the air on the myths, lies and misconceptions about pit bulls. shakala? ((shakala alvaranga)) >> paul and christianne, yesterday's tragedy has stirred an online debate : one side that says pit bulls are dangerous, vicious animals. but others, who say the finger should be pointed at the pet's owner. we talked to a rescue organization tonight ... to get answers. 9 year old derion stevenson was attacked and killed by a dog wednesday afternoon. the tragedy putting negative reputation ... pit bulls. "i've heard horrendous stories as you can imagine in rescue as to what people have done to animals ... far more stories about humans hurting animals than animals every hurting humans." there's no question what happened this week was awful. "even if he saw you 20 times in the same day, he would tell you he loved you. 20 times a day he didn't get tired of it." but benson wants people to keep something in mind. "yes, it should raise concern about that particular dog, not all that breeds dogs.

bulls. pit bulls only make up 6-percent of the dog population. by the way, the dog that killed that child has since been euthanized. it's still unclear if the owner will face criminal charges. ((christianne klein)) >> shakala, do we know if the dog was riled or simply thought it was protecting the home at the time of the attack? ((shakala alvaranga)) >> that's the next step for investigators... we do know that derion approached his friend's home to get some candy when "left eye", the dog, attacked. we expect more information to exactly how this happened./// ((christianne klein)) dog attacks aren't uncommon...look ing at a longer time frame watchdog group dogs bite dot org shows that 360 americans were killed in dog attacks between 2005 and 2015... 64-percent, or 232 total, of those were from pit bulls. the second leading breed in that category was rottweilers at 11-percent or 41 deaths. german shepherds were
that time frame. dogs bite dot org supports a pit bull breed ban... and mandatory spay and neuter programs./// ((paul joncich)) interstate 15 through cajon pass is back open in both directions tonight... but the bluecut fire in southern california remains a major threat. it has grown to 36-thousand acres in size... and remains just 22-percent contained. the fire started tuesday morning. approximately 34-thousand structures remain threatened by the fire... but some evacuation orders have been lifted firefighters are working to get the blaze under control./// ((paul joncich)) and while firefighters and law enforcement are teaming up to help others through this crisis... we're seeing some real ugliness. san bernardino county sheriff's deputies say they've arrested these three people... for attempting to steal property from the fire evacuation areas. the suspects, all in their twenties, were reportedly caught leaving a residence with property that doesn't belong to them. they will be charged with looting and grand theft auto./// ((christianne klein))

he's charged with robbery and burglary with a deadly weapon. he could face additional charges./// ((christianne klein)) metro has announced arrests in two separate murder cases... two men were taken into custody in dallas, texas... in connection to a triple shooting at a gas station near bermuda and cactus on june 26-th. one of the victims in that case died. 18 year-old gerald fuller and 29 year-old adrian johnson were detained by the dallas f-b-i violent crime task force and await extradition to las vegas./// ((christie james rachal was arrested in california on unrelated charges... when it was discovered he had an outstanding warrant in a murder on september 11-th of last year here in las vegas. rachal is suspected in the shooting at a smoke shop near boulder highway and tropicana that left two men dead. he's been returned to southern nevada and is in the clark county detention center tonight. the motive for that shooting has not been released./// ((paul joncich)) new information tonight

a dramatic helicopter rescue on the pacific crest trail in fresno county, california. a 66-year-old woman was hiking the trail when she became ill with what she believed to be symptoms of a possible stroke. tara steele was wearing an emergency beacon which helped the fresno county sheriff's office and california highway patrol locate her. it was a difficult task for steele's rescuers... the helicopter pilot had to navigate tall trees and communicate with dispatchers to find a safe place for the rescue: flight officer being able to give me verbal commands so i could maneuver the aircraft because i can't see the site, be able to maneuver the aircraft to a precise spot where he wants it so he can lower the cable into that small opening." )) ((paul joncich)) a rescuer was wearing a helmet camera as he rappelled out of the chopper and secured the woman to a specialized gurney so she could be lifted into the helicopter safely. fellow hikers assisted with the
