a plot of land right next to the new convention center development is on the market. thanks for joining us... i'm denise valdez. ((dave c ourvoisier)) >> and i'm dave courvoisier. the land comes with a huge price tag... yet, the seller will likely take a hit from their initial purchase of the property back in 2008. ((denise valdez)) >> here's a look at where we're talking about... the parcel of land sits between the peppermill... and what use to be the riviera. ((dave courvoisier)) 8 news now anchor christianne klein talked exclusively with the owners today.. ((christianne klein)) approximately 5 and a half acres just a few hundred feet away from the convention center expansion. ((christianne klein)) >> triple 5 development purchased this land for 33 million an acre back in 2008.. four months before the start of the economic crisis.. now they're hoping someone will buy this land for 30 million an acre... a nearly 17 million hit to their initial investment... but officials with triple 5 are realistic about that asking

patient to find the right buyer... and even build their own project if there are no takers.. (( james grindstaff/vice president- triple five development we envision that we will one day have a high rise hotel.. at one point there was a deal here for a conrad hotel anything's potential. we'd like to have a nice national brand name hotel along with potentially a casino and some convention space to compliment our next door neighbor the convention center : )) ((christianne klein)) >> if developed properly they believe the front door to a 100 feet away from the front of the new convention center expansion.. ((christianne klein)) >> triple 5 also has another parcel of land on the south end of the strip.. 18 point five acres.. they've already talked with potential partners to offer up 100 acres of land.. which they believe could be a good place for a potential raider stadium... this happened early sunday morning near lake mead and belmont street. when officers arrived... they found the man laying in the street with gunshot wounds. he was taken to u-m-c where he later died. police do not have a clear description of the shooter only that a blue pickup truck may have been used in the getaway./// ((denise valdez)) and six people are recovering after a crash in north las vegas today. a total of five cars were involved... including a moped. this shut down the intersection police investigated. police tell us a combination of speeding and not obeying traffic signals likely led to the crash. everyone hurt in the crash is expected to make a full recovery./// ((denise valdez)) this crash comes after a deadly weekend on valley roads. the first was friday night... when a driver was killed when he ran a red light at tropicana and koval... crashing into several other cars. about an hour later... a motorcyclist died near eastern and owens when he was speeding and doing wheelies before losing

a motorcyclist died in a wreck near moapa. two more accidents happened sunday... first a hit and run at searles and 21st... where one person on a scooter suffered serious injuries. and another where a truck rolled over on the i-15 at cheyenne. that driver died at umc./// ((dave courvoisier)) nevada could have five new lawmakers by the end of the week. the state needs to fill vacancies as it prepares for a potential legislative session... to approve an n-f-l stadium funding plan. the clark county commission will replacements for former assembly members marilyn kirkpatrick and erv nelson. three others will be appointed by commissioners in washoe county. if approved... a portion of the hotel room tax would be used to fund the state's 750- million- dollar portion of the nearly two- billion- dollar stadium./// ((dave courvoisier)) the future of some of our roads is in the hands of voters. question 5 on november's ballot would increase a gas tax over the next ten years to fund road projects. 8 news now reporter karen castro

((karen castro)) the rtc and ndot have big plans for southern nevada roads. there are an estimated 364 road projects planned with a price tag of 6.2 billion dollars. but there's one major problem. they are all unfunded. the only way to pay for them is if voters approve question 5 in november. ((terry george - driver: i'm undecided right now but hey, we'll see what happens.)) ((karen castro)) the ballot measure would increase a gas tax in clark county between 2 and 4 cents annually fore two and a half billion dollars. ((bill wellman fix our roads campaign: we're trying to gain support, you know, financially, frankly. and as we move forward you'll start seeing the campaign really just about to kick off.)) ((karen castro)) bill wellman is campaigning in favor of question 5. he says the fuel tax would not only fund new construction, but also repairs. in fact, he says about 40-percent of the unfunded projects are for maintenance. by 2026, the gas tax may increase up to 40-cents. clark county commissioners will vote to approve a limit on the increases. ((bill wellman fix our roads campaign: the county commission at any given time can say, now we got enough, its too much in the event that it got out of control. they can always stop it.)) ((karen castro)) in 2013, commissioners approved a 10-cent gas tax over three years. that tax expires this year. voters will decide whether to continue fuel reveni or not. ((dave courvoisier)) >> tomorrow clark county commissioners are holding a public hearing before taking a vote on capping the proposed gas tax. the meeting starts at 9 in the morning at the clark county building./// ((dave courvoisier)) speaking of gas... people in the southeast are stocking up on gasoline. the reason... a massive fuel spill in central alabama. some governors issued an emergency declaration which

road longer to make fuel deliveries... since a pipeline could not be used to deliver the gasoline. many gas stations in the southeastern part of the country ran out of gas as people were concerned about a shortage and price gouging./// ((denise valdez)) back here at home... get ready for more cone zones! city leaders were on hand today to kick off a 2- year- construction project to widen a stretch of the i-15. the interstate will be widened between craig road and the speedway. it will cost 34 million dollars to expand that stretch of this should help people get to the speedway for nascar events and the electric daisy carnival. it's expected to take two years to complete... and there should always be at least two lanes open during construction./// ((denise valdez)) the ramp from southbound 95 to i-15 southbound is back open... after being shut down for more than 24- hours over the weekend. this was one of the first closures related to "project neon." more work is scheduled around the spaghetti bowl all month

((dave courvoisier)) doctors in nevada are prescribing patients with heavy- duty prescription painkillers... and there are political implications for those prescriptions. that's because lawmakers in our state get a huge chunk of their campaign cash from donors with ties to the prescription painkiller business. between 2006 and 2015... members of the "pain care forum" contributed more than 855- thousand- dollars to lawmakers in nevada. and there have been about 19- b the past decade to represent "pain care forum" here in nevada. just last year... nearly 2.4 million prescriptions were issued for opioid painkillers in our state... that's almost one prescription for every person in nevada. nevada isn't alone, though... drugmakers and their advocacy groups spent more than 880- million- dollars on campaign contributions across the country over the past decade./// ((dave courvoisier)) meanwhile... a new report from the american academy of pediatrics says

codeine to children under 18. codeine has been linked to dangerous side effects and rare deadly breathing reactions, but some doctors still prescribe it to treat pain or cough in kids. ((denise valdez)) the anxiety over finding a place to sit in the lunchroom could be over... a los angeles area high school student has developed an app that helps students find other classmates to eat lunch with. kristine lazar reports. junior high school wasn't kind to 16-year-old natalie hampton. "i was physically attacked on multiple occasions. in addition to that, i was cyber-bullied and verbally attacked." lunchtime was often the hardest part of her school day. (natalie hampton, app creator) "i ate alone pretty much every day for the two years that i was there. and i have personally felt the rejection, isolation and embarrassment that go along with that." so, the sherman oaks teen decided to fight back. not with her fists, but with her phone. she recently launched a

that allows students to sign up to be ambassadors of their lunch table at school. (natalie hampton, app creator) "meaning that you agree to post open lunches and these lunches are visible to everyone else in the school, so anyone who doesn't know where to go, or doesn't know who to sit with, can join your lunch and join your table and make friends with you." the app then displays all the lunches available at your school. (kristine lazar, reporting) "the app is free to download. but before students can complete their registration, they must sign a pledge." saying they will accept anyone who tries to join their table and also work more inclusive. hampton is now at a new school and thriving. so far, there are 40 sit with us lunches at her high school. (natalie hampton, app creator) "i think the real change happens when kids help kids, because an adult telling you not to bully isn't going to stop you." in less than a week since launching, the app has been downloaded more than three-thousand times. hampton hopes it spreads to schools nationwide. ((chris maathuis)) nevada lawmakers will soon be debating the merits of taxing tourists to bring the nfl's raiders to las vegas. recommendation was turned over to the governor. there are lots of quesions surrounding the proposal... so we went seeking answers. steve sisolak/chairman cc commission; "the biggest thing in my opinion is grossly misunderstook the intricacies of the deal of hw it would function the public is going to own the stadium. jeremy aguero/applied analysis;" i think it's a completely misconception, the public stadium that a private developer is putting money into, that is completely different that how it's being portrayed. steve; 'the developer hopefully will make money because if he makes money we'll make more money, the

money. if he's losing money we'll still have a delta in the revenue that we raise as a result of taxes." there are safeguards in the proposal that will protect the public in case the economy tanks. jeremy;"the only thing i will tell you is the way everything is modeled... we're generating 1/1/2 times more revenue than is necessary to pay the bonds by the amount of room tax we're bringing on, so we would need an economic downturn worse then the great recession." steve; "we've got a caviet in there coming out of the windfall wc overage, the poit five of coverage money to allow two years of debt service money to be accumulated before it could be used for other things, so i'm confident that the public is protected.," the developer only makes money off of stadium events...but as he makes money so does the public. steve; "mr adelson does not own the stadum people are saying we're giving money to a billionaire.. while he might want to own the stadium he doesn't own the stadum.. taxpayer owns the stadum.. he's got to go buy the land, put in an events company, but the

stock and barrell." some of the taxes raised... live entertainment tax... lodging tax, gaming tax sales tax.. all that revenue goes back to public services. jeremy; "does the developer sort of make all this money, the anwser to that question is absolutely not." there was a time when tourists laughed at steve wynn's volcano... but this is a city that is constantely reinventing itself. steve; "this is just another invention of las vegas and i think we'll look back the las vegas raiders win a super bowl and we'll say a brought them to las vegas." ((chris maathuis)) the governor is now reviewing the recommendat tion... it's expected he'll call a special session of the legislature in about two weeks. lets say unlv's schedule gets a lot lighter this week and for the next few weeks. after getting pounded at central michigan, unlv gets to come back
