firefighters using saws to get through the roof of a second floor condo. "wife and i woke up to hear alarms and i was in the bathroom and smoke started coming through the wall." randall grabbed his wife and dog ...and thought ... "i'm gonna lose everything...and i did."' while the smell of smoke and screams woke many this morning, it was janice's furry friend that alerted her. "she ran to the condos and was barkin b yelling for people to get out." "if it hadn't been for her, i probably wouldn't have called 911 as promptly as i did." one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. a firefighter was also transported to u-m-c with minor injuries -- after a tile fell off the roof and hit him on the head. "you kind of get that shaky jitters and intenseness, what not in situations like that." some watched as flames shot through the roof. "trying to get downstairs is hard for me

and a house fire before that at 3:30 this morning turned deadly. those flames broke out near sahara and lamb. this cell phone video shows the moments after fire crews first showed up. a man was found dead inside the front room of the empty house. homicide detectives... and arson investigators were on the scene working to determine if they man inside was a squatter.. and if he started the fire./// ((dave courvoisier)) 20-thousand people were rescued from floodwaters in southern louisiana over the last fewa at least five lives so far. it started when 20 inches of rain fell in just 24 hours. today the sun is shining in baton rogue.. but it's just spotlighting the damage. entire communities were submerged. people had to be rescued from cars.. and houses.. including a woman and her dog. david phung says he realized he was going to have to jump in to save them: ((david phung, rescued woman & her dog: that car was completely submerged. i just took a deep breath, held it and just kept feeling around and eventually felt something furry and yanked the dog
