but they say a third vehicle, with a suspected drunk driver behind the wheel, ultimately caused the crash. metro police say officers on patrol saw a white corvette and a kawasaki motorcycle take off racing from the intersection of sahara and lamb. but not too far down sahara, a toyota yaris pulling out from a driveway... cut in front of the motorcycle. police believe the motorcycle was spen attempt to stop... before rear ending the yaris. metro says they believe the driver of the yaris was drunk and he was taken into custody. the rider remains hospitalized in critical condition. the crash happened in front of an apartment complex. residents tell us speeding and car wrecks are common along this stretch of road. (( bernice pierce - concerned resident: we've had several. it looks like they're increasing as the years and the months go by we have more heavy traffic and more speeding, it's like a speedway, sometimes.)) ((christianne klein)) a woman is in the hospital... after being thrown from the top of a car. police say the woman may have been riding on top of the car around 8:30 this morning. this happened near desert inn and joe- w- brown- drive. the driver was also taken to the hospital. right now it isn't clear why the woman was on the roof./// ((paul joncich)) it's now been 36- years since a massive fire raced through the casino at the old m-g-m grand. the fire was sparked by an electrical short in a restaurant kitchen. the flames quickly spread through the casino. back then... hotel stairwells locked from the inside... so people trying to escape were

earthquake hit japan today. the magnitude 7- point- 3 quake struck off the coast of fukushima. the tsunami warning is for it was a pretty shallow earthquake... only six miles deep... which means it was likely felt by a lot of people. this is also the area that's home to the nuclear power plant that was destroyed by a huge tsunami following an earthquake in 2011./// ((christianne klein)) four police officers across the country have been shot in the last 24 hours. the st. louis police chief says one of his officers was 'ambushed' while sitting in his patrol car in traffic.

(nats/0:01/mon0028) scene nats (track/mon0028) this was not the only case of an officer being shot in the line of duty in the last 12 hours... a st. louis, missouri police sergeant is in critical but stable condition in what investigators are calling an ambush. the officer was sitting in traffic when another car pulled up next to him and shot him twice in the face. another missouri officer was shot during a traffic stop last night. this one in gladstone, a suburb of kansas city. the officer is expected to survive. (track/wink) and in sanibel florida, outside fort myers, officer jarred ciccone was shot in the shoulder while sitting in his car a traffic stop... ciccone was treated at the hospital and released. hena daniels cbs news ((christianne klein)) >> authorities say the suspects wanted in the gladstone and st. louis attacks were both sh in sanibel, florida, police say the suspect barricaded himself in his home and was later taken into custody. and just within the last hour... a suspect was arrested in the san antonio shooting./// ((paul joncich)) a local woman has been arrested... accused of murdering her boyfriend. metro police say 35-year-old cheryl rheamount shot her boyfriend and left him in a vehicle... in the desert area near the intersection of east judson avenue and dolly lane last night. officers were dispatched to her

these are temps we haven't seen since february as we finally dropped below normal. temps today near 60 and unseasonably cooler than the mid 60's we're supposed to be at. winds still remain breezy at times as well but will decrease even more tomorrow and into our weekend. we have plenty of sunshine as well but become milder by the weekend. ................................

group of kids... who got caught up in a police chase in pennsylvania. check out this surveillance video showing the kids standing outside... when a police car narrowly misses them... before slamming into a vehicle. the officers were chasing a stolen car when a van hit the cruiser... spinning it out of control. the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries... all of the kids are okay. the driver of the stolen vehicle escaped./// ((christianne klein)) the first major snow storm of the season has dumped more than northeast. tony dokoupil reports from new york. ((brian loftus)) joined again m lets get right into our first question about the volleyball court at veterans memorial park volleyboall court with help of the eagle scout project. apparently the group shoveled and raked over 550 tons of sand. this is a great way to create a new and improved attraction. mayor rod woodbury: right, it's at our veterans memorial park in boulder city. it was really a community project. we had over 800 volunteers, 200+ man hours of work and moving that stuff around. it's kind of modeled after the volleyball court at sunset park. it used to be this rough sand in there where you'd have basically a kitty litter box and kids

((kirsten joyce)) with everybody helping, that's nice! mayor, recently there've been some development proposals and discussion about residential growth in slo-growth boulder city. what's the latest? mayor rod woodbury: as you know, we have slow-growth ordinances out in boulder city and because of i-11 and the unknowns about what's going to happen, the busines about what do we do? do we grow? do we stay where we're at? then we had a developer propose a 640 acre master planned community recently, which is a little out of whack with what we're used to. so the discussion is alive out there. it's kind've the growth pains, maybe a little bit of an identity crisis, to just determine what we really want out in boulder city and where we're going to the future.

tell us a little more about him and why the city brought him on. mayor rod woodbury: his name is hyun kim. he comes to us from wyoming, where he was basically the city manager, but he's a local. he went to foothill high school, unlv grad, and we're looking forward to it. our prior finance director went to take a job in south carolina as a city manager there. mr kim comes to us with great accolades from wyoming. people person, great manager. we're looking forward to seeing ((brian loftus)) sounds like a nice addition. that as well. so we have big festivities. those always fill up, line the street, fill up the rec center so you gotta get there early. but we always have great festivities out there. we enjoy it.
