in last night's first democratic debate of the year. experts weigh in on which top candidate struggled the most on stage. ((kirsten joyce)) and i'm kirsten joyce. police are currently looking for a suspect... connected to a shooting that happened last night. ((brian loftus)) this happened on las vegas boulevard... in between richmar and serene. police say several men got into a fight... when one of them shot the other in the upper torso. during the argment... one of the men made a comment saying he would --quote-- "blow up the place"... and "pull the pin". police got the scene and later located a suspicious metal object... which forced them to evacuate

police say it turned out to be nothing... the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatning injuries. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > a pedestrian was struck and killed last night... after police say she darted in front of cars. it happened on sahara near valley view. police say the woman was not in a crosswalk. when she was hit, she flew and landed in the middle of the road. she was taken to the hospital where she was later died... police say she was about 100- crosswalk. detectives spent the night collecting evidence on the scene. police are alarmed at the number of deaths we've seen in the first few weeks of the new year... compared to only one death we had this same time last year: ((sgt. richard strader/metro police: "this is our 7th traffic related fatality for the year and again now we're seeing pedestrians getting truck again. it's a nice night out so people are obviously going to be outside walking but pedestrians need to be crossing where the crosswalks are." )) ((kirsten joyce)) police tell us the driver of the vehicle stayed and coopertated on scene. they don't believe alcohol or speed played a factor. ///

country is celebrating and honoring martin luther king's legacy. ((brian loftus)) and here in las vegas, we're getting ready for the 34-th annual m-l-k day parade... which kicks off later this morning. the parade will start at 10-am... and will run along fourth street from gass to stewart. there are close to 100 floats honoring king's life and legacy. our own sharie johnson and tedd florendo will emcee the parade... as it heads throughout town. now if you're going to be in the area... be aware of road closures. /// ((brian loftus)) ((kirsten joyce))

presidential candidates took the stage... for their first debate of the new year. both hillary clinton and bernie sanders spoke highly of the issue of gun control. weija jang has the latest from the campaign trial. bill and hillary clinton greeted supporters and posed for pictures...followi ng the final debate before the iowa caucuses. earlier, mrs. clinton and vermont senator bernie sanders clashed on a number of issues..starting with gun control. hillary clinton/democrati c

he voted for immunity for gun makers and sellers, which the nra said was the most important piece of gun legislation in 20 years. clinton slammed sanders for voting with the nra and for reversing his position on immunity for gun manufacturers. but sanders pointed to his lifetime rating of d minus with the powerful gun lobby. sen. bernie sanders/democrati c presidential candidate i think secretary clinton knows what she says is very disingenuous. (weijia jiang, cbs news, charleston, sc) fiscal policy and healthcare reform also dominated the exchanges discussion here in charleston. sanders: in the wealthiest country in the history of the world we should have healthcare for every man woman and child as a right. clinton: there are things we can do to improve it but to tear it up and start over again, pushing our country back into that kind of debate i think is the wrong direction. former maryland governor struggled was also on the stage, but struggled to be heard. i don't think there has been a single debate where people left saying they heard too much from martin o'malley. a new poll gives clinton a big lead nationwide over both

was unimpressed...and quickly mentioned he is winning in the new hampshire polls and is tied in iowa.where voters are set to caucus in just 2 weeks. weijia jiang, cbs news, charleston ((brian loftus)) bernie sanders was the top candidate to be discussed on twitter and facebook... according to reps from both social media companies. south carolina will hold its first-in-the- south democratic primary on february 27th. /// ((brian loftus)) > on the other side of the race... republican presidential candidate ted cruz is facing a federal lawsuit... if he's eligible to run for president. it's based on a theory that he may not be a natural born citizen. cruz was born in canada... but his mother was an american citizen. legal theorists say cruz is generally accepted to be a natural born citizen... but no court has definitely ruled on the question. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > the c-d-c has issed new travel guidelines for women heading to places...

present. it's called the "zika virus"... and it comes from mosquitoes. the virus was found in fetal and newborn tissues of babies with a neurological disorder in brazil. the disorder causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads... which leads to developmental issues and sometimes death. currently, there is no vaccine or medicine for the virus. so far, there has been one confirmed person who has it... after recently traveling to latin america. /// ((kirsten joyce)) researchers... ads for flavored e- cigarettes are more likely to attract children... than ads for non-flavored. this after they tested nearly 600 children. there are currently no regulations that keep advertisers from pitching candy flavored e-cigarettes here in the u-s. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > buying your music on apple's itunes store may cost you... but so will itunes radio. (jamir kirshner, met adele while she was tipsy): "we both went to ensworth high school" that's his friend jamir kirshner - a freshman at the university of denver. natsot: "ya absolutely crazy." and this is the two of them after meeting adele at a london restaurant a few days before christmas. (jamir kirshner, met adele while she was tipsy): "she was coming by my table and my mom was like 'hey, adele!'" they figured their chance to say "hello" to adele would end there. but adele it turned out was rolling in the deep end of a few glasses of wine. (jamir kirshner, met adele while she was tipsy): "well my mom said we're big fans. we tried to get tickets to your show but it sold out in 10 minutes or something crazy and she said oh i hadn't hear that yet" (adele): "the next day in the park i'm with my kid like, and i find this email address in my pocket of another family from nashville who told me the show

(jamir kirshner, met adele while she was tipsy): "it was word for word the same thing i'd been telling people" much to their surprise adele recalled the entire encounter during carpool entire encounter during carpool karaoke on the late late show this week. reporter/question: "did you ever think you'd get to hear her telling it? oh absolutely not." they can't count how many times they've told their friend this story. turns out adele, is telling her friends as well. natsot: "we could have had it all. rolling in the deep." > ./// ((brian loftus)) > a domino- style chain reaction along a michigan highway... left one person dead... and three other people in critical condition. a witness says cars were banged up... some crushed between jack- knifed semi- trailers... all because of the white out conditions: (( kelly love/driver: "out of nowhere i was hit by a semi truck which caused me to kind of spin out land in a ditch. my husband i guess he caught the semi trucks tail end.

"i'm very thankful we walked out of this accident without a scratch. literally if anything went deadly both of us could be dead." )) ((brian loftus)) police say as many as 50 vehicles and a dozen semi- trucks were involved in the pile-up. they also say heavy snow, high speed... and reduced visibility were to blame for the wrecks. police expect fatalities to go up. /// ((kirsten joyce)) > a woman in australia amazingly is doing okay... after barely escaping when a car crashed into a gas station there. this surveillance video shows the woman walking inside the store... when all of a sudden the car comes crashing in. the store clerk thought the woman was hit... and immediately went to check on her. other workers helped two people out of that car... and were taken to the hospital. the collision also triggered a gas leak. police are investigating what caused the accident... and if alcohol was a factor. ///

one of its unmanned rockets... this time in the pacific ocean. the rocket carried a satellite into space... but things went downhill when it tried to land on a platform... in the pacific. space-x tweeted the rocket hit the platform too hard... and broke a standing leg. this was space-x's fourth failed rocket launch. the company is trying to reuse its rockets... so it can cut the costs of its space flights. ///

> if you're still using windows eight... it's time to switch over the newer version. microsoft has ended support for that operating system... which means that millions of users will no longer get updates to block viruses and hackers. the company says all users should upgrade to windows 8- point-one... or windows 10./// ((brian loftus)) > if you use apple's itunes radio to listen to your favorite music hits... be prepared to start paying for it. apple will no longer offer the service for free as of january 28th. "beats 1" will now be the only free radio service provided by apple. all other stations will require a paid apple music subscription... of 10-dollars a month. the service features guest hosts, exclusive interviews, and music selected by apple's dj's. /// ((brian loftus)) > speaking of music... david bowie's final album "blackstar" is topping the charts. the album is now number one on the "billboard 200"... knocking out adele from the top spot. this is bowie's first number one album in the u-s... and his biggest sales week for an album since 1991.
