) ((mauricio marin)) vince matlock says when metro police were called in to help assist catch childress after he ran...they were given bad information. ((vince matlock/uncle: "they treated him like an attempted murder suspect and shot him accordinly because he had a

((mauricio marin)) we have learned childress had been convicted for aggravated assault, burgarly and armed robbery. and when police say they went after childress they told him to put down what they thought was a gun in his right hand. but authorities say he refused and advanced toward them. that's when officers opened fire. they later learned it was a cellphone in his hand. ((danielle steagall/mother: "i want justice for my son and i'm going to get justice for my son>" )) ((mauricio marin)) as family and friends light candles and hug each other as they deal with their loss. his mother plans to keep pushing for answers. ((danielle steagall/mother: "it didn't have to end that way." )) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) sergeant robert bohanon and officer blake walford have been identified as the two involved in the shooting./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > police are on the hunt... for the person or people responsible for a deadly shooting. it happened just before 3 p-m yesterday... on craig road near las vegas boulevard. according to metro investigators... the man who was killed... started a fight which turned into a shooting. another man was also hit...

(( )) > ................ weather headlines. mild sunday, mountain snow and valley rain on the way this week with a series of wet storms. lows will stay above freezing with this weather pattern. ................. high clouds moving over the valley through the weekend. plan on partly sunny skies today. you can see some areas around the valley, not in the valley already having some wet weather. as this storm system moves in, plan on comfortable day today, but we have a slight chance of showers this evening and then every day for the remainder of the week. higher elevations snow and lower areas seeing rain showers. temperatures will stay in the normal range with highs mainly just below where they should be this time of year. no snow at lower elevations with the temperatures this week. ................. looking at today, our neighborhood forecast showing

but a man inside one of the homes thought the teens were breaking in... and shot at them. peyton was hit in the arm and police say peyton and his friends were unarmed and did not try to break into the house. oklahoma' s stand your ground law allows the use of deadly force only if there is peril: (((voice of: steven lemmings/police chief - "and that's where the district attorney is going to have to decide whether // the homeowner could use deadly force in that situation." )) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) cole player... and honor's student. he remains in the hospital but is said to be stable./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > studying the effects of drought. a look at the new technology shedding light on the issues facing california forests. discovering new ways to study trees after four years of drought. the carnegie airborne observatory is taking to the sky with high- tech lasers to scan the thousands of acres of forest. researchers look at it as having x-ray vision that produces images of the health of every single tree. the red areas are severly drought stressed... while blue areas are healthier. dedication. why the hundreds of volunteers say shoveling snow for long hours was worth it. and back here at home... snow might not be in the forecast... but rain is. make sure to grab an umbrella on your way out to work. we could be seeing showers every day this week.///
