((dave courvoisier)) the latest fire happened over the weekend... but it's been a problem firefighters have been dealing with all winter long. don't have electricity. homeless folks are resorting to other unsafe measures to keep warm. karen castro looks into the problem... ((karen castro)) squatters trying to keep warm are believed to have caused a string of fires at this apartment complex on tam drive near the i-15 and sahara. ((karen castro)) property manager, danny sanchez, says he's tried everything to keep squatters out... he's even called police. but nothing seems to work. ((danny sanchez - resident manager, tam apartments: usually that doesn't deter them from coming back a lot them have already put up trespass warning on them.)) ((karen castro)) a law enacted in october deals with squatting issues in the valley... making it a crime, instead of a civil matter. this allows officers to respond to a scene and take action. ((michael rodriguez - metro pd: when we receive squatter calls that are actively going on, that is that a person is actively in a residence that they don't belong in, generally speaking we send a patrol officer out to do a preliminary investigation.)) ((karen castro)) metro says it's difficult for the
asking a squatter to leave. ((michael rodriguez - metro pd: many times, we cannot contact a victim and that's the issue for us because in any crime, even in a trespassing or occupying a real property like the squatting law, we have to be able to contact the victim.)) ((karen castro)) as for sanchez, he feels defeated. ((danny sanchez - resident manager, tam apartments: when they break in, we just try to fix the, you know, fix the damage that they break and that's about all we can do i think at this point.)) ((dave courvoisier)) here's a look at where those new hospitals will be built... one in north las vegas near m-l-k and craig road.. another will be near sahara and decatur. the third will serve the far western part of the valley... near west flamingo and the 215. the fourth will focus on the southwest valley... near blue diamond and decatur.
