group occupying a federal wildlife refuge in oregon are under arrest. ((kirsten joyce)) the f-b-i and oregon state police stopped members of the group on a highway near burns oregon, and shots were fired. don champion has the latest on the standoff.) five of the oregon militants were arrested during a traffic stop down this road tuesday afternoon. the fbi says during the stop- a militia member was shot and killed. among the arrested- militia leaders ammon and ryan bundy.

end of a 3-week occupation of a national wildlife refuge in the town of burns, oregon. it's unclear if any other militia members are still at the refuge. "so no chris, huh?" in recent days, ammon bundy had been trying to negotiate with the fbi. bundy's group seized the federal wildlife refuge earlier this month as part of a long- running dispute over public lands. early on bundy said he and his followers were in it for the long run. ammon bundy/militia leader: "when government steps outside its bounds that the people have given it, that it is the duty of the people to put that government back in its place" before the arrests, tensions had been boiling over among locals fed up with the occupation especially since the group took arms. the state's governor had also been calling for the fbi to intervene. (gov. kate brown/d-oregon ) "the spectacle of lawlessness must end" three other militia members were arrested at two other

possession of a stolen firearm. metro police held a press conference yesterday.. revealing new details about friday's incident. investigators say black was pointing a gun a people on the strip, as well as officers. we've learned the pistol was not loaded.. but there were at least two times where police say he pointed it at tourists and pulled the trigger. metro police also revealed officer george smith was about 10- yards away from black.. when he fired at black twice and missed: ((kevin mcmahill/metro undersheriff: "we're accountable for every round that we fire, from an officer's weapon, and frankly, in this event, we were lucky that the situation did not end up in a very much worse scenario." )) ((brian loftus)) officer smith is a 10- year veteran of the force. he's on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation. we're told this is the first time officer smith has been involved in a shooting. police also tell us black was escorted off harrah's property after he quit his job that evening./// ((kirsten joyce)) > and metro police are also investigating a car chase that ended with an officer opening fire in the northeast part of the valley. police say this began yesterday after they received a call about

investigators say an officer spotted it speeding at washington and marion....tried to stop it....the driver then crashed at bonanza and pecos...and ran away -- a gun in hand -- toward a neighborhood. metro says an officer in an unmarked car then spotted the at him.... and the officer opened fire. police say the suspect was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital. he has been booked on felony charges. metro says officers were injured./// ((brian loftus)) > all night long.. volunteers have been out on the streets counting the homeless. this census helps southern nevada receive millions of dollars in grant money for issue.. last year, people counted more than 75- hundred on the streets of las vegas and estimated another 34- thousand are homeless throughout the year. this census allowed local programs that help the homeless in grant money. volunteers will also be out counting homeless youth from 7:30am until 2:30 pm today./// ((brian loftus)) > the us government wants to hear what you have to say. about the future of transportation in the valley. learning new details about the las vegas teacher... accused of sexual misconduct with a student. jillian lafave was arrested earlier this month... she is a special education teacher at valley high school. an arrest report says she exchanged thousands of text messages with her special ed student... many of them sexual. police also say lafave admitted to kissing and having sexual contact with the student. we spoke with an 11th grade student of lafave's. he says the teacher was nice to her students...but he noticed something going on between the victim and their teacher: ((manuel/valley high school student: "when we were in class she used to like let him borrow everything she has at her desk ((kirsten joyce)) c-c-s-d sent us a statement regarding the incident, saying all employees undergo fbi background checks amd a local criminal history inquiry... and employees also receive training regarding child abuse with students.
