a utah police officer is killed in the line of duty. what led up to the deadly shooting... which put another officer in the hospital. /// now, nevada's first choice for news, this is 8 newsnow, weekend edition sharie johnson > thank you for joining us i'm sharie johnson. another person is dead tonight after getting struck by a car on a busy valley road. police are alarmed at the rate of deaths on roadways we've seen in just the first two weeks of the new year. 8 news nows mauricio marin live on sahara near valley view with details about this latest deadly crash. ((mauricio marin)) police have just wrapped up their investigation on scene. they tell us a woman darted in front of cars here on sahara. she wasn't in a crosswalk and was hit by a car. detectives say when the woman was hit she flew and landed in the middle of the road. she was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. police tell us she was about
crosswalk. detectives spent the evening collecting evidence on scene after first getting the just call after six this evening. metro police say we've seen an alarming number of deaths on valley roads so early in the year. compared to only one fatality this time last year. ((sgt. richard strader/metro police: "this is our 7th traffic related fatality for the year and again now we're seeing pedestrians getting truck again. it's a nice night out so people are obviously going to be outside walking but pedestrians need to be crossing where the crosswalks are." )) ((mauricio marin)) police say the woman didn't have any identification on her. but say she is an adult female. the coroner will release her name once they are able to i-d her and notify family. ((mauricio marin)) police tell us the driver of the vehicle stayed and coopertated. they don't believe alcohol or speed played a factor in this deadly crash. remind everyone on the road to
reporting live...mauricio marin. 8 news now./// ((sharie johnson)) > a valley walmart is now shut down... which has created a food desert for one community. the location on craig and las vegas boulevard closed its doors this evening at 7:00. this is just one of 154 stores walmart is closing in the u-s. the news came as a shock to many customers who rely on the discount superstore. one customer says he'll likely have to move because he doesn't have a car... and there's no where else to shop. (( scott welshhons/walmar t customer, "we're on limited finances and everything else, i mean, it's hard to us to get around and do anything that was the reason why we moved here. it's because we had everything here in this neighborhood." )) ((sharie johnson)) the shuttered walmart is located in what the u-s-d-a calls a "food desert." that's an urban neighborhood "without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food."
