an inmate opens fire in a california jail...wounding two correctional officers who are now fighting for their lives. what authorities say led to the shooting. plus plenty of visitors are still flocking into the valley for labor day weekend. how much money they're expected to bring to the valley. and katie boer gives us a look at the forecast before you head out the doors. 8 news now, the valley's news leader starts right now./// "now, live...this is 8 news now weekend edition." ((nia wong) thanks for waking up this sunday morning, i'm nia wong. labor day weekend has officially kicked off. and travellers from across the world are in the valley. las vegas has been ranked the number one destination on several different travel sites. local tourism leaders say they're expecting 307- thousand people to spend the holiday here in town ... that's nearly 1- percent more than last year. they're expected to bring in 206- and a half million dollars ..

our sunday. ((nia wong)) two correctional officers are fighting for their lives after a man opened fire in the lobby of a central california county jail. we're told the officers were shot in the head and neck. police say the man tried cutting the visitors' line at the fresno officers during a struggle. the male officer remains in critical condition--- while the female officer is in stable condition. the suspect has since been taken into custody and now faces several felony charges./// ((nia wong)) and we now know the identity of the 19 year-old believed to be involved in an accidental shooting. that happened thursday night near lake mead and m-l-k. metro police found javante stockyard... near the basketball

gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police tell us after talking with witnesses they believe the shooting was an accident. charges have not been made yet./// ((nia wong)) residents in a southwest valley neighborhood are urging county officials to look into a possibly dangerous construction site. they say loud construction blasts are coming from crews as they level off the mountain to expand 'highland hills near toscana vineyards. commissioner susan brager says the blasting here is on hold and plans to meet with all those involved on tuesday. but a discovery by one resident has some neighbors worried about immediate safety. ((howard mccarley, concerned neighbor "i found a string of about 50 or 60 feet of yellow and green wire with clear plastic connectors on it tied into some red plastic tubing that then seems to go underground.")) ((nia wong)) >> neighbors say wesco drilling and blasting --the company behind the construction-- said they plan to continue with another 4-6 weeks of blasting which should pick up sometime after this weekend.

happens next./// ((nia wong)) a north las vegas church is picking up the pieces--- after an arsonist set fire to their building. it happened at holy trinity a-m-e church near lake mead and fifth street early friday morning. we're told the damage from the fire is estimated to cost the congregation ten-thousand dollars. the pastor of holy trinity says they don't believe this incident was a hate crime.
