it's thursday, january 21st, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." a snow alert for millions in the biggest cities. a major snowstorm buries down on the east with some areas already getting a preview of the wintry weather. financial markets continue to tumble after the latest triple digit losses on wall street. foreign markets take another hit overnight. and the buffalo bills make nfl history by hiring the first woman to a full-time coaching position. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the brunt of a potentially crippling

life-threatening snowstorm is bearing down on the mid-atlantic region. but the big storm will affect an area from arkansas to new england. the nation's capital is in the bull's-eye and it started to snow there last night. washington is preparing for blizzard conditions this weekend and up to two feet of snow. don champion is here in new york city where up to one foot of snow is forecast. don, good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. this is certainly the calm before the storm. but there are still some uncertainties in terms of the storm's impact on the new york city area, but one thing looks to be for sure, people in and around the nation's capital could get the biggest storm they have seen in years. people in the d.c. metro area got a bitter taste of what to come, when nearly an inch of snow grounded traffic to a halt wednesday night. among those stuck in the mess, president obama, who endured an

hour an 12-minute ride from joint base andrews and the white house. slick roads led to collisions and pileups and even spinouts. >> i thought when i was getting on the road it was a bad idea. >> reporter: friday's monster storm is forecast to bring blizzard like conditions to d.c. and baltimore and surrounding areas, pummeling the area with 12 to 24 inches of snow. >> we've already asked for additional national guard vehicles and we would be prepared to ask for personnel. >> reporter: ahead of what forecasters say could be a paralyzing winter storm, road crews began filling trucks with salt. residents rushed to stores for supplies and food. >> the fridge is packed and we have plenty of water. >> reporter: with the system forecast to move further east over the weekend, storms are not the only concern. they began building berms along the new jersey shore. as of now, forecasters say new

york city and new england could be spared the brunt of the nor'easter. as you can imagine, air travel is expected to be quite a mess because of the storm. all of the major airlines have already started issuing waivers to passengers who want to change their weekend travel plans. >> it's going to be pretty challenging here in the northeast over the next few days. don champion here in new york, thank you, don. besides the heavy snow and ice, coastal flooding will be an issue from maryland to long island. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the big storm is just starting to rev up. >> reporter: today is the day where our big east coast storm starts to develop and the first stop is the gulf of mexico. this is where it gathers some moisture along the gulf coast and producing heavy rain and thunderstorms. then it turns to the east coast. outside of the chesapeake. that is a textbook area for some big mid-atlantic snow. we will start with today, first. we have a chance of severe weather along the gulf coast and damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and even a couple of isolated

tornadoes. that severe threat heads over to florida for friday. looking at this hour-by-hour, here comes the heavy rain for today. as we head into the day on friday, now we have got a full-fledged snowstorm developing and also a major ice storm for much of north carolina and that could have big consequences for power outages and for travel. we head into saturday morning, the snow is moving up into new york city. during the day on saturday lifting into southern new england and about as far north as this storm gets. so 1 to 2 foot totals here in the blue area and the epi center likely around washington, d.c. and baltimore and two feet may fall and blizzard conditions and keeping an eye on coastal flooding which would be a big story for the jersey shore. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >> we will have the latest on the snowstorm coming up on "cbs this morning." this morning, the story is snow and cold. but last year, the story was record breaking heat. 2015 was the hottest year on record. for the most part, scientists blame man-made global warming

and a powerful el nino weather system. according to the noaa, for the first time, earth is nearly two degrees warmer than it was in preindustrial times. now to politics. donald trump is pulling away in new hampshire. a new cnn poll finds trump holding a 20-point lead among republican voters in the granite state and that is more than double his nearest competitor ted cruz. trump was joined by sarah palin at a rally in oklahoma yesterday. palin, who endorsed trump, linked the recent arrest of her son trac on domestic violence charges to what she says is a lack of support by president obama. her son spent a year deployed in iraq. >> my son, like so many others, they come back a bit different. thth come back hardened and they come back wondering if there is that respect for what it is that

their fellow soldiers and airmen and every other member of the military so given to this and that starts from the top. >> palin says she can relate to other families feeling the effect of ptsd. a crash of oil prices and the concern of the global economic picture triggered a worldwide stock sell-off. this morning, stocks in china ended lower. china's shanghai lost 3% of its value. hena daniels is at the new york stock exchange with the details. >> reporter: good morning. stocks on wall street are off to their worst start of a year ever. the slump continued yesterday as oil suffered its worst one-day drop since september. the dow jones lost 249 points and that is after a late recovery. it had been down over 560 points. the s&p 500 dropped 22 points and down to its lowest level in nearly two years. the nasdaq slipped five points. investor with a drop in oil prices means the global

economy is slowing, in particular, china. the drastic drop in the price of oil is due to oversupply. u.s. oil stockpiles are at their highest levels in 80 years, the price of u.s. crude fell to $22.65. down nearly 7%. the price of u.s. crude is down 28% for the year. trading at its lowest level since 2003. the plunging price of oil is good news at the gas pump. the average price of unleaded in the u.s. has dropped to $1.87 a gallon. >> hena daniels at the new york stock exchange. hena, you will be back with more business headlines a little bit later on in the broadcast, so we will see you then. michigan governor's rick snyder wants president obama to reconsider his decision not to declare a federal disaster due to the flint water crisis. more than a hundred thousand flint residents are getting bottled water delivered to their homes. governor rick snyder released e-mails about the crisis and as

questions to answer. >> governor, is the water in flint safe today? >> we don't want to consider it safe, scott. >> reporter: michigan governor rick snyder admitted to cbs news scott pelley that flint's contaminated water situation got away from his state agency charged with oversight. >> they were too technical. they followed literally the rules. they didn't use enough common sense. >> reporter: wednesday, snyder released e-mails that reveal he was aware of complaints about water quality from flint residents dating back as far as last february. eight months later, flint switchedack to detroit's water system but the damage to the pipes was done. >> what is inexplicable and inexcusable is once people figured out that there was a problem there and there was lead in the water, the notion that immediately, families weren't notified. >> reporter: cases of bottled water are pouring into this warehouse and now there are enough supplies and people to

a red convertible at a gas station outside miami, the car's owner, a mother, sprung into action. she ran back to the driver's door and hurled one man out. her two children were inside the car. police later catch the would-be thieves. you go, mamma bear. a possible new world discovered in our solar system and the so-called affluenzteen may soon be home. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "dallas morning news" reports so-called affluenza teen ethan couch could be back in the u.s. in weeks. 18-year-old ethan couch i i no longer fighting his return from mexixi. he and his mother traveled there last month after a possible probation violation. couch killed four people while driving drunk in 2013. "usa today" reports former pharmaceutical executive martin shkreli is called to testify at an upcoming hearing on the drug

market. the house is accusing several drug companies accused of massive price hikes. last year, shkreli raised one drug's price by 5,000th percent. science" magazine reports a ninth planet may be lurking on the edge of the solar system. scientists found evidence of a planet almost the size of neptune and may have rings and moons. if it exexts, it's so far away, that it takes up to 10,000 years to orbit the sun. and "the new york times" reports changes are about to be announced aiaed at making oscar choices more diverse. the academy of motion picture arts and sciences is facing criticism because all of this year's nominated actors are white and all of the best director nominees are male. still to come, pushing back "statawars." the next episode of the blockbuster franchise will be released later than planned. we will tell you how long you'll have to wait. >> it's true.

eight's release date to december 15th, 2016. it was supposed to be released in may of that year. disney didn't explain why, but it's rumored the script is being rewritten. on the cbs "moneywatch," general motors launching a new car sharing service and nike releases a black history month collection. hena daniels is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. general motors is launching a new car sharing service called maven and it will start right away to serve the university of michigan community, before expanding to two major communities later in the year. you can rent a car $6 through an apap there is no membership fee. the world's largest retailer walmart says it's giving most of its employees a pay raise. more than $1.2 million hourly walmart workers in the u.s. will see a bump in their paychecks beginning february 20th. the average full-time hourly wage will be $13.38 an hour.

average for hourly retail workers. amamon is offering a full refund on any hoverboard sold on its site. the popular two-wheel balancing boards have been plagued by falls resulting in serious injuries and fires. the consumer product safety commission has been investigating hoverboard safety since december. it recommends anyone using a hoverboard have a fire extinguisher nearby when using or charging the boards. >> nike is back with its black history month collection. nike introduced a special collection starting in 2005. this year, nike says the lineup was inspired by the likes of serena williams and kobe bryant and chris paul. there are 28 total products, shoes, and sportswear being released. the collection starts with shoes that started the bhm collection nike air force one. >> hena daniels at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot, hena. coming up on "cbs this morning," the future of

a historic hire, adding the first woman in nfl history as a full-time member of their coaching staff. kathryn smith is taking over as special teams quality control coach for next season. smith spent this year as an administrative assistant for the bills' coaches. she has been with head coach rex ryan the past seven seasons and going back to when he coached the jets. ryan praised smith, saying in a statement, she has proven that she is ready for the next step, so i'm excited and proud for her with this opportunity. well, don't look now. but as the newewngland patriots close in on another super bowl appearance, there's a new controversy over footballs at their home stadium. fore last week's playoff game at gillette stadium, an official forgot some of the balls and pressure gauges in his hotel room. massachusetts state police were called and they delivered the balls to the stadium. the incident happened two days before the first anniversary of the deflategate scandal in the afc championship game.

this giant drone named the megacopter lifted payload 134 pounds, not including the weight of the drone itself. it has 48 propellers and took 18 months to build. a touching moment at tennis australian open on wednesday. ninth seeded joe wilfried noticed things didn't look so well for a ball girl at the side of the court, so he stopped the match to check on her and she apparently was not feeling well. as you canan see, tsonga escorted her off the court. the frenchman won the match in straight sets. here is how much better the golden state warriors are playing better than any other team in the nba. earlier in last night's game against chicago, two warriors actually stopped to tie their shoes as the rest of the team heads up ththcourt. moments later, harrison barnes who is all by himself with five bulls around him, sinks jump shot. golden state wins by 31 points and improves to a league best record of 39-4.
