11:00 pm
witness comes forward to tell us exactly what happened./// < news music voice over: "now, nevada's first choice for news. this is 8 news now at 11" > ((dave courvoisier)) > a feuding couple might be responsible for a serious crash that injured three people in the southwest valley. thanks for joining us, i'm dave courvoisier. ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) and i'm patranya bhoolsuwan in for paula tonight. vanessa murphy was the first reporter at the scene of this crash... she's live near warm springs and durango with more on how it all unfolded. vanessa? ((vanessa murphy)) dave and patranya, this is what's left to see now....the spray paint from the investigation which helps reveal how the crash happened.... police say two cars going in opposite directions here collided.... because a couple inside one of the cars may have been fighting. ((nat from video )) ((vanessa murphy)) this cell phone video provided to 8 news now shows the moments after a crash on warm
11:01 pm
southwest valley. ((richard bornhoeft/driver: the car had passed me.)) ((vanessa murphy)) richard bornhoeft says he saw this white sedan earlier at a shopping center down the road. ((richard: on the passenger side, the door would open, some stuff would fall out, the car would swerve. then they're go a little ways, the door would open, the car would swerve. then they got behind traffic and shot up the turn lane and cut a whole bunch of people off and ran a red light.)) ((vanessa murphy)) metro police say the couple inside the car may have been fighting when it crossed lanes into oncoming traffic and hit this pickup truck. these are cell phone photos also provided to 8 news now by a witness.... the woman driving the truck was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.... same for the female passenger in the sedan... and the man driving who may be her boyfriend....was taken to u-m-c trauma with life threatening injuries....after he was trapped and had to be pulled out.... ((strader: as far as did he intend to drive get in a a head on collision with another vehicle, unknown at this time.))
11:02 pm
((vanessa murphy)) borhoeft says he's visiting from wisconsin ((richard: everybody drives a little faster down here, i understand that to a point, but there is not much consideration for other people when they're driving.)) ((strader: the moral of the story is, when you're driving down the road and you're doing anything other than driving, you're putting everybody at risk.)) ((vanessa murphy)) so again, the driver of the sedan is at the hospital with life threatening injuries. if he survives, he may receive a citation or face charges. depending on what police find out in this investigation. dave? ((dave courvoisier)) vanessa, have you learned anything else about the couple? ((vanessa murphy)) the car had texas plates.... a witness tells me the woman said she and her boyfriend had been fighting... and police tell us it looks like the couple may have even been living in their car because there was so much stuff inside. back to you.// ((dave courvoisier)) > the animal control scandal surrounding boulder city
11:03 pm
bill conger tendered his resignation earlier this evening. conger dropped a criminal case against former animal control supervisor mary jo frazier when she retired from her job. an investigation revealed frazier illegally killed 91 healthy animals instead of trying to find them homes. the revelation of the killings caused public outrage and now the clark county district attorney is reviewing frazier's case. a spokesman for boulder city told us they would issue a statement on the chief's resignation tonight... but that has not happened yet./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) we are getting a better picture of how sex education in clark county will be changing come this fall. this follows more than a year of intense, often contentious, conversations between the school board and members of the community. at tonight's public meeting though..the mood is quite different: < ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) it was an almost an empty room .. not what we're used to seeing at the clark county school board meetings... especially those involving the topic of sex. ((amey esparza/seac member: "tonight's meeting much better than last 6 months or so of

bhoolsuwan)) amey esparza is one of 8 members of the sex education advisory committee... meeting for the first time this year to go over new sex ed curriculum for clark county students. ((parent: "nobody is a better advocate for my kid than me.")) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) following last september's contentious community meeting, the school board voted on topics to include in a more comprehensive sex education curriculum. one that would include things like how students can obtain birth control and how to define different types of sexual abuse. ((latonya dawson/health educator: "i feel we are moving in the right direction which is great.")) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) only a handful of people spoke out monday night's meeting. one parent did step up to insist that sex ed may still be better taught outside classroom, potentially in a video format. ((vivian harrison/parent: "the video could be accessible on infinite campus along with relevant materials for parents to review.")) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) but for now it appears sex education in clark county is stepping away from an abstinence- based model.

who had a baby at 16 while a student here in las vegas ...she says change is a long time coming when it comes to sex ed in school. ((amey esparza: "let's give them info they can use to to help themselves make good choices.")) > ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) the recommendation s set forth by the sex ed advisory committee still need to be approved by the school board. the new curriculum will only apply to kids in 8th through 12 grades. the trustees did vote to include topics like cyberbullying and dangers of sexting for kids in 5th grade ... as part of their health class curriculum.// ((dave courvoisier)) > if you had plans to choose your child's next school with the help of the state's education savings accounts... put those plans on hold. a district judge pressed 'pause' on nevada's school choice program today... just weeks before money was expected to flow to parents for private school tuition. a preliminary injunction was ordered today for state treasurer dan schwartz to stop implementing the program pending
11:06 pm
the republican- backed program allows parents to claim more than 5-thousand dollars in state per-pupil school funds each year for school expenses. a coalition challenged the program with a lawsuit in august, saying it would divert money from public schools... possibly to be used for sectarian purposes... violating the state's constitution. governor sandoval backs the program... he responded tonight with a statement saying in part: "this ruling makes clear what i have believed all along: the best avenue is to obtain an expedited and final ruling by the nevada supreme court. thousands of parents across nevada are waiting for an answer."/// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > a young man is under arrest and charged... in the murder of his father in their henderson home. tonight police have 22-year-old daron clanton in custody at the henderson detention center. he's accused of shooting and killing his 54- year-old father after a fight just before noon. officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at the time of the shooting.
11:07 pm
investigation, police obtained a warrant to re-enter the home to look for evidence. a neighbor told us there weren't any unusual signs surrounding the family: ((maggie carrillo - neighbor: "i've been here 15 years and i've never seen anything myself as far as first hand or heard of anything going on." )) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) henderson police told us they have not been called to the house for any domestic issues in the past. while the coroner has yet to release the name of the victim... records show the home is owned by kevin lewis clanton and maria 'f' clanton. they've owned the house since 1993. this is the city's first homicide investigation of the new year./// tonight... we're learning more about an accident by a bus stop that left a woman dead on saturday. she saw: ((sharaine lanier / witness: "i actually saw the bus coming down and it looked like it was going pretty fast, like try to come to a halt, and it completely knocked the whole bus stop over. // i saw the lady, like fly up, like over the bus." ))
11:08 pm
lanier tells us she was at the wild wild west across the street from the bus stop near tropicana and dean martin drive when it happened. 39 year-old jooyoung do was killed. we've learned do was a researcher for a university in south korea and was in town for c-e-s. 22 year-old jamal nichols was driving the r-t-c bus when it drove up on the sidewalk. sharaine says do wasn't able to avoid the bus: (( sharaine lanier / witness: "she was sitting down and next thing you know she saw the bus and she got up to look and it was -- it's like she got frozen, she couldn't even move or anything." )) ((dave courvoisier)) sharaine tells us she ran over to see if she could help the woman, but knew immediately that her injuries were fatal. she said that nichols started freaking out after the incident. he's an employee of keolis transit america... which provides bus drivers to the r-t-c. a company spokesman says they are cooperating with police. the circumstances leading to the bus leaving the road are still under investigation./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) >

bowie poured in around the world today... after the news that he lost his secret battle with liver cancer... 18 months after being diagnosed. tonight, las vegas is paying respects as well. the fremont street experience is honoring bowie with a video retrospective of his fascinating career on the viva vision canopy. bowie played in las vegas three times... including two shows at the hard rock a week apart in 2004. fans we spoke with were happy to see the local tribute... but still shocked at the news of bowie's passing: (( shauna walton- zwahlen / salt lake "yeah, we're huge fans of his, i have been for a long, long time, since since about 1960- something. yeah, it really hit us hard." )) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) the final tribute will take place just after midnight. though bowie was ill, he didn't stop making music. in fact, he just released his 28- th studio album, "blackstar." his music career began in 1969 with the release of "space oddity" which sold over 140-million albums.

((dave courvoisier)) > all-new video tonight of a fierce fire fight to bring the notorious mexican drug lord known as "el chapo" into custody after his months-long escape from prison: (( fierce gun battle, shouting )) ((dave courvoisier)) five of el chapo's men were killed in the gun battle. the fugitive himself escaped at first through a complex channel of tunnels... but authorities caught up to him later in a stolen car. el chapo's multi-billion dollar cartel has been a major supplier of illegal drugs to the u-s. in july, he broke out of his cell with help and got away through an underground passage./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > the armed protest in oregon continues tonight... and today demonstrators cut down a fence on the federal building's property. the group, led by ammon bundy, admitted they're going through the wildlife refuge's files and permits. potential federal charges are stacking up, but there's still no sign of law enforcement
11:11 pm
those opposing the protesters are showing up, but the group says they aren't leaving any time soon: (( (mark heckert, against protesters) "i'd never thought i'd have say that, but i'm here to oppose the armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge." (wanda moore, reporting) "do you have a plan?" (ryan bundy, protester) "not completely. when that plan comes up, we'll reveal it to you." )) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) bundy says the ranchers who own the land asked them to tear down the fence. in a community meeting this evening... local residents called for the bundy's to go home./// ((dave courvoisier)) > dave rice is out with the runnin' rebs... so what can we expect from unlv now that todd simon is calling the shots? chris maathuis is going to break it down for us. and the powerball is now 1.4 billion dollars... but it's not a surprise that no one has won. the little- known change to the game that reduced everybody's odds of winning big./// ((tedd florendo)) good luck to everyone. keeping our eye on those temperatures because we will drop to near freezing again. we'll show you your forecasted temps coming up.

donald trump now holds just a two point lead over senator ted cruz in the hawkeye state... but maintains a commanding lead in new hampshire. the big bite out of his lead in iowa, seems to have trump doubling down on attacks on cruz's eligibility to run for president. cruz was born in canada to an american mother, but trump again today questioned whether this would disqualify cruz's candidacy./// ((dave courvoisier)) > on the democratic side... senator bernie sanders is polling surprisingly well against hillary clinton -- he's only a few points behind clinton in iowa... and holds a narrow lead in new hampshire. in prospective general election polls, sanders holds a larger lead than clinton does over candidates such as trump and cruz. today, clinton took her aim off republicans and said sanders' proposals for new spending won't work without raising taxes. iowa's largest newspaper, the des moines register, said clinton's new attacks show she's nervous and panicky./// ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) > clark county voters could save more than 1 and a half million dollars and more than one-

((dave courvoisier)) > the powerball is at 1.4 billion dollars ahead of wednesday's scheduled drawing... but you may not have known... the historic jackpot is actually expected. in october, the states that run the powerball approved a rule change that makes it much harder to win the jackpot. under the new rules, you select five of 69 numbers -- it used to be out of 59 numbers. the powerball choices on the other hand, were actually reduced from 35 to 26... which creates more non-jackpot winners. overall, that decreases your

0-3 league mark, the runnin' rebels returned... just in time for unlv to force out coach dave rice. he was forced to resign sunday... today new head coach todd simon held his first practice as appointed head coach. some say dave rice was too nice and the team took on his persona. so now the question, what kind of personality will you see with simon in charge. todd simon/unlv interim head coach: "i would like to think i'm a mentally tough person... i'd like to think they're going to come in with a lot of confidence and handle situations and not get rattled on the court and not back down from anybody. ben carter/unlv center: "come out and support us this is a team that although we've dropped some games it's a team fans can still support, it's a team full of great guys, great coaching staff, and we're going to play

((chris maathuis)) the college championship tonight... it'll be interesting to see the ratings numbers on this game. not everybody cared about this one... alabama jumps out to a 21-14 lead. tigers score 10 straight points... taking the 24-21 lead... bama fans were sittin' on pins and needles. but fear not... alabama turned the tide.. they'd score 17 points in about 3 minutes. the big play was recovering the on-side pootch kick... that was huge... they'd score that drive. following a clemson field goale...on the kickoff...
