here's what's going to happen. the timing of this. we come out this morning on into later this evening, as the low pressure makes its way up the coast it intensifies, it continues to deepen. we're looking at snowfall rates 2 to 4 inches per hour. thunder snow possible. that's how intense this will be. wind gusts of 65 miles per hour. in order then as we go through tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon, boston you're involved, by 1:00 you've got 2 to 4 inches of snowfall per hour. the thunder snow continues, white-out conditions and look at winds, wind gusts of 80 miles per hour. that's why we're worried about major coastal flooding, power outages a big possibility. look at the snowfall totals. you add those winds to snow from 12 to 25 inches of snow, some areas as much as three feet. you could be looking at drifts of snow, guys, anywhere from 4
to 6 feet tall. we're talking major transportation systems shutting down. if it comes to fruition, we think it will, this will be one for the record books. certainly the top five from new york all the way into boston. guys. >> it's going to be so cold the snow is going to stick around. >> absolutely. al mentioned pittsburgh where we find dylan dreyer. snowing off and on. how does it look? >> the snow is light to moderate now and it's hard to believe that this is going to be connected to what will be that blockbuster nor'easter that's going to move to the northeast. i bought this yard stick. i know i'm going to need it in boston. i wanted to put into perspective how this storm is going to mutate and transform once it gets o'ver the water. we have three inches of snow in pittsburgh. as we get into tonight and tomorrow we'll be measuring up to here and even in some cases all the way up to here. especially into tonight and on
tuesday in major cities like new york and hartford, providence and boston. so how does that happen? this storm is going to bomb out once it moves offshore. that is a short-term for a phenomenon called bombogenesis. the storm intensify, we see a 24 mill a bar barometric pressure drop in 24 hours. it causes intense winds, in this case to gust near hurricane force near 70 miles per hour. that leads to coastal flooding and seas as high as 25 feet. we'll also be dealing with thunder snow, as you get to the height of the storm. my question is how am i going to get this on the plane to get to boston, that's if if my flight to boston takes off in a couple hours. we'll see. >> dylan's got a few issues there. thank you. we're going to have more on the storm throughout the morning. >> let's turn to another story, a security scare at the white house, a drone found on the grounds overnight.

threat to the plane. somebody tweeted in a bomb threat. >> reporter: officials are investigating several twitter posted related including one that says we planted explosives on board our soldier waiting for signal. the threats come a day after similar posts targeted two jets flying to atlanta prompting fighter jets to escort the planes to safety. so all five of those flights have been cleared of security concerns but officials are still investigating, and right now they cannot confirm if any of those threats are related. >> hally jacksen, thanks very much. >> tamron is in fortunately. big news in the political world. >> some big news. good morning. nbc news has learned new jersey governor chris christie is one step closer to a run for the white house this morning. this after a weekend of key gatherings of republicans. kelly o'donnell is in washington. >> good morning. fast moving changes to the gop field.

orange left but smoke blowing more up than before the wind was actually pretty powerful and that was another difficulty for firefighters so again the good news here is it is still a six-alarm fire keeping the crews here but no homes threatened. they expect to get fuller containment within an hour and at that point they will allow residents back to their homes. so a lot of progress here they say they will keep some crews here, some hand crews to cut some lines and doment so of the maintenance for the duration of the day but when it no homes threatened at this point. live in pacifica stephanie chuang "today in the bay." >> a bit of progress there, thank you very much, steph. let's check with with christina, winds are a slight concern. >> it's still gusty through there, laura, good morning to you. that wind is making all that smoke drift out toward the ocean so you might actually see that on your drive to work this morning, but that is such great news and a testament to our local heroes our local firefighters, thank you for what do you. 42 degrees in the south bay.

nbc's tom costello is at washington's reagan national, tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we have a lot of rain, win this morning. it's going to turn in snow later in the afternoon. them as it does, as it hits the mid-atlantic and the northeast corridor we've got several airports that are going to likely be hit hard over the next 48 hours. washington, baltimore, up to philly, of course all three new york airports likely affected, hartford into boston, then all the way into maine. you go west, residual effects in columbus, ohio, pittsburgh, likely chicago as well. and amtrak also worth watching because 720,000 ride every single day. amtrak says they are going to watch their 457 miles of track, 1200 bridge, it's possible they will have to close down certain lines and cancel certain trains over the course of the next 48 hours. so, this may be as calm as it gets before the storm. they were expecting snow in

other tips, you want to have an emergency kit. make sure it's full of water and blankets in case your power goes out. you need flashlights, battery, non-perishable food and the manual can opener. you want to make sure that you keep heaters and generators well ventilated so you don't start fires or carbon monoxide poisoning, make sure your car is filled with gas now. and in case your power goes out the pipes can freeze, so keep a little drip in your fau street relieve some of the pressure so your pipes don't burst. and there is a good thing to note. keep this and write this down. if your power goes out for an extended period of time and you feel unsafe text the sherd shelter to 43362 and they will give you a list of the nearest shelters. and one more thing. if you've got one of these laying around, a good old land line, get it out now, make sure you have a land line set up in
your phone because if your cell phone goes dead you can't reach out. so this is always a very good classic standby to keep yourself safe. >> all right, dylan, thank you so much. we'll talk to you in a bit. so, let's take a look. as far as snowfall here in new york city, record events, well, the number one storm was february 11-12, 2006. almost 27 inches of snow. the blizzard of 1888, matt and i remember that, 21 inches of snow. what actually constitutes a blizzard? here's what it takes. this is boston also. look at some of these top five amounts. we're looking at that. 27.6 inches. a blizzard defined. we see a blizzard as having more than three hours or more sustained wind and gusts 35 miles per hour, blowing snow, dropping visibility, less than a quarter mile, and we expect that to happen. first of all, we're going to get from 1 to 2, maybe 3 feet of snow from bangor to hartford, boston, new york city.
and we've got coastal flood watches and warnings, why, because as this system winds up, the winds are going to be such a massive problem with this. we have hurricane force wind warnings, just off boston all the way to nantucket. these winds will be really strong, there's going to be a lot of blowing and drifting snow, drifts up to 4 to 5 feet of snow. so coastal flooding, hurricane force wind and heavy snow. it's a bad combination. stay off the roads starting in 7:36. good monday morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. live look at the san francisco bay, beautiful painted sky overhead. look at how pretty you're waking up in point reyes this morning, just spectacular conditions. another beach day if you can get out there. temps will climb into the upper 70s at some of your beaches especially down in santa cruz. we'll hit 67 in san francisco, and 70 degrees in the north bay. as we get into it tomorrow you might need to bring your umbrella south of the golden
