((michael stevens)) in his seventh and final state of the union address tonight -- president obama will talk to the american people about the

opportunities ahead: josh earnest/ wh press secretary) what's critical are the kinds of decisions we make now will have a significant impact on not just the next generation of americans but future generations of americans -nat/sot- (obama) i don't think i've ever been more optimistic about a year ahead than i am right now ((mchael stevens)) the president is expected to highlight executive actions he plans to take to tackle gun violence without congressional approval... but the white house says he'll also also discuss issues where both parties can work together: (sot josh earnest/ wh press secretary) we see that there is strong bipartisan support for criminal justice reform on capitol hill. ((kirsten joyce)) > the police chief in boulder city is stepping down... amid an animal control scandal. bill conger announced his resignation yesterday. conger dropped a criminal case against former animal control supervisor mary jo frazier when she retired from her job. an investigation revealed frazier illegally killed dozens of healthy animals. boulder city residents were upset over the actions by both frazier and conger... on his facebook page...conger's wife says he is retiring because -- quote--the recent events have created a significant distraction and hinder the ability to properly manage and lead a police organization./// ((brian loftus)) > the armed group who took over a wildlife refuge in oregon...is taking action.

the property yesterday...and are going through federal filing cabinets...they say... to expose what the government has done. they took over the building over a week ago... and are protesting the imprisonment of cattle ranchers. they're also upset over the government's ownership of land...and want it to be given back to the people. randy bundy says ranchers who own some of the land asked them to tear down the fence...dividing them from what they say is their property: (((randy bundy, protester) "this is ground that they've used for years in the past and now it's fenced off, prevented them from using it.")) ((brian loftus)) in a community meeting monday night, neighbors called for the bundys to go home. the harney county sheriff says there has been in increase in reports of harassment and vandalism since the protesters arrived./// ((brian loftus)) > the case of former clark county commissioner tom collins is set to be in court again today. his arraignment was delayed yesterday... he was arrested for d-u-i last month...after police say he crashed his car leaving the national finals rodeo. prosecutors say his blood alcohol was above the legal limit at point- one-one.

commission in august...citing family reasons./// ((kirsten joyce)) > a fight between a couple may have caused a crash in the southwest valley monday afternoon. this is cell phone video of the scene provided to 8 news now. it happened on warm springs between durango and cimarron. metro police say a man and woman inside the white sedan may have been arguing when the car crossed over toward oncoming traffic and hit this pickup truck. police tell us the woman driving the truck was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, same for the female passenger in the other car. and the man driving has life threatening injuries after he was trapped and had to be pulled out.... ((richard bornhoeft/driver: the car has passed me. it was swerving in and out of traffic, back door was opening and closing, it ran around around whole bunch of traffic. it ran some red lights and turned off into another street.)) valentine's day is around the corner! and a starbucks employee love. according to delish-dot-com... tony aguilar works in arizona and he came up with a few special valentine's drinks -- not on the menu. the valentine frappuccino...is strawberries and creme with raspberry syrup, vanilla bean, with blackberry syrup on top. there's the love bean frappuccino...a vanilla bean drink with raspberry syrup and raspberry flavored whipped cream... and java berry...which is java chip with raspberry whipped cream. a starbucks spokesperson told the website your barista might not know how to make them yet...but just give them the recipes.///

for a wealthy drug kingpin- he truly lived like a man on the run. monday, the media toured the now bullet hole riddled hideout where he was found. from the filthy kitchen... to the drab bedroom, guzman wasn't living lavishly. five of his men were killed in the shootout, but guzman managed to escape through intricate tunnels. a tip eventually led to his arrest in a stolen car. guzman is now being held at the same prison he escaped from in july. ((brian loftus)) > more progress is being made on changing the sex ed curriculum in clark county schools. the sex ed advisory committee met for the first time last night... they're job is to make recommendatio ns to the school board. in september...the school board voted on topics to make up a more comprehensive sex ed curriculum... including how students can get birth control and how toef dne sex abuse. it also appears sex education in clark county is stepping away from an absinence based model. sex ed advisory committee member amey esparza says it's about the curriculum: ((amey esparza/seac member it's no longer the opinion of if we should teach this it's more like

and russell road in henderson yesterday. police say 22- year-old daron clanton is facing a murder charge... police responded to a 9-1-1 call at his home...and found a 54- year-old man dead. neighbors say the family who live in the house usually keep to themselves. the deadly shooting marks the first homicide of 20-16 in henderson's jurisdiction./// ((kirsten joyce)) > former n-b-a player lamar odom won't be charged...after he tested positive for cocaine while here in nevada. odom was found unconscious in a brothel in nye county back in october. nye county prosecutors say evidence doesn't prove that odom used the drugs while in the county. the odom family says he is now in a private facility...after leaving an l-a hospital last week./// ((brian loftus)) > a meeting will be held today... so performers on fremont street can tell city officials how they feel about the new rules. the new city ordinance started back in november... it requires performers to stay in designated zones... and chooses who gets spots with a lottery. performers will be giving leaders their feedback this afternoon.///

henderson received a big honor yesterday... they're the largest distribution center in the world to receive the leed latinum certification for improving sustainability. the company retro-fitted the building to be better for the environment. it uses less energy and less water...and sends less waste to the landfill.
