the shocking video of a police officer forcibly arresting a student in a south carolina classroom. the justice department and the fbi have opened investigations into the incident and we're now hearing from a second student arrested. nbc's gain gutierrez has the latest. >> reporter: it is 10:30 monday morning. math class at spring valley high school. school resource officer ben fields is called in to confront a student. witnesses say she had not been participating in class, had taken out her phone and refused to leave when the teacher asked. the confrontation escalates while other students watch silently. while she's still sitting in her desk fields pulls her to the ground and throws her across the floor. >> it wasn't right. he was like slinging her around like a rag doll. >> nadia said she stood up for her classmate and was also arrested. >> the grown men in there were

scared. i was scared. he's known as officer slam. i was eighth grade hearing about this man. >> social media trending under the #assault at spring valley high. >> i think it's ridiculous. not even necessary do that to her when she's just a child sitting in the seat. >> the girl tried to punch fields at least once but he probably should have responded differently. >> what should a o resource officer do? >> one of the first things we would like to to see happen is the school handle it, not involve us as the law enforcement officer. >> a -- 2013 incident claiming in part fields infairley and recklessly targets african american students. he's also a football coach and had received a culture of excellence award at the school last year. >> he's a really good officer. and sometimes he can be like

>> reporter: finally preparations are under way here in the media spin room a also on the main stage where the debate will take place later this afternoon. for the first time donald trump is not in the lead edged out by ben carson, who like trump is a political novice. donald trump in iowa on the eve of the debate as a cbs norktsd poll shows him losing the lead to ben carson. >> get a little shake up in iowa. i don't know what's going on. >> in the polls, 26% of republican primary voters said they would back carson. four points ahead of trump with the rest of the candidates far behind in the single digits. moderator john harwood says could impact the debate's tone. >> when carson pulled ahead of trump in iowa in polling there, donald trump really started going after ben carson. so this is really only one national survey showing this. but it does introduce an ununpredictable dynamic to the

stage. >> carson staffers say he'll defend himself but remain low key. >> some people think he's laid back. i don't think there are very many who think he's too laid back to be president. i think people really appreciate his temperament. >> here in boulder, as in much of the country many are undecided. >> someone intelligent, successful in business, not a career politician. >> with much of the attention on front runners, the other candidates hope their performances will swing the votes their way. including jeb bush. now cutting staff and struggling to find footing in the race. and toot another round in the lodge nominating process. >> the debate is scheduled to last two hours including commercial. cnbc agreed to shorten the session at the request of some of the candidates. >> and remember you can watch the gop debate tonight on cnbc, coverage begins at 5:00 p.m.

eastern. today the house votes on the budget deal. boehner calls it the best possible deal at this moment. many republicans are not happy with it. tracie potts is live in washington d.c. with the latest. good morning tracie. did speaker boehner hand president obama a win here? >> some republicans certainly think so. and that is why they are very skeptical about going along with what they consider a rushed, back room deal. paul ryan is one of them. he's expected to be named house speaker tomorrow. and he says this deal stinks. that is the way he put it. boehner says he agrees but it is the best they can do and they really don't want to drag this into a new republican administration, new republican leadership here on capitol hill. bottom line he's trying to get it done quickly, hoping for a vote to get approved by the house. all though even if that happened there is already opposition in the senate including from the

campaign trail. some of the senators out in colorado for the debate, ted cruz says it is utter surrender. rubio says it is seriously flawed. and the rand paul already promising a filibuster. >> tracie thank you so much. now the kansas city royals beat the mets in a marathon 5 hour and 9 min game one. the royals escobar started the game off with a bang. hitting an inside park home run on the first pitch of the first inning giving the royals an early lead. the mets up 4-3 in the ninth when the royals alex gordon tide it with a homer to center field sending the game to extra innings. and in the bottom of the 14th, this sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for the winning run. the game was temporarily suspended in the fourthic that have fox's production truck lost
