((shakala alvaranga)) dave and christianne, we're talking about nevada's busiest stretch of highway ... it shut down about an hour ago. and it will stay this way for the next 36 hours. it's all part of project neon ....a major plan to widen the 15. and this is the first major portion of road construction that's happening. if you are travelling this way tonight, n-dot will now be detouring traffic to the 15-north. big this is... during rush hour, about 31-hundred cars pass onto this ramp ... that connects southbound 95 to interstate 15-south. the plan is to demolish the bridge that goes over symphony park avenue. the goal of this project is to ease traffic ... but it'll likely cause a few headaches for drivers in the process. detours will stay in place for about 4 months until a new bridge is built.

ridiculous./// ((dave courvoisier)) the environmental protection agency has given the all clear at a las vegas home contaminated with some of the same mercury found at johnson junior high school. an epa official tells us they removed carpet and other items, then pronounced it safe to occupy and gave the all- clear on wednesday. there's no sign of the epa's presence at the home - you wouldn't even know they'd been there. all of this, following a mercury scare at johnson junior high a week ago wednesday. e and staff had to be cleared. it took until the wee hours of the morning./// ((christianne klein)) a metro officer suffered back.. neck and leg injuries after being hit by a suspected drunk driver this morning. it happened just after 4 this morning near durango and tropicana. the officer was on a motorcycle. the officer was taken to umc trauma... although his injuries are non-life threatening. police say the driver of the car was 19-year-old david williams. he did stop and try to help. williams was arrested for

((brittany edney)) >> while we don't have the specifics of how well tournament of kings is doing.. mgm resorts says their show isn't going anywhere ((brittany edney)) "tournament of kings" has been entertaining crowds since 1990... but as older hotels are torn down and new acts are continuously added... some are left wondering... in big numbers? ((sam kuntz, visitor "the generations have changed, you've got to bring new acts in to go with the generations.")) ((brittany edney)) we asked mgm resorts how the show is doing, particularly after the implementation of the paid parking program... and the company didn't comment on visitor numbers or ticket sales ((sam kuntz, visitor "if they're still getting the audience participation, i think they should keep it but if they're struggling to keep 50% coming to see the shows every day then it's time to cycle it out of there."

making that happen. 8 news now reporter shakala alvaranga shares one graduate's story. for these 28 former inmates, this oath ... is about never looking back. (("i accomplished something so this is like my first graduation. i never graduated from high school or middle school because i was in and out of jail. i feel good. i feel good.")) this is deshay taylor's last shot. going away for life or worst...dead." he shared his story with us today. his back ground in l.a. gangs ... and how it only got worse when his brother was shot to death by a police officer. "as my brother turned around they shot him 3 times in the back, wasn't armed...i don't know why the officer did it but it kind of tore me up." today ... he's turning a new

was holding on was destroying me." he told us he forgives the officer. "not every officer is the same." the program, called hope for prisoners, is designed to give people like deshay ... another chance. (("there's a stigma attached to having a background. it's traditionally hard to get a job, it's hard to get reaclimated back into your family, back into your workplace, and even into the community." )) the graduates make an 18 month commitment and go through 40 hours of intensive training. (("traditionally we're tasked with putting people in jail and then we "it's important for us to identify ways to prevent recidivism because that circular door eventually wears out." )) we asked deshay what made him change his ways. his honest answer? he's tired. siegfried and roy have been taking part in this tradition at hofbrauhaus here in las vegas for more than a dozen years.. hundreds of people took part in the festivities, singing traditional german songs, and of course, drinking beer..
