((michael stevens)) > brian, kirsten... political experts we spoke to say... of course, the presidents final address will highlight a number of issues facing the country. but it's also important because it's his last address... and important for his legacy.
seventh and final state of the in his seventh and final state of the union address tonight -- american people about the nation's challenges and opportunities ahead: josh earnest/ wh press secretary) what's critical are the kinds of decisions we make now will have a significant impact on not just the next generation of americans but future generations of americans (president obama) i don't think i've ever been more optimistic about a year ahead than i am right now ((michael stevens)) the president is expected to highlight executive actions he plans to take to tackle gun violence without congressional approval... but the white house says he'll also also discuss issues where both parties can work together: (josh earnest/ wh press secretary) we see that there is strong bipartisan support for criminal justice reform on capitol hill. ((michael stevens)) this year president obama has invited 23 guests to the house chamber to hear his speech, including a hero. 23-year-old spencer stone and his two friends helped take down a heavily armed gunman on a paris-bound train last year.
last week during his commute to work: (spencer stone/ american hero) they called me right as i pulled into my parking spot and they told me i would be sitting in the first lady's box and obviously i had a great day after that. ((michael stevens)) the white house is also using social media to spread the president's message by providing a behind-the- scenes look at tonight's event on snapchat. ((michael stevens)) a chair in first lady michelle obama's box will be left empty to honor victims of gun violence. south carolina governor nikki haley will offer this year's republican response. ((brian loftus)) > a fight between a couple may have caused a crash in the southwest valley. this is cell phone video of the scene provided to 8 news now. it happened monday afternoon on warm springs between durango and cimarron. metro police say a man and woman inside the white sedan may have been arguing when the car crossed over toward oncoming traffic and hit this pickup truck. police tell us the woman driving the truck was taken to the
same for the female passenger in the white car....and the man driving it has life threatening injuries after he was trapped and had to be pulled out.... ((richard bornhoeft/driver: the car has passed me. it was swerving in and out of traffic, back door was opening and closing, it ran around around whole bunch of traffic. it ran some red lights and turned off into another street.)) police are looking at whether the driver was distracted and swerved....or if he swerved intentionally. if you have any information, call crimestoppers./// ((kirsten joyce)) > the animal control scandal surrounding boulder city apparently cost the police chief his job. bill conger tendered his resignation last night. he dropped a crimina case against former animal control supervisor mary jo frazier when she retired from her job. an investigation revealed frazier illegally killed 91 healthy animals instead of trying to find them homes. the revelation of the killings caused public outrage and now the clark county district attorney is reviewing frazier's case./// ((brian loftus)) > former clark county "cowboy" commissioner, as

(dr. terri mcfadden/children' s healthcare of atlanta) "so routines are really important so starting with bathing and having that bath time that allow them to settle down. and then, brushing their teeth and then they start to think ok bath then brushing. and then, bedtime and story time, it's really important to have a nice calming activity like reading a book together and
lullaby or playing soft music can help. if it's too dark, add a night light or leave the door cracked. and for children older than 12- months, a special blanket or toy can help. district have teamed up to update and revise the regional bicycle and pedestrian plan. the rtc says the plan could influence future road design and help prioritize projects. all you need to do is fill out a survey. on the rtc's website, therr's a survey and a mapping tool. both have english and spanish options. the survey isn't very long. you will be asked questions about your travel habits around town. for example, question 6 is, "what are the top three obstacles or concerns that may prevent you from walking or biking more?" moving onto the mapping tool now. with this map, you can draw routes and place points to share your thoughts. the deadline for the survey is january 31, so make sure you go check it out. we will have a linin to everything on our website

at their house near russell and whitney ranch. officers say three people were home at the time of the shooting. clanton now faces one charge for open murder. this is henderson's first homicide investigation of the year./// ((brian loftus)) > former nba star lamar odom will not face charges... after being found unconscious inside a brothel near pahrump... despite having cocaine in his system. nye county prosecutors say the evidence didn't prove that odom used the drug during his three days in the county... so he could not be charged there. odom was found unconscious in october.. and was rushed to a las vegas hospital.. before continuing his treatment in l- a. his family says he was transferred to a private facility last week./// ((kirsten joyce)) > the bundy battle in oregon is heating up.. and locals there say they want the armed protesters gone. the group cut down a fence on the wildlife refuge property yesterday. the protesters led by the family of a nevada rancher... say they are looking over government documents and plan to release what they contain. they took over the building over a week ago and are protesting
ranchers. they're also upset over the government's ownership of land...and want it to be given back to the people./// ((brian loftus)) > and we're going to commerce, california right now.. just outside of l-a. investigators say a driver swerved to miss a truck that cut the driver off.. and struck the fire hydrant and an electric pole. and speaking of dough.... the first thing on the list is girl scout cookies. they're pretty much 5 bucks nationwide now as opposed to $4. the up side to that is the girl scouts are taking home 95 cents from every box sold. keeping with the food theme ... the food you buy in general is going to cost you more. last year we saw prices for eggs and milk skyrocket and you can expect that to continue. but not just for breakfast items -- for everything. according to the u.s. department of agriculture, food prices across the board could jump anywhere from 2 to 3 percent. gas is also expected to go up this year... by about 50 cents come summertime... according to many analysts. but gas is almost half as expensive as it was a year ago, according to the u.s. energy information administration. ... so some argue .. gas shouldn't be on this list.
