>> el chapo was captured following a month-long hunts after his latest escape from prison. and the largest lottery jackpot ever. wednesday's powerball drawing now worth an estimated $1.3 billion. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are following breaking news from the music world. pop icon david bowie has died after a battle with cancer. he was 69 years old. mark phillips is in london with a look at the singer's groundbreaking career. mark, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the announcement was a brief one this morning and it caused shock, not just in the music world and the broader cultural world, but right around the world, in fact, such was the influence of david bowie's character and characters over the course of his career.

a family release on twitter, surrounded by family and after, as you say, an world but the political world. any appreciation of bowie's life any obituary has to deal with more than one character but with a series of rock and artistic characters he created over the course of his career, beginning probably with the one people find most familiar, the ziggy sar dust, major tom character which was one of his major hits, but his influence and his career through two or three more decades of rock and pop is just beginning to be appreciated now. the shocking news that he has died. >> indeed.

he just put out a cd on friday and no one expected this and very few people knew he was battling cancer. mark phillips in london, thank you. the cartel leader known as el chapo was captured friday after a dramatic manhunt. we are learning new details about actor sean penn's role reports. >> reporter: drug kingpin guzman is back in prison that tumbled out of six months ago but had he days may be numbered. mexican authorities have begun the process to send him to the united states. while most of his lawyers are exciting extradition, a news source told cbs news el chapo to be in the u.s. the next four for six weeks.

on the cbs "moneywatch." gm reveals its chinese made car. and the home of the "playboy" bunny is up for sale. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. stocks in asia sharp lower following wall street's losses. shanghai composite dropped 5%. the nikkei is closed for a holiday. the markets in the u.s. reopened in a few hours after a tumultuous week on wall street that left the indices in the red. dow plunged 1,082 points last week. that is more than 6%. s&p 500 dropped 122 points. also losing about 6%. the nasdaq fell 364 points, or more than 7%. we areetting our first look at general motors buick and vision crossover. the first new vehicle that is in fully manufactured and imported from china.

"the hill" reports the white house renewed its promise to close guantanamo bay by the end of the president's final term. the president's chief of star repeated the pledge on thursday, saying the u.s. terrorist detention facility in cuba is expensive and, quote, bad for our national security. the u.s. army corps of engineers opened a spillway in louisiana two divert part of the rising mississippi river. it's draining some water from the river, sending 1.25 million cubic feet of water gushing into

to support the syrian regime. bill whitaker filed this report. >> reporter: it was almost midnight when our plane took off from a russian air base outside moscow. as we started to take pictures out the windows, we were told no, something we heard often during the next three days. what is this? >> no, no, no. >> reporter: this was the first face we saw after landing. that is syrian president bashar al assad. this once was a syrian airport. since the summer, the russians have built barracks and brought in 4,000 personnel, paved roads, rolled in truckloads of equipment and munitions, erecting a bit of russia in the heart of assad-controlled syria. this is mostly friendly territory. at least 20 miles from the closest front lines. but the russians aren't taking any chances.
