topping our news this morning a warning for moms. a gang of thieves targeting your purse while you're dropping off your kids at day care. what to look for just ahead. >> denver is turning shades of broncos orange and blue as we gear up for their first playoff contest against the steelers. it's especially exciting for one players mom. the chase for the championship is on. >> first let's talk about a little snowy weekend for the mountains. fresh snow over night and even this weekend. % the front rake could see a little bit of flurries as we take a look at our alerts we

off to the west. now this expired early on this morning but we have another one that comes this evening. you will notice it does not effect the metro area or eastern plains. we do have light snowfalling early on up in the high country. that will continue throughout the day. later on this evening closer to 5:00-5:30 we will start to see that snow fill in and we could be looking at some locations higher than 11,000 feet. later this evening watch that northeast corner. some of that snow will drop on down. for the front range of the metro area really mostly dry, just a chance for a few flurries. fast forward to tomorrow, that is the big game taking place. you will notice mostly clear skies here in the metro area. still snow off to the west but we could see flurries early on. by noon 36. it's ccld this morning.

we will see that increase in clouds as the snow really does begin to move in. it is going to be a pretty cold day across the state. this morning we begin with the broncos chase for the championship. the orange and blue is taking over the mile high city. fans very excited for tomorrow's first play off game against the steelers. even streets around denver are being changed up. denver mayor michael hancock renamed -- lindsay wattssis live downtown with look at all the excitement. >> reporter: good morning, eric. the street sign is right across from the city and county building. take a look. broncos boulevard here. and this is just one piece of the pride and excitement for the team that we're seeing all around the city right now. there are signs and banners. building are it will up. i was just at dia and wednesday and there are decoration there

has formed a task force called the felony lame gang task force. >> we are working three cases right now. >> reporter: investigators say the gang has been targeting moms at several day care centers, open spaces and gyms in arapaho and douglas county. >> as soon as i heard what was going on, i wasn't going to be a target. >> we put a flier ut and warned the parents of what is going on. don't leave stuff in the car and be vigilant. >> julie brooks at the arapaho county sheriffs office says the felony lane gang is recruiting low level operatives here who will take the fall if they get arrest preponderance they want

close attention to their surroundings. there is a spot open on the fbi's ten most wanted list. milo mason is in the jefferson county jail. investigators learned that mason was staying at a motel six there. swat team surrounded the building and then officers evacuated everyone. they called over a loud speaker for mason to come out. the fbi says they came out with his hands up and arrested mason is believed to have robbed two banks at gunpoint. now in one of those, two bystanders got shot. thankfully both survived. a quiet friday night at home is anything but. a car came crashing into a condo. the truck crashed through a fence into the home at the willow ranch complex. ending up in one residents living rooming. fortunately no one was hurt. neighbors say this isn't the first time something likeethis has happened here. they say it has happened

four juveniles are in custody this morning facing charges after a chase and crash near sloans lake thursday night. the three are being held on suspicion of auto theft. a man police say is extremely daagerous is behind bars this morning. he's accused of killing two people and kidnapping his two daughters from michigan. the two young girls were both in the car when he was arrested. they are okay and are now in protective custody. it's 7:07. a petition filed in the planned parenthood shooting case asking the colorado supreme court to unseal details of the case against alleged shooter robert deer junior. several news outlets filed the petition. saying the public has a right to what is going on in the

deer is charged with 179 crimes. we have breaking news over seas. at least 23 people died in the seize including four of the attackers. two of which are women. at least 33 others are injured. a new report out this morning says this year another 1 million refugees will be trying to enter europe. that issaccording to new u.n. projection. mosttwill be women and children. syrians, afghans, and iraqis make up the bulk. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is heading to austria wwere will be meeting with his iranian counterpart. the two will be discussing the proguess being made. before that deal takes effeet,

think. penn says he wanted to start a conversation about the failure on the war on drugs. he says traffickers like el chapo are not the ones responsible for drug addiction. it's a sentiment that the king ping echoed. >> we are going to put all our focus, all of our energy, all of our billions of dollars on the bad guy and what happens? you get another death the next day. >> so authorities say the meeting was instrumental in helping recapture el chapo after six months of him being on the run. right now he is being held at that same prison from which he escaped in july while he awaits extradition back to the united states. reagan's fame has come up again and again. presidency.

it is 7:17. we are still tracking things at i-70. how long is the delay? >> they say it takes 90 minutes right now from c-470 up to the eisenhower tunnel. it's an additional 45 minutes. if you have not left yet, either pack your patience or stop for breakfast somewhere. >> we keep saying 6:30. 6:30. maybe not though. >> i had someone last week `weet me that said 6:30 is almost too late. 6:00 a.m. you have to be on the road if you want to miss this. people are excited about the fresh snow. so the mountains really depending upon where you go

in the last 24 hours. some of the other locations around i-70 picked up 3-4 inches. i want to take you out east right now. isn't it gorgeous? this is what you are waking up to this morning. it looks pretty but eric, have you stepped outside? it's cold. temperatures in the teens in many locations. and also we've got a little bit of wind and we all know whaa that means when it's that cold it makes it feel even colder. look at our windchill values. here in value it feels like seven degrees. greeley it feels like two. and lineman it feels like a big goose egg out there. it is really cold statewide and it's not going to be a really warm day today. the sunshine is going to make a difference but you can get into that sun it will feel a little bit warmer. by 9:00 a.m. we will only be in the 20s. by noon 36. but there is the sunshine and then as we top out right about 38 the clouds are going to

chance for a little bit of snow later on this evening. i will show you the metro area will stay dry. it looks like it will be in the high country and out on that northeast corner. temperatures in the mountains. once you get there it will be in the 20s.. 23 in steam boat. a little warmer as we head toward that weesern slope. and grand junction at 31 you will notice out on the eastern plains the temperatures `ill be a little warmer in that southeast corner where we will see 40s. we had winter weather advisories that expired early on this morning. the snow has quieted down. but it will pick up later tonight so these go into effect at 6:00 p.m. and will run through early tomorrow morning. you will notice really light flurries early on. a few clouds for the metro. but look how that snow really does fill in nd picks up in intensity. now after 5:00, watch this corner.

you can sse it fill in from greeley to sterling and burlington and lineman. that will be through the over night hours and early tomorrow morning. here's what it looks like at 5:30. waking up to that snow. couple inches in the northeast corner. up in the high country we will be picking up 7 inches. metro area some clouds early on. and yes, we do have the chance for some of the low lying clouds to have a few flurries accumulation. fast forward to 2:00 ww have the big game. even is wanting to know what it will be like.. it will be cold but at least it won't be wet. majority of it. chance for flurries should bee gone for the metro area. if you are in the high country, we will have light snow continuing. seven-day forecast shows temperatures pretty chilly. both days there in the upper 30s. our lows are not that bad. and then as we move into the week, you will find temperatures climb pretty quickly..

it is 7:31. time for a look at our top stories this morning. first a wwrning for moms around tte sheriffs office says a gang of thieves is targeting moms while they are dropping off their kids at day care or even while they are exercising at the gym. their way into the victims cars and stealing purses. and then they are cashing their checks. one victim says the thieves are $5,000 worth f checks. anyone with information about thh crimes are asked to call the tip line.

wanted criminals captured right here in colorado. milo mason was the last of the wanted suspects in the screen masked robberies. and aaterrorist seize on hotel in west africa ends over night. 23 people died including at least four of the al-qaeda linked militants. two women were among the attackers. there are not many more details other than that. t minus a littte more than 30 hours to the broncos first playoff game of the year. >> but who is counting; right? >> i'm so pumped. >> i think even is excited about it. of course the excitement literally you walk out the door. here in denver it's pal paable.

let's give you a live look outside. it's gorgeous. the snow capped mountains a lot of fresh snowfalling off to the west. you will notice toward the foothills not as much snow. really just a gorgeous orange and blue sunrise for you. downside though it's a littte bit cold. depending upon where you are. if you're off in the mountains, we have some strong winds. speeds. some of the higher mountain passes as a result of that, it will be even colder. the temperatures though as you head out the door here in denver we're at 17 degrees. 14 in fort collins. 19 in boulder and 12 in greeley and then we have single digits off to the west. but really a lot of teens off to the west and out on the easteen plains. lamar one of the warmer locaaions right there in the low 20s. your warmup is not a big one today. it will be a slow one as well. big news is sunshine. it wiil make a huge difference. clouds will increase later on

the mountains. some locations could see some that coming up. >> thank you. it is now 7:33. %- more about the teenager who died after getting trapped under the ice in a pond. 16-year-old patrick lance was one of the three teens who had to be rescued from the pond on thursday. he was a sophomore at legend high school. lance was trapped under the ice for 35 minutes. one of the teens was able to pull himseef to safety. the other remains in credit can condition. four more people say they are okay after they got themselves strandee in the middle of an icy lake. the dive team and the denver fire department had to come to the rescue. thousand they say the group which included one adult and three kids had walked on to the ice and got stranded on a small island in the lake. the adult was ticketed. a repeat dui driver will spend more than wo decades behind bars thanks in part to video showing the reckless

garrett had more than three %- times the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he led police on this chase. he reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. this happened along i-25. this was about a year ago. as you can see at one point police threw out stop sticks that left the suspect driving on rims sending out sparks and that is what started the grass fire. eventually he crashed into another car. police say it's a miracle no one was killed. during his sentencing, a very different man apologized. >> i pray they find it in their hearts to forgive. >> even after the crash he continued to reequips. eventually officers had to tase him to get him under control. the judge sentenced him to 24

denver now has 13 new police sergeants. one of them tony lopez junior is still recovering after he was shot five times during traffic stop just over a month ago. sergeant lopez used crutches to get around during yesterday's ceremony. he's had three surgeries since the shooting. lopez's wife kristin stood on stage to help him receive his honor. strength. >> it means a ton. ii goes to show how strong of a person he true will is. that day when i got the call, i would have never expect him to come as far as he has. >> lopez and his wife are expecting a child in may. he still has a long road ahead in his recovery. right now he goes to physical therapy several times a week. oh yeah the broncos about to enter the chase for the championship. you can feel the excitement.. >> all you have to do is walk out the door. and lindsay watts is live

a little cold today with his hair cut. >> and if you take him to the dog park, frozen paws to that too. >> yeah. dog parks can be great but they can be terrible. dogs even as adults have the brains of three-year-old children and so it's a whole playground full of three-year- old unsupervised children. you have the schoolyard bullies. they say if i sit on your head i feel safer. there are dogs that will be predaaory on little guys like this. you don't ever want to take the little ones in with the big ones. there is separate areas for that. breeds like the shepards and the dobermans. so my biggest thing issdon't have your dogs in there unsupervised. protect your dog. makeesure you don't put your dog in there if there is aggressive dogs in there. make sure your dog is behaving

this. some locations the higher mountain passes say rabbit ears above 11,000 feet could be of snow. most of the other mountain towns possibby 4-7. and that is on top of anywhere from 2-7 night. great news for our ski resorts. as we look at our future cast, you will see light snow early on this morning. but it really will begin to pick up later on this afternoon and evening. and filling in. you will notice some of he heavier snow really in the northern mouutains. central mountains still picking up decent snow. watch the northeast corner though. this is where we will ee the snow drop in. right along i-25 mostly dry. now can't rule out a flurry at all. but we really should not be picking up any accumulations. 3 that northeast corner however this will be a couple inches because you can start to see even more of it fill in early tomorrow morning. %

morning and the mountains will still continue to see this snow. so if you do head up to the high country today and have plans to head back tomorrow, just be advised that travel along i-70 not so much because of the extra snow that is going to be falling, but we will be dealing with really strong early tomorrow morning and as a %- result, visibility along i-70 or if you are heading up to steam boat, rabbit ears pass will be the most difficult thing you will deal with. could still see flurries across the front range early tomorrow morning. by theeafternoon it is going to be dry. now of course that is great news for our broncos ggme and we will show you the broncos forecast in a little bit. this morning it's still cood. it looks retty outside with that sunshine. in the teens for most of the front range. up in the high country we have single digits and teens as well. the warmup will take place some. it's just going to be slow. 3 20s by 9:00 a.m.. by noon closer to 36. and then that is when we will

should top out in denver right about 38 degrees. as i mentioned this does put us below where we should be. in the high country -- that may not be right. 20s for most of the high country towns out on the eastern plains. we'll see 40s and also in that southeast corner. forecast it's kind of funny. 30, 30 and very cold and then boom jump back up into the 50s. all of the wet weather moves out. we will still have clouds through the early half of the week. but in the 40s and 50s putting us at if not above where we should be. most people like when we see the snow pack off to the west and not in the metro area. >> especially not when a broncos game is going on. we are all excited for the broncos being in the playoffs.

the roads at the eisenhower tunnel. so the snow is up there. you will just hit it a little llter as you head west and you will probably run into slow downs as well. floyd hill. there you go. slow per usual. pretty typical this time of day. we will keep an eye on that. just pack your patience and you will be fine. we are dealing with more of that snow off to the west. still light snow that is falling down. a big factor will be late this evening. 3 more snow will move in and it will cause travel along i-70 will be a little difficult. even as you head up north. you are heading toward steam boat or coming back from ssiing there. fresh snow it's hard to beat which is why we are seeing so much of that trrffic heading up there. i want to take you up to the eastern plains. we are seeing beautiful blue skies. here's a live look. yes, the wind farm. and you can see they are spinning and spinning. the winds right now pretty light. only 10 miles per hour.

and you notice not a lot of snow. it is very light. you see the low lying clouds. across the front range and eastern plains it is dry. we do have winter weather advisories that go nto effect at 6:00 this evening. run through tomorrow morning. looking for mostly about 4-7 inches of snow along the central mountains. some of the higher elevations above 11,000 feet. we could see closer to a foot of fresh snoo. and as we look at that future %- cast puuting this into motion, you can see it begin to fill in as the day moves on. the heavier snow up north right there near steam boat. but we will see some of it `race that northeast corner. so it's dropping in right about 5:00. it will start off somewhat light through the evening but over night and early tomorrow morning hat is where it will pick up for the northeast corner of the state. could be looking at couple of inches in some of the locattons. again continuing in the 3 mountains over night but right conditions.

have the chance or some flurries but we're not going to pick up any accumulation right along the front range and the metro area. and then look really at the southern half of the state not looking for a lot of moisture as well. on sunday that snow all continue for the mountains. however it will die down midday and just be light through thee afternoon. here's what it looks like across i-25. clear skies with few clouds in the northeast corner. the temperatures as you head out the door this morning taking a dog for a walk or goiig on a run it's cold. only in the teens. some single digits in the high country. as we look at our warmup, it will take place but it will be slow and it will not be a really big one. by noon 36 degrees. by 3:00 topping out at 38. that is where we will see the clouds making their way in. we'll see a few 40s in the southeast corner of the state. warmest spot for you there and then the high country 20s and across the front range really the mid to upper 30s.

pull themselves to safety. the other remained in critical condition this morning. four more people are thankful they are okay after they got themselves stranded in the middle of an icy lake in englewood. the dive team had to come to the rescue. they say the group which included one adult and three kids had walked on to the ice and got stranded on a small island in the lake. you can see it there. the adult was ticketed. it is 8:44. and a repeat dui driver will spend two decades behind bars thanks to videooshowing the reckless chase that led to his latest arrest. garrett has more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he led police on a chase. he was reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour.. this happened a year ago along i-25 in castle rock. at one point police threw out stop sticks. yyu can see here he was driving on his rims so it sent out sparks and started a grass fire

in the mountains single digits and teens. teens for the front range. and you notice lamar and boulder starting off at 23 degrees. the winds have quieted down a little bit this morning. but tonighh they will ick up yet again. for us, our temperatures will warm. just slowly. by noon 36-degrees. mostly sunny skies still at that point. clouds will increase through you will see denver topping out around 38 degrees. still dry in the metro area. 22 in frisco. 22 in eagle. and then 30s for glen wood and grand junntion. warmer locations in the southeast corner. the story we are watching is the snow that will move in. looking at satellite and radar you can see the low lying clouds don't pick up the snow we are seeing right about vail pass as you move a little fartter west. alerts winter weather advisories they start at 6:00 this evening. they expired early on this morning because the snow

bit of dry air moving in today. before more of that snow moves in. so as we look at our future cast, you will see reallyylight snow through midday tooay.. and then it will start to pick up a little bit later on this evening. northern mountains great news. steam boat juss reporting they have five iiches of snow and they will see even more tonight. central mountains picking up 4- 7 inches. that will run through this evening through tomorrow morning. what you will notice is the northeast corner of the state will pick up a couple inches of snow. the rest of us a few flurries but through the day tommrrow it will clear out and we'll see much clearer skies. doesn't mean it will be warm though. tomorrow still topping out around 39 degrees. of course we do have the big broncos game so everyone wants to know what to expect. looks like it will be dry. which yes, eric, we all know
