because we care for you... and your eyes. this is genuine eye care, in your neighborhood. this is pearle vision. ((sherry swensk)) > forecasters around the country have been talking about the effects of this year's super charged el nino and what it will have on our winter weather. we've already had a preview of heavy rain and flooding just next door in california. i had the chance to chat with the weather channel's jim cantore... about how you can be prepared
5:11 am
sherry: so we know you love your severe weather, you've been out in the middle of hurricanes, you're off the charts excited about thunder snow, so what are you antiipating about this el nino season. what will it bring us? jim: it's really interesting that you ask me this question on this day because right now the american meteorological society conference is going on in new orleans and they're discussing this. what's come up is 'if this is the strongest el nino on record, and it's being compared to 97, 98 ... why aren't we having this constant barrage or this hose on southern california?' and the answer to that may lie in the position of the warmest water. in other words, we know el nino is the warming waters off of south america, right? out into the central pacific, it jacks up the jet stream. but back in 97/98 that position was a lot closer to south america. now it looks like it's positioned a little further west.
5:12 am
call a little more ridging or drier weather, or shift in the pattern up into the northwest vs just hammering southern california. so the bottom line is, as we continue to learn about all these things like el nino and arctic isolation, we don't know everything about them #1. we don't know how they all play together. we like to think that everybody plays nice together, right? but sometimes they don't. either way, i would still expect, at times, a stormy pattern to develop in this area, especially as we go forward into the next couple of months. it's just too strong a signal not to eventually get a least a few storms.. and we've already seen that in southern california sherry: yea, so maybe a chance of rain for the desert, of course we're anticipating more rain for southern california where the wildfires have been the worst of course, last year worst year on record. um, so maybe a little more rain for the desert, maybe we could see more rain too. how should people be prepared for what could be damaging weather? jim: the good news is the sierra snowpack for the
5:13 am
the top of the sierra down to the southern sierra.. above average in terms of snowfall, what it should be at this time of the year. so we've actually got a snowpack to go 2 thumbs up with this year. for the southwest in general, including las vegas, i would not be surprised, especially given the fact that you guys have such a warm pool of water out there to get an enhanced rainfall or flood risk. and as you know, even though you're in a desert, you guys can flood. you guys have seen it, especially during the monsoon season in the summer. you can flood very quickly. so something you absolutely need to be aware of, even i think this winter, the enhanced risk of this particular strong el nino. sherry: thanks so much, jim cantore. we really appreciate you being with us. it's always great to talk to you and i guess we'll see you out in the middle of the next catestrophic weather event. always look forward to your passion and excitement. jim: there's always a chance, sherry. just make sure that your homeowners know their flood risk.
5:14 am
because your homeowners insurance policy does not cover flooding. it's a separate policy. sherry: absolutely. don't want them to be caught off guard. thanks jim! jim: you bet. ((sherry swensk)) and here's something else to keep in mind.. if you add a flood policy.. it doesn't go into effect right away. it typically takes about 30 days to kick in./// adlib weather chat sherry swensk <
