((christianne klein)) >> and i'm christianne klein. the amount of mercury found at the school is significantly more than first reported... now it's been revealed that a quarted of a cup was discovered. ((paul joncich)) >> more than 12-hundred students and staff members were quarantined on wednesday but it's believed the chemical had been on school grounds for much longer. 8 news now reporter karen castro is live outside the campus where the clean up efforts continue. karen? ((karen castro)) >> last word from the epa, the gym is still being decontaminated. it's expected to be cleaned up today. all day long, there has been a steady flow of parents coming to pick up their children's' belongings. meanwhile, concerned moms and dads are bringing personal items to be screened as well. classes have been canceled since thursday, after the epa found a quarter of a cup of mercury at the school. since then, at least 100 parents have stopped by to get pieces of clothing, shoes, and school supplies tested for mercury.
evaluation. at least 75 homes have been screened for mercury. one family was asked to leave their house over the weekend due to the high levels of the chemical. they are not being allowed back in until the homeowner works something out to decontaminate the property. we're told they are being assisted by the red cross. it's unclear if the home may be the source of the mercury. ((steve calanog epa: i can't speculate on that, there's a, there's an investigation that's ongoing by the school district's law enforcement agency.)) ((karen castro)) district is also not saying who is responsible, adding to the frustration among parents. they tell me all they want is answers and they are not getting them. some are even exploring their legal options. the families of some students are joining forces. a facebook group called "parents of walter johnson jr. high las vegas" has been created to keep eachother informed. nine people are dead including six children after a fire ripped through a home in memphis, tennessee. fire officials say the home had a security door and bars on the windows. --- and the family was was unable to open the bars in time to escape. reports show the fire only burned 25 percent of the home. most of the fatalities were caused by smoke inhalation. investigators say t f firefighters found a smoke detector, but it was too damaged to tell if it was working. (('nothing in our training can truly prepare us for this type of heartbreaking event, as i walked through with the paramedics and first responders this morning, i could see the pain in their eyes and i could see the heavy emotions in their hearts. they were emotionally drained."))
