((brian loftus)) here's a live look at the scene. it happened just after 3 this morning... police haven't released any details yet on what happened or if anyone was hurt. let's turn things over to demetria...and see how the accident is impacting roads this morinng./// < demetria obilor >we're on the scene of a very serious accident that happened on the west side. you're look at the 7-11 on the corner of spring mountain and rainbow, where it appears 2 vehicles are flipped over. metro has shut down rainbow and spring mountain for a quarter mile in both directions.

brian loftus this morning the leaders of the armed group occupying a federal wildlife refuge in oregon are under arrest. ((kirsten joyce)) the f-b-i and oregon state police stopped members of the group on a highway near burns oregon, and shots were fired... 1 person was killed. 8 news now reporter michael stevens joins us in studio this morning... with more information on what led up to the shooting... and the other arrests made. good morning michael? ((michael stevens)) > authorities say the person who died in law officers' confrontation with ammon bundy and his followers is an adult man. however, the harney county sheriff's office gave no other information on the person who died. :40-:48 ammon bundy/militia leader/jan. 4, 2016 1:06-1:10 (quick!!) gov. kate brown/d-oregon five of the oregon militants were arrested during a traffic stop down this road tuesday afternoon. the fbi says during the stop- a militia member was shot and killed. among the arrested- militia leaders ammon and ryan bundy. their arrests, mark the end of a 3-week occupation of a national wildlife refuge in the town of

in recent days, ammon bundy had been trying to negotiate with the fbi. bundy's group seized the federal wildlife refuge earlier this month as part of a long- running dispute over public lands. early on bundy said he and his followers were in it for the long run. (ammon bundy/militia leader) "when government steps outside its bounds that the people have given it, that it is the duty of the people to put that government back in its place." before the arrests, tensions had been boiling over among locals fed up with the occupation especially since the group took arms. the state's governor had also been calling for the fbi to intervene. (gov. kate brown/d-oregon) "the spectacle of lawlessness must end" three other militia members were arrested at two other locations. ((michael stevens)) so far, the fbi hasn't identified the militia member who was killed. and coming up in our next half hour...

bundy... who says he spoke with his son shortly after last nights arrest. ((brian loftus)) michael... any word on what kind of charges those arrested may face? ((michael stevens)) the arrested will all face at least one felony charge. the militia standoff began as a protest against the federal government sending two local ranches charged with arson on public lands back to prison. ((brian loftus)) > a suspect is behind bars this morning... after police say he pointed a gun at an officer, forcing police to open fire. ((kirsten joyce)) they say it started when they chased down a person driving a stolen vehicle. the suspect stopped the car, got out and took off a metro chopper saw the suspect carrying a gun near bonanza and pecos and told crews on the ground. they say the suspect pointed a gun at an officer...who then shot and hit him the suspect was taken to the hospital and then taken to jail. it's the 2nd police shooting this year../// ((brian loftus)) > and the suspect involved in the first police shooting of the year is set to be in court today.

yesterday... metro detailed the events leading up to friday's shooting. police say black quit his job at harrah's on that night... then... police say they received several calls about black...walking into (( operator: "911 emergency." caller: "the intersection of las vegas boulevard and flamingo, there is a black male adult the street." operator: "911 emergency." caller: "there's a guy with a gun, a black male, probably mid-20s, and he's like literally right in the middle of the road." )) they say black then pointed his gun at other people in front of the bellagio fountains. officer george smith told him to drop his weapon. police say black turned toward officer smith and pointed his gun directly at him. officer smith opened fire but missed black...and grazed a child with a bullet. police later found out...black's gun wasn't loaded./// ((brian loftus)) > crews were out all night... working to find out how many homeless people live in the valley. ((kirsten joyce)) they started at 11:30 last night and just wrapped up.

kindness recipient explains... girls scouts is so much more. it lays a solid foundation for young women to figure out their passion, serve their community... and be a part of something bigger than themselves. vanette christensen/acts of kindness recipient : "all of the different levels are represented here." ((kirsten joyce)) vanette christensen takes great pride in her involvement with the girl scouts of southern nevada. .. vanette christensen/acts of kindness recipient " i'm a girlscout, it's not what i do. it's who i am. " ((kirsten joyce)) as the historian and archivist... her volunteer job is to preserve the artifacts that have been donated, or gifted... and use them to educate young girls about the history, and mission. vanette christensen/acts of kindness recipient " this one here is from 1919.". ((kirsten joyce)) this is the very first girl scout uniform.. girls could buy them, or sew them.. vanette christensen/acts of kindness recipient " the sleeves, hand stitched on" ((kirsten joyce)) and the official buttons could be rented from the organizatoin... for 15 cents. brian loftus > our other top story this morning... one person is dead... and several others are behind bars... after federal officials and members of the militia holding fort holding fort at the malheur national wildlife refuge crossed paths. kirsten joyce 8 news now reporter michael stevens has the

reaction .... from local rancher cliven bundy. ((michael stevens)) brian, kirsten... the f-b-i and oregon state police issued a joint statement last night... saying they initiated an operation to bring the militia members into custody. multiple sources say the militia members were driving and not on the property when officers attempted to pull them over to execute an arrest. during the arrest attempt -- shots were fired. we've learned that lavoy finicum was the man who was killed -- he's been a vocal membe of the militia and vowed to oppose the federal government there in oregon. meantime... ryan bundy was shot in the arm -- he is expected to be fine. in total, eight individuals with ties to the militia were arrested -- one of them in arizona. we spoke with cliven bundy on the phone last night. he says ammon called his family from the back of the police car and this is what he had to say about the deadly confrontation: ((cliven bundy // cattle

hands in the air told him he wasn't armed and they went ahead and shot him i don't know how many times but they shot him as far as i know he's dead.")) bundy says his sons were on a mission to help and educate other ranchers and have no intention of creating violence. he says the man who died was a rancher in arizona who had a wife and children. the fbi says all of the defendants, including the bundy brothers, face federal felony charges of conspiracy to impede officers of the u-s from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation, or threats. they are working with the harney oregon... oregon state police... and the united states attorney's office for the investigation. ((kirsten joyce)) michael... do we know if protesters are planning any sort of as of right now... cliven bundy says he doesn't know... he also says he's not sure when he'll talk to or see his 2 sons who are now behind bars facing

((kirsten joyce)) > we're learning new details about the las vegas teacher... accused of sexual misconduct with a student. jillian lafave was arrested earlier this month... she is a special education teacher at valley high school. an arrest report says she exchanged thousands of text messages with her special ed student... many of them sexual. police also say lafave admitted to kissing and having sexual contact with the student. we spoke with an 11th grade student of lafave's. he says the teacher was nice to her students...but he noticed something going on between the victim and their teacher: ((manuel/valley high school student: "when we were in class she used to like let him borrow everything she has at her desk/ ((kirsten joyce)) c-c-s-d sent us a statement regarding the incident, saying all employees undergo fbi background checks amd a local criminal history inquiry... and employees also receive training regarding child abuse and inappropriate relationships with students. lafave is out on bail and remains on paid leave while the case is being investigated./// kirsten joyce > now let's get a
