((brian loftus)) but that rain caused lots of accidents on the roads... and big headaches for those traveling out of mccarran. ((kirsten joyce)) many flights were delayed for hours... with tens of thousands of people traveling here for c-e-s.. which starts today.
to call ahead if you're flying out of las vegas. ((brian loftus)) at last check with mccarran... it seems as though flights are heading out on time.. /// ((sherry swensk)) the national weather service is also tracking how el nino is affecting our valley: ((jim harrison/national weather service: "this year is very strong, up to the strongest one ever measured potential for increase storm activities here in the southern us is high.")) ((sherry swensk)) meteorologist jim harrison told us the foggy conditions we saw yesterday are rare for the valley. he ads the rain is good news to help ease the drought... but the rain we're getting this week isn't enough. we need considerable rain for several winters in a row to make a real difference. /// let's get to sherry with a look at today's weather.

metro police at their monthly "first tuesday" meeting.. to focus on road safety. as vanessa murphy reports... a vigil was held for one of the most recent victims. ((sheldon cooper jr.//victim's son: ya know, everyone here had a lot of heart for my dad.)) ((vanessa murphy)) sheldon cooper junior stands just feet from where his father of the same name was killed. instead of tears, he offers words of forgiveness for the drivers accused of hitting the 47 year old man while he was riding his motorcycle one week ago. ((sheldon: we're truly sorry for everyone ya know, especially the drivers that were out there for the incident and everything. we know it's not completely your fault and we know you guys are going through a lot, too.)) ((vanessa murphy)) the family is joined by members of different motorcycle clubs, including tribe which cooper was part of. the father of four is one of the 125 people killed in 2015 on the roads metro police patrol. ((captain rich fletcher/metro police: as a community, it should be a major red flag going up, as like why did we have this many fatalities?)) ((vanessa murphy)) captain rich fletcher is hosting first tuesday at the northwest area command....
focus this night is traffic safety. ((fletcher: we only have so many cops. there's not enough cops for every intersection so it really comes down to increasing our enforcement, education, talking with city and county engineers about the engineering of future streets, but it's really about being engaged as a community member.)) ((vanessa murphy)) back at the vigil... ((nat of rain )) ((vanessa murphy)) cooper says deaths like his father's are too common in the las vegas valley. ((sheldon cooper, jr./victim's son: all i ask is for people to look both ways and to stop at stop signs because it literally could save somebody's life.)) ((brian loftus)) cooper told us he thought it was amazing that even with the rain.. people showed up at the vigil and that many of the candles remained lit. /// ((brian loftus)) > henderson police are also making sure this year is not a repeat of last year on our roads. for the next 2 weeks, officers will now target severeal different streets for saturation patrols... thanks to a 200-thousand dollar grant from the nevada department of public safety. the areas they'll be patrolling are known for high speeds and complaints.
enforcement and education.. to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads. /// ((brian loftus)) > a man is in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times last night. the stabbing happened on cambridge... and then police say the victim drove himself to flamingo. they say a black male suspect stabbed the victim two to three times... and then took his wallet and cash. he was taken to the hospital... but we do not know his condition. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > the man and woman accused of shooting and killing a man outside a 24- hour fitness... made their first court appearance. 19-year-old megan hippie and her boyfriend, 27- year-old kyle staats... both face several charges including murder for the death of 42- year-old neil gandler. hippie reportedly admitted to police that she and staats were burglarizing vehicles.. when they came across gandler sleeping in his car. that's when she says staats shot him even after gandler plead "not to do it". a preliminary hearing has been set for january 20th. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > north las vegas police arrested a man suspected of a new year's day murder. 29-year-old shawn glover is
a 44-year-old man inside a home... near centennial and lamb. police say multiple people were inside the home at the time of the shooting. they believe it stemmed from an argument. /// ((brian loftus)) > the president delivered an emotional speech about what he would do to combat gun violence. ((kirsten joyce)) the memory that made him break down in tears as he explained his executive actions. actions aimed at curbing gun violence... "common sense steps" that respect the second amendment. as brian webb reports... during his announcement, the president broke down in tears. (obama) every time i think about those kids it makes me mad - and by the way, it happens on the streets of chicago every day... an emotional president obama was announcing what he would do by executive action to curb gun violence when -- memories of these victims -- 20 first- graders from newtown, connecticut -- six or seven years old -- brought the most powerful man in the world to tears. the president vowed to do something about gun violence in america. "the gun lobby may be holding congress hostage right now, but they cannot hold america hostage." the centerpiece of the presidents plan is to expand background checks: ---requiring all gun dealers-- even those who sell firearms at gun shows and on the internet-- to be licensed and conduct background checks;
make checks more efficient and effective. --and increasing mental health treatment and reporting to the background check system. the president calls the measures "common sense" ... but the issue of stricter gun laws remains a controversial topic: (jim clary) background checks are great and i'm all for them but i don't want to see guns taken away from americans (bob grainger / gun owner ) "if they want to get a gun they're going to get it; the bad guys are always going to have them." there have been 13 mass shootings since president obama took office in 2008. the fbi says it conducted a record 23 million background checks last year. brian webb for cbs news, new york. a russian hairstylist has started designing hats with your own hair. as you can see in this video... he separates the hair into sections.. starts wrapping it into a bun on top of the head.. and then carefully loosens the hair to create the rims of the hat. the hairstylist used 2 full cans of hairspray to create this look. /// let's get to sherry with a look at today's weather.

security council will meet today to discuss claims... that north korea successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test. if they can confirm this... it would mark the first time the country has ever tested a bomb of this type... which experts say is more powerful than an atomic bomb. brian webb has the latest. a representative from the white house says the u.s. cannot confirm a north korea hydrogen bomb test. but is calling on the country's leaders to abide by
commitments... the surprise north korean state tv announcement called the event a 'perfect success"...citing pyongyang's 'legal right' to defend itself against u-s aggression. the statement was followed by the release of a picture allegedly showing the country's leader, kim jong un, signing off on the test. (juan zarate/ cbs news national security consultant) the real danger for the u.s. is whether north korea has intentions to demonstrate their abilities as far as the pacific. news of the event came after a 5- point-1 magnitude earthquake was detected near a known north korean nuclear test site. south korea's president quickly condemned the detonation...sayin g the test "is a threat on our people's survival and future. u-s ambassador to japan- caroline kennedy - expressed similar views: (caroline kennedy/ united states ambassador to japan) "we stand with japan and our partners and allies in solidarity in the face
japan's military has now deployed reconnaissance aircraft to verify the north's claims. if confirmed, this would be north korea's fourth nuclear test. brian webb for cbs news.
