being a record setting storm in parts of new england. to dylan dreyer, she's in marshfield about 30 miles south of boston along the coast. dylan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah and man, are we happy that's over. new england took it on the chin with this one with tropical storm force winds and feet of snow. in marshfield we saw the storm damage these homes and now in ice. as the atlantic ocean came crashing in and flooded these streets at high tide, all of the water now is frozen in place. the blizzard of 2015 is for the record books. under siege by the ocean, the storm surge punching out a 50-foot hole in the sea wall in marshfield, massachusetts, one of several communities at the mercy of the tide. >> it makes sense to get out and to a safe shelter. >> reporter: hard to find shelter on an island. nantucket battered by winds 80 miles per hour.
>> virtually everything we had has failed including as of right now our 911 is not working. it was stated by one individual we had to revert back to 1950 technology to stay in touch. >> reporter: people across new england call this blizzard wicked and not in a good way. snow everywhere, nearly 3 feet in places not counseleding the mounds created by plows. if a car won't get you there a snowmobile will do the job. the storm that slammed new england pummeled eastern long island. but the main punch of the storm only glajsed new york city and northern new jersey. the statue of liberty watched the blizzard come and go. some people felt the same. >> couldn't have been worse. we got off easy. >> reporter: a forecaster with the national weather service apologized tweeting he made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right and we didn't. once again i'm sorry. a city shut down, businesses and
public transportation closed. add in the cost of snow removal one expert estimated $1 billion in losses across the northeast. but it's not all about dollars and cents. as the snow piled up, so did the images of the storm on social media, people sharing the amazing views from a romp in the snow on video to a moment of sheer joy frozen in time. these homes also frozen in time here in marshfield. yesterday, just about everything, ever where, was shut down. in crew hardy new england fashion we saw a dunkin' donuts truck making a delivery this morning and in this area that's always a good sign. >> they are running on dunkin. thank you so much. william pittman is the chief of police on nantucket. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i guess the first question is how is it that you're able to talk to us? as i understand it power was cut off to much of the island. >> well, we're back on line,
we're back in the 21st century, i guess. >> and what is the situation there? how are folks dealing with it? it's a tiny island and bore the brunt of this storm. >> it's amazing how people do here. you know, everybody pitches in, everybody does something, they have got a plow on the truck they use it, if they have got a house that's warm they let the neighbors join them. you know, it does very well in a storm like this. this was a tough one, it was the worst i've seen in the ten years i lived here. >> i know you had to use the school as a shelter, the hospital lost power for a while. and i understand actually during the height of the storm there was a baby born. >> yes. actually i think there were four of them potentially going to be born. we were a little concerned about that because there's no way to get off island if something would have went wrong. >> and how are you doing today? now it's the cleanup begins, the sun comes out hopefully, you are able to assess the damage. are you getting what you need? how bad do you think this will
be? >> i think we're going to find a lot of damage on the erosion area on the east coast of the island and probably the south shore. down town i know we've got some structures that are having issues. the water was up to their foundations, so maybe even higher. our building commissioner is going to be down there at sun-up starting his inspection. food service establishments, grocery stores were without power for a long time, that's going to require the health department and those folks to make sure food is still safe. so we're not out of the woods yet but we're headed there. >> we're sending our best to you, chief, and all of the people of nantucket. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> we didn't have time to ask the chief to expun knowledge your record when you were 19 and a little incident. >> i wish you were kidding but you're not. it was not chief pittman who made the arrest. that's all behind us. let's turn the page, though, al. let's talk about some of the
forecasting. for the storm, obviously this storm took a turn no one predicted. >> we actually did see this in a sense coming, if you want, we actually said anywhere between 9 and 18 inches of snow. well, we ended up getting almost 10 inches at central park and 12 inches at laguardia airport. but, the bulk of it was on the island and as you moved up into new england. and the american model actually handled this better than the european model. so, nobody likes to be wrong, we didn't get three feet of snow in the city but i think we saw a lot of people make the right decision to shut things down and in fact, mayor de blasio is coming up to talk about it. >> what do you think of the meteorologists in the weather service apologizing? >> i think he felt a lot of pressure and nobody likes to be wrong, and i think he stepped up and said hey, we blew it. we're human and we're going to try to do better which we all feel in the weather business. >> thankfully many were safe in the storm.
>> that's the bottom line. >> obviously the airlines were scrambling now to deal with the backlog of canceled flights. more than 7700 over two days, tom costello back at laguardia airport. good morning. >> reporter: willie, the good news it's open. boston to philly, we've got 650 cancellations today alone, here at laguardia the cancellations are mostly on the departing flights, because the planes aren't here yet. system wide for the airlines this is really going to be a day of recovery. with the snow cleared out, the ramps and runways in new york back in business overnight. but inside the terminal, it was still dead quiet. cynthia spent the a second night on the cots anxious to get home to the bahamas. >> i doze off. don't sleep soundly by no stretch of the imagination. >> after a white-out as boston logan and digging out in the northeast the airlines say this morning they will be back in the air.

720,000 people ride the northeast corridor. guy, back to you. >> the bahamas sound pretty good right about now. thanks, tom. >> air travel, this is serious, a new round of threats against passenger planes under investigation. janet shanley is in los angeles and has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> savannah, 16 bomb threats against commercial planes in the last four days, and this is a new method of delivery authorities are having to deal with. all of them coming on twitter. this morning the fbi is investigating another round of online threats against airlines, all posted tuesday night. including one targeting delta flights. saying, the 4 planes will explode in 10 minutes. delta responded to the tweet, saying it considers all threats serious and planned to report the comments for further review and action. the now suspend accounts sent threats to delta, southwest and american airlines.
three of the targeted flights landed hours before the tweets were posted. two others landed shortly after, and another had yet to depart. all six arrived safely. it's just the latest in a series of online threats against airlines this week. five other flights made emergency landings over the weekend after similar threats were posted on twitter. two of the planes were headed to seattle. >> this is the first time i've been in a situation you had two aircraft fairly close in arrival time for them to be considered a security situation. >> another one of the threats prompted f-16 fighter jets to escort two planes to safety in atlanta. all those were later cleared of security concerns. and arrived safely at their destination. while security experts say the ip address of the twitter user can be tracked they do have to take each one of these seriously and respond accordingly. savannah, willie, back to you. >> thank you. >> the super bowl now four days away, a lot of the talk in
arizona and across the nation remains focused on deflategate. players speaking out about the scandal at media day yesterday. peter alexander has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. four days until the super bowl. i'm already hoors. the debate boils down to one thing. whether you believe that a locker room attendant could have intentionally deflated a dozen patriots footballs in 90 seconds or less in the least likely of places. the big es story in football may come down to a bathroom break. nbc sports is confirming that the nfl interviewed a patriots locker room attendant about deflategate. a source says footage captured that attendant taking both team footballs the in a private bathroom for about 90 seconds before bringing them onto the field. >> 90 seconds seems more than enough in a bag that zips open if you have the needle. it doesn't take much time to

flew the drone is a government intelligence worker who told investigators he had been drinking before testing out the device at 3:00 a.m. on monday. sources say the man who lives near the white house wanted to see if the device could fly in bad weather. he lost control of the drone and it crashed into a tree on the south grounds, that sparked a shutdown and predawn search by the secret service. an employee with the national geosfashl intelligence agency he turned himself in. in a statement the nga said the employee was off duty and is not involved in work-related to drones or unmanned aerial vehicles in any capacity. the secret service is continuing its investigation. so far no charges have been filed. the man is back at work, those close to him tell me he is visibly shaken. >> kristinen welker, thank you. dramatic video of fresno, california firefighters saving three young children from an apartment fire. this happened sunday, all caught by helmet cameras.
you can see the firefighters going into the dark smoke-filled apartment and pulling the kids out one by one. thank goodness they are still in critical condition however. a ups driver is fired for a delivery that was anything but special. a surveillance camera capturing this as the driver walks up to the gate, it was locked so he tossed the package over the fence. the package broke open and hundreds of dollars of ammunition and equipment was damaged. it gets worse. then the ups driver unzips his pants and what do you think, he relieves himself. after the homeowner complained ups says the seasonal driver was relieved of his duty. >> okay. all right. >> wow. i didn't see the relieving himself part coming. >> doesn't get better than that. >> double whammy from that guy. wow. >> good luck following that.

scene. at least one is expected in court later today. wildlife workers plan to release about 20 birds recently found with mysterious goo in san francisco bay. some 250 birds died from that same goo. investigators are trying to figure out what it is. volunteers did say more than 200 birds, many are still recovering at a facility in fair field. however, the good news no birds have been found with goo since last thursday. and meteorologist christina loren is here with us as the sun has come up over the bay area. what a beauty. >> yeah you know just seven minutes ago just to be specific. good morning to you. beautiful sunrise here over the san francisco bay. let me show you a couple more. a few clouds. the same sky over point reyes. gorgeous pinks and oranges this morning. temps are going to end up in the mid to upper 60s for today. we're beginning to continue to stay nice and mild all the way through sunday and then rain moves in as we get into monday.

on college campuses. two football players just convicted of rape. gape gutierrez has the story. >> this morning two university football players are in jail, bail revoked and lives changed forever. >> this case has given the community an opportunity to talk to each other and our children especially our boys about the way we treat women. >> after an emotional two-week trial, a jury took just three hours to convict brandon and cory of several counts of aggravated rape and battery. two others are awaiting trial and pleaded not guilty. they argued the young men were not guilty of rape but a college culture of binge drinking and sex led to the incident. >> i'm sorry. i never intended on hurting anyone. i was extremely intoxicated and i would like to extend a
personal apology. >> a 21-year-old student had been seen passed out drunk. video showed him carrying the woman to his dorm accompanied by teammates. according to prosecutors, he took pictures and video of the assault and shared it with friends. >> the conduct revealed was profoundly disturbing and utterly unacceptable. >> the conviction comes amid a renewed national conversation about campus sexuality assault and an article in rolling stone that alleged a gang rape at the university of virginia. the federal government is investigating dozens of schools for their handling of sexual violence case. >> i think this case is a wake up call for campuses to take rape seriously. >> they are convict and carry up to 25 years in prison. sentencing is set for early march. for today, gabe gutierrez, nbc
news. >> tiger woods is speaking out for the first time about questions surrounding his missing tooth. craig melvin is here with more on that story. >> i think it's safe to say there has never been a dental procedure so closely monitored. for the first time since last week we are hearing the story from the tiger's mouth. woods said he is mystified by all the dental drama. tiger woods is making his 2015 tour debut in arizona this week but it's his missing tooth that is getting all the attention. >> lindsey vonn in a class of her own. >> he was trying to surprise his girlfriend when he showed up at the world cup hiding behind the bandana. >> i had my mask on so no one knew who i was, trying to blend in. not a lot of brown dudes at ski races. okay? i was looking down and all the camera guys are below me on their knees or getting on the
ground and moving around trying to get a picture and the video camera was on his shoulder and he stood and up and turned and caught me in the mouth. >> sticking to his story despite the fact that the race organizers said no official reports were filed and there was no such incident. tiger said the cameraman chipped one tooth and cracked another, making for a bloody scene. >> i couldn't eat or drink until they put the temporaries on. i couldn't have anything touch it. even breathing hurt. >> after the race vonn told us that the visit was a total surprise making no mention of his tooth. >> i didn't know he was here until i was done with my race and i would not have expected him to show up. he's a catch. he's a good boyfriend. >> she later posted this photo showing a tight lipped tiger
echoing his account of the missing tooth. >> i feel terrible that his tooth got knocked out though. a cameraman accidentally knocked into him and took out his tooth. he didn't complain once or ask for special assistance or security. tiger for one wants to get back to the green. >> it's a new world. we need to talk about something. >> we reached out to the community who organized the event. we heard back from them and they said they cannot say that woods is lying, but they are baffled by reports of there being reports of blood everywhere and no one approached the medical staff for help. >> he said he was in so much pain that's painful. >> again, he said the 16 itself was very bloody and you would think someone saw this. >> maybe the cameraman might come forward. >> i wish we could devote more time and resources to this

>> this beautiful place exists because of it. >> this year it was on the ground. >> predicting sinkholes is a challenge. they ventured less than a mile into the aquifer in uncharted hidden river. a scientist pinpointed his exact location. it was 280 feet below a four-lane highway. all the makings for another sink hole. >> it's like a trap door. >> it is also a time capsule because they found amazing fossils. this is a fossil from a mast don that maybe 700,000 years old and even on our dive we found these, including what to me looks like a tooth. i have seen and covered a lot of

second bathroom break taken by a patriots locker room attendant before the afc championship game. nfl sources say the attendant is seen on video carrying game balls from both teams after they were certified by the officials. a new study is looking for answer as to why girls are starting puberty earlier than they did a decade ago. with that early start comes early enstrags. and early thaefdz sugary drinks might be a contributing factor. we're here to walk throughout results. so this is a harvard sturdy. they concluded that one sugary drink a day could be linked to early periods in girls early as in 2.7 months or so earlier. >> right. yes. natalie. and that 2.7 months is important because clinically that may not be that meaningful. so you get it two or three months earlier. what they're saying is on a larger scale of population level, epidemiologically could this have an impact? what they're suggesting and what ut study found was that there
was a higher incidents or an earlier period in girls that had the sugary drinks but not related to their bmi. we always think it's related to obesity. we're suggesting that the sugary drinks cause a spike in insulin which can start periods earlier. >> interesting. we should point out that american beverage association released a statement, neither the study nort body of science shows that sugar sweetened beverage consumption shows early on set of menarche. what is the advice as a doctor? >> i think this is more evidence that you are to limit the sugary drinks in children. we know that it's bad for obesity and teeth. it could be changing your body metabolically that could have long term consequences. important that we know that early periods are associated perhaps with an increased risk of breast cancer. that's why the study is so important. >> thank you so much. >> all right. now to a high speed chase with a twist. take a look at this video from a police cruiser's dashboard camera nearby pittsburgh.

>> your goal i guess was 15 pounds. >> yeah. >> how much did you lose over the month? >> i just weighed myself. i lost 12 pounds. a few pounds short, but i will take it. >> how does that sound? >> so 12 pounds is fantastic mainly because we put a lot of muscle on jeff. muscle weighs more than fat. >> i'm not sure you can tell but i'm one big muscle. >> you're ripped. >> we call him arnold now. he is down a notch in his belt. it's now you feel looking in the mirror and walking around. he feels great. and he wants to keep happy. >> i know some people set that weight goal as the standard. if you don't quite get where you want it to be what should you be looking at otherwise. >> you should be focused on weight necessarily. again, you're putting on muscle. it's a big process. it weighs a lot more. focus how your clothes fit, what the next step is, on changing your routine up. he was frustrated in the

8:26. i'm kris sanchez. happening now, the launch of new metering lights for one of the sauth bay's busiest traffic corridors. 85 between mountain view and cupertino. those lights switched on for the first time this morning. they have been on, but they turned red. they will return longer than any of the metering lights in the bay area. that's from 6:00 in the morning until 11:00 in the morning. they were launched last week for the southbound evening commute. this is to help provide some relief for one of the worst bottlenecks anywhere in the bay area. let's check with the man who knows a thing or two about bottlenecks. mike. >> it's very tough down there.

joining us is bill deblasio. >> good morning, everyone. we end up with a foot of snow give or take instead of two or more. you made these decisions to shut things down. do you regret that and feel good about that? there has been a lot of controversy. >> always controversy. i listen to the weather man. i think the message was clear from the whole community for today. two or three feet. 20 or 30 miles east of new york city, they got twice as much. it was this close and it was the right thing to do to take precautions. >> how difficult is that? you are balancing keeping people safe which is the most paramount, but it's an economic hit. >> you can't put a price on safety. when we heart two feet or more that's one of the top two or storms in the history of the
city. better safe than sorry. get ahead of it and by clearing the roads and having the travel ban, it allowed the sanitation department and all of the first responders to do their work without interference. had we had the real thing, that would have been necessary. >> as the mayor of the city of new york you have to deal with a lot of agencies. the state and the state of new jersey and different places. you had the governor shutting down the subway system at the last minute. what have you learned out of this in working with the different agencies? >> you do your best to coordinate and generally people are on the same page. there will always be challenges. everyone agreed this was the kind of storm if it had been as bad as projected, it was not business as usual. we had to go the extra mile. that was the bottom line. >> is it true that the governor shut down the subways without telling you first?

>> always the way to go. i think we need a daily dip. >> i agree with that. >> that's a good idea. >> the daily dip. >> i like it. let's talk about some of the stories making news as we enjoy our dips. did you hear about the twitter airline thing going on? the fbi is looking into this. more than a dozen online threats made against passenger planes just this week posted last night targeting delta, southwest and american airlines. one of the threats, for example, to delta just said the four planes will explode in ten minutes. delta said it considers all threats serious. and it plans to report the comments for further review and action. one of the week's threats prompted f-16 fighter jets to escort a couple planes to safety in atlanta. there's no confirmation of any of these threats, but we're hearing they're related, but it's a scary thing when anybody can get on twitter, facebook or whatever and say i'm coming for this plane at this time and they've got to divert them. >> and the twitter accounts they were suspended and, of course, officials are

>> doctors around the country are scrambling to find out what is causing a mystery that leaves kids paralyzed. >> it started with the enterovirus outbreak as doctors struggle to find answers and help her daughter. 7-year-old mckenzie likes to break dance, swim, and do crafts. just before christmas, she got what her parents thought was a common cold. within 12 days, she was paralyzed from the neck down. >> she got a cold and now she is never going to walk again. how do you get your mind around that? it's hard to understand. >> doctors have diagnosed her with acute flasit pilitis preventing the brain from sending signals to the body. they know the condition, but not what causes it.

for now this is our reality. >> the center is urging doctors to be vigilant in reporting new cases. here with more on what you need to know, doctor, good morning. what's going on here? we talked about a fm in some of the cases and not all being related to enterovirus. is there a connection? >> that's what they are trying to figure out. we had a rise in this virus. it is not a new virus, but it caused severe respiratory illnesses and this illness that was not new. we have clusters of that and clusters of this and maybe they are related. what's important is even though the kids might be testing positive for the d 68 and the respiratory secretions, they haven't done able to demonstrate
in the spinal fluid and that's what they need to say definitively it's a cause. an example would be polio which is an enterovirus and we can demonstrate the virus so we know it's the causative agent. >> what are are the symptoms? >> by definition it's a pair lytic symptom and experience weakness in a limb. the thing that makes it peculiar is it doesn't follow a pattern that we have seen in other illnesses. some kids like this poor child has it in the neck down and some experience one leg or facial muscle weakness. it can vary. as the segment pointed out we don't have any tried and true therapies. we can't treat it if we don't know what's causing it. we don't know a direct cause or the patient's immune response to the virus that is triggering this inflammation. there a few i had spoth seize
out there. >> anything preventive we have been doing? the answer unfortunately is no. it's probably some virus. we go back to what we say about infection control and that comprises hand washing and sanitizing and not touching your hand to your face, etc. we don't know what causes it so you have a virus and you can't do anything to prevent this. >> some of the patients have shown signs of improvement right? >> some of them have been treated with various therapies we used to treat these acute neurological syndromes and what they think the best intervention is rehab and therapy. everyone is on it. the cdc i implore you to report it to the cdc. the only way to identify the pathogen and get a treatment is

since you like to cook, once the squash is soft, i do this. add the parmesan cheese which is one of the five ingredients and create like a creamy texture. it falls apart nicely and creates an orangey sauce without adding cream to it. >> when do you combine it? >> as the pasta is cook this just takes 15 minutes to make dinner. >> you add the pasta in there. start tossing. i add arugula. i like my greens with my pasta. it's peppery and you don't have to if you don't want to. you toss it together. finish with parmesan cheese. >> that's beautiful. >> for meat lovers, this is all it. this is a flat iron steak that is seasoned with a little salt and a nice hot pan. that's the most important thing

nice word to start with, with your story. so, explain how it went from being a bridesmaid to suddenly hiring yourself out to other girls who are looking for a bridesmaid? >> sure. i was a bridesmaid so many time for my own friends, i was nicknamed the professional bridesmaid. when i was behind the scenes at weddings, i noticed there was nobody there truly for the bride. there was a gap in the wedding industry, and i decided to fill the courage. >> off wedding planner who plans all the other stuff, and then the bride's kind of left to the her your own. you have your maid of honor. >> if you're lucky now have have braids maid and a maid of honor, they're getting themselves ready. they need to be a good friend to you. but let me handle the dirty work the stress, the personal tasks here and there that come up unexpectedly so everyone else can have fun. >> i have to think my wedding, my sister was my maid of honor she had to do things that not everybody would want to do. so do you ever feel sad for the people? thinking they don't have somebody close enough to be
willing to sacrifice some of their own needs? >> i would say quite the opposite i feel excited for them that they have good friends in their life, and i'm going to step in and make sure the wedding party has everything they need. i also help out the maid of honor and the bridesmaid so they can focus on having fun as well and support their best friend or sister. >> when the bride introduced you to her braids maid, it must be strange, hey, you've never met but she's a bridesmaid and the rest of the girls, elementary school. >> at first everyone is like who is she, why is jen here? then when the chaos starts happening and i'm stepping in and helping everyone out, they're like thank god you're here. and i am doing a lot of work for the bridesmaids as well. >> brides can be a little bit bridezilla, i had my moments, moments, one time. what have you witnessinged? have you had any terrible experiences? >> you can't blame a bride for going bridezilla. it's an emotional and stressful
times. i have had brides screaming and crying before they walk down the aisle. i've had brides be unsure if they want to walk down the aisle. all of the crazy situations happen, and that is what i'm mainly there to deal with. >> it is one of the most important days of your life and one of the most intimate days of your life. and the people with you moments before you walk down the aisle i mean, just to echo what jen said it's like you want your nearest and dearest i can't imagine in that moment saying hey jen what's your last name. you want someone who knows you through and through. >> sure. i actually work with my brides up to a year and a half before their wedding. so we're not truly strangers before i arrive on the wedding day. and because i am that outsider, they do rely on you and tell you more things than they might tell your friends because off third party, you're unbiassed and you're going to come with a brand new perspective. >> run through what you do and i know off bridal survival guide. >> do you keep it it in the fanny pack. >> i do i carry this. it's a bridesmaid survival kit.
