it out. >> let's start with our top story. this is a deadly and overnight end to a man hunt for a dangerous fugitive. the suspect on the run for nearly a week after he allegedly shot a police officer. he was killed in the shoot out in kentucky. nbcs gabe guiterrez has that story. >> reporter: good morning, matt. he was armed and dangerous. they found him overnight. he had a gun and a shoot out with no officers hurt. a community is breathing a sigh of relief. this morning the man hunt for 62-year-old floyd cook is over. >> about 12:21 a.m. this morning, officers called into post 15 in columbia saying shots had been fired. >> shooting and killing the rapist and robber overnight. >> he did have a gun and shots were exchanged and cook's same

wounds led to the county corn nor -- coroner pronounced him dead at the scene. >> cook opened fire on an officer during a traffic stop near the tennessee, kentucky border. the officer survived. his bullet proof vest saved him. cook managed to escape. that same night he got into a shoot out with a kentucky state trooper before disappearing again this time on foot. the fbi and u.s. marshalls joined the search and the school district was shut down for three days. >> it's hard for us to see one person could terrorize a community that much. >> he approached a home in the burksville area and asked for a ride. residents contacted police but he ran in the woods. they set up a perimeter tracking cook with k-9 units, night vision. two associates were arrested

>> ryan is taking over for john boehner. he secured pledges of support for house conservatives. he was confirmed by a wide margin but nine republicans did vote against him. >> this morning, i want to tell you about two incidents involving passenger planes. the first heading from los angeles to philadelphia. that flight had to be diverted to phoenix overnight because of an unruly passenger. >> good morning. police say the passenger is not under arrest but he is getting psychiatric care after refusing to take his seat and make comments about the government and september 11th attacks. it was a midair scare for passengers headed from los angeles to philadelphia thursday. a passenger can be seen being removed from the plane after his behavior forced the crew to make an emergency landing in phoenix.

the man walked to first class where he stood at attention in military style refusing to take his seat. >> he was angry swearing and talking about the government whose after him and he's mad at the government and has plans. >> police say the passenger was making comments about the september 11th attacks. >> it gave the indication this person may have been suffering from some type of mental illness. >> he says he hand two other passengers subdued the man until he jumped out of his seat again this time talking to passengers in coach. they finally managed to corral the man fastening him into a seat. >> when he saw the overwhelming force of these guys closing in on him he said okay and set down. >> he was removed from the plane

and transit po-- transported to psychiatric unit. >> a scary one. thank you, matt. in florida investigators are beginning to piece together what caused a boeing 757 to catch fire. dozens of passengers were evacuated using emergency slides. carrie sanders is at the airport this morning. carrie, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. overnight the jet was towed to the other side of the airport. that's where accident reconstruction engineers are right now examining the plane. the early part of their investigation is on a fuel line that may have been leaking. >> after escaping flames in what some thought might be deaf, this morning, the 90 passengers from dynamic air flight 405 have a new challenge, finding the courage to climb on board another flight to their original

destination, venic destination, those fears may be well founded after the chaos on the charter airline thursday afternoon. just moments after fupulling aw from the gate leaking fuel on the left side of the plane ignited. as the plane was still moving, passengers scrambled to evacuate. >> i turned around and looked into the window and flames. >> officials say within just six minutes 101 passengers and crew escaped to the tarmac. 21 rushed to a nearby hospital. a 62-year-old man admitted into intensive care with a serious head injury. dynamic based in greensboro, north carolina is a charter air like with a fleet of five jets. >> right here we're down to four.

there's a lot of fuel and it smells strong. >> one focus this morning, did the pilot do a walk around? a visual inspection of the belly of the plane and the engines. >> if there's a fuel leak out of the ordinary, there are procedures in place to make sure that the fuel leaks are handled appropriately. >> dynamic air executives are here working with the national transportation safety board, they're 767 is 30 years old. by plane standards, that is not particularly old. while there are still two people in the hospital this morning, most here at the airport say this is a remarkably happy ending. savannah. >> carrie sanders, thank you so much. crews are taking a new approach to deflate that run away army surveillance balloon that crash landed in the pennsylvania forest. it broke away wednesday and drifted more than 120 miles. now pennsylvania state police

are using gun fire firing more than 100 shots at the wreckage to help release that helium so the balloon can be retrieved for investigators. >> for the first time now we're hearing from a young boy who survived a shark attack early this week and video has now surfaced. >> a body boarder with a go pro captured the attack from a distance. bobbing in the waves when a shark appears to lung out of water taking the boy under. >> i was on a boogie board and it popped out of the water and bit my leg. >> the fourth grader described wednesday's attack. >> one bite. it jumped out and grabbed me. i kicked it with this leg and then i kicked him in the nose and then i didn't panic after that. >> body surfing in the warm

waters 607 yards off the shores ramon was seriously injured bitten on his right leg and thigh. on the crowded beach first responders rushed him to the hospital. his mother there among the witnesses. >> he was strong. i was hysterical. he wasn't. he was telling me mom, i'm going to be okay. >> with warning signs now dotting the beach, ramon is in no rush to get back in the water. this morning this brave 1 10-year-old is back on his feet. >> we are getting a frightening new look at the thuj biker brawl in waco, texas that left nine dead and 175 under arrest. now video has been leaked to the media and shows bikers reacting to the gun fire in the parking lot. some of them taking cover while others are seen pulling out their own guns. >> police say the clash was part of an on going texas turf war.

highs reaching into the upper 70s and 81 degrees for the south. winds will be breezy, too, as we go into the afternoon. wet weather tomorrow. state. it's re-igniting the debate over religion in school. a seattle area football coach has been sidelined for praying on the field. this is a decision that is dividing a community. nbc's joe fryer has the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the school district says a coach cannot lead players in prayer calling that an overt public religious display. the coach was placed on paid administrative leave but he was allowed to attend last night's game. with the bremerton knights took the field the assistant coach was benched. joe kennedy watched but in a way he was the one with fans. >> i'm just a guy. who happens to believe in god and praise. >> kennedy was put on leave for

praying on the 50 yard line after games, something he has done for years often joined by players. >> he says if you want to be in here join me. if not, that's your decision. i'm not going to force you to be in here. it's your total decision. >> reporter: but when the school district learned about the prayers last month it ordered kennedy to stop, citing supreme court cases the district says students can pray on their own but it is a constitutional violation of students' rights for a district employee acting as such to initiate prayers with students. >> the warriors competed for the past 48 minutes. >> reporter: the coach abided at first, with a motivational speech. but this month he resumed praying after attorneys from a religious legal group told him it's okay as long as he's not coercing students. >> he quietly expressed his personal faith in prayer and they voluntarily decided to join him. there is no constitutional violation there. >> reporter: the school system

disagreed putting him on leave, a move applauded by some parents. >> as a parent i'm an employee here, a taxpayer, and it's just not okay to use public funds and public resources to showboat your own personal opinion. >> reporter: the connection between sports and prayer runs deep from the pros to high school games, private and public. >> doing it for 22 years, i got to think that 99.9% of the teams have come to the center of the field afterwards. >> reporter: back in bremerton after the knights pulled off a victory in the final moments coach kennedy once again led a prayer, not on the 50 yard line but in the bleachers, not as a coach but as a fan. the school district says it is offered kennedy a private location to pray that does not interfere with his duties but he has declined, kennedy's attorneys say that the school district simply hasn't done enough. they plan to take this to the

others, however, will call it a significant change. first of all, it involves sending a small number of americans special operations forces into syria. that means american boots on the ground in syria working with local partners. in the past the u.s. has only been advising and assisting from afar mostly through air strikes. more fighter jets will be sent here to turkey conducting more air strikes against isis. a-10s are already here and a-15s are on the way. action will be placed in northern iraq to assist this campaign against isis. when you look at it altogether,

there are three significant announcements, all of them involve deeper u.s. military engagement on the war on isis. >> thank you for that. stand by there. >> let's go to nbc's nick. what are they saying at the pentagon? >> matt, after more than a year of yearly 8,000 air strikes against enemy forces in both iraq and syria, the best that senior military officials can say is that the fight there against isis is at a stalemate. the overall plan is just not working. training and equipping iraqi forces, syria rebels has not proven to be a breaking point. they need a game changer. they're going to be far more aggressive in terms of the special forces operations on the ground. military officials will tell you you cannot win a war with air strikes alone. you need some boots on the ground. the white house says these are

not boots on the ground, this is not a change but in fact, it is a change for a more aggressive strategy and effort to defeat and destroy isis which afterall is president obama's goal. >> before you go, i want to go over these numbers again. richard angle is saying not to exceed 100. these are special operations forces, will they be fighting alongside serian rebel groups? >> that is still unclear. they will indeed be fighting along with kurds as they did in iraq just a little more than a week ago in which the army maeser sergeant was killed. not clear they will be fighting side by side with the serian rebel groups. there's still a lot of gray area and doubts about exactly who you may be fighting with when you're on the ground in syria unless, of course, it's the serian kurds. >> all right, thank you. >> let's go to the white house now.

kristin welker is live there. this president has not wanted to be more involved in these conflicts finds himself once again sending more troops into these dangerous areas. >> reporter: and that is the key point here. the white house trying to down play this announcement. we do not anticipate we'll hear from president obama about this. his press secretary will address the media at 12:30 today. this is a shift in policy for a president who wanted to ramp down the wars in iraq and afghanistan and were called just a few weeks ago president obama said he was going to leave a larger troop presence in afghanistan and now for the first time troops in syria. we'll hear more. we're announcing the white house plans say there's going to be an enhancement and shift in

she's also going to be performing a one-night only concert at radio city music hall just a block from us here on tuesday, november 17th. for more on how to get tickets to that, just head to today.com. >> i think i played that song 2 million times just personally. >> i love it. by the way, you'll be able to see that concert on december 14th recording it for nbc. let's take a look at headlines on this friday morning. a fugitive accused of shooting a police officer in tennessee triggered a massive manhunt, he has been killed now in a shootout with police in kentucky. 62-year-old floyd cook had been on the run since saturday. also, a prominent iranian-american businessman is reportedly being held by authorities in iran. siamak namazi was detained while visiting his parents. the u.s. state department is looking into those reports of the arrest. and ntsb investigators are trying to figure out what sparked that engine fire on a crowded plane at an airport in ft. lauderdale, florida.

it happened as the flight was getting ready to take off. everyone on board was quickly able to evacuate, but one passenger was injured running away from the plane. we want to begin this half hour with a one-year prison sentence for owen labrie, the former prep school student, convicted of sexually assaulting an underage classmate. this morning we're hearing from his victim's mother exclusively. natalie had a chance to sit down and talk to her. natalie. >> that's right. guys, this is the first time she's speaking out, and she had a lot to say about what happened to her daughter and the trial that has consumed their lives for more than a year. >> guilty. >> the dramatic trial brought national attention to an elite prep school and a hidden sexual practice that's been part of the school's culture for years. speaking out exclusively for the first time the mother of the victim told me her daughter never once regretted speaking up. >> it's been excruciating for her, but she just wanted to do what was right. >> reporter: in a tense courtroom owen labrie made one more quiet appeal waiting for the judge to pronounce the sentence.

the judge already knew his decision. >> you are sentenced to the house of corrections for a period of 12 months. >> reporter: one year followed by probation, pending an appeal, a suspended sentence for the felony of using at computer to lure a minor and labrie has to register as a sex offender. >> this was a sexual conquest. >> reporter: each side made its final appeal to the judge. an impassioned videotaped statement from the victim. we're concealing her identity. >> what he did to me made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet and that i would be better off dead than having to deal with the terrible things that every day were thrown in my direction after doing the right thing. >> reporter: labrie's defense counsel. >> the punishment that owen labrie has suffered to date is the enormous for him. he's now known by so many people

as the st. paul rapist even though the jury rejected that moniker. >> reporter: trial revealed a ritual at the st. paul's school known at senior salute. seniors ask out freshmen sometimes for sex. >> did she not have an idea of really was going to happen? >> her experience was extremely limited with young men and certainly zero with an 18-year-old man. i know she regrets going. >> reporter: they thought the prestigious prep school was a dream come true. >> we were an ex-pat family that we're always searching for community. sorry. we just thought we'd found it. >> reporter: in a written statement from st. paul's, we remain committed to teaching our students our core values, that they live honorably, respectfully and never forget to

be kind. labrie was accepted to harvard hoping to study at the divinity school. a friend says his faith has kept him going. how does he go on from here? >> he's never even through this whole process once spoken to me about the fact that he thinks his life is ruined or over. he's going to go on to do great things. >> reporter: your daughter wanted you to read a statement to us. >> yes. going through this legal process i now understand why victims feel as if they can't speak up. yet i cannot see how i would have lived day-to-day life without telling the truth. >> now, owen labrie was also sentenced up to to seven years on the felony conviction of using a computer to lure a minor, but the judge suspended that sentence during this appeals process which starts now. meanwhile, he had to register as a sex offender as of yesterday. >> we'll have much more on this case, including more of that exclusive interview with the victim's mother that. happens on "dateline" tonight at

new study that says perhaps it makes the flu shot less effective. >> which is exactly the population that we don't want to see that in, right? if you think about how many people over the age of 65 or 75 take statins, it's same vulnerable group who get the flu shot. why am i saying vulnerable? number one, we see a rise in flu in elderly patients, number one, and number two there's an age-related decline in your immunity as you get older so now we have two studies that are hypothesis-generating. not definitively saying they do reduce the effect i wasness but it's raised the possibility that it can reduce the response to the vaccine which could translate into more respiratory illness. >> this puts people in a pickle. you mentioned if you're older you're more susceptible to flu, more likely to die of the flu and if you're on statins the flu hot is not effective, what am i supposed to do? >> a really important bottom line. given the fact this is the first study that has even looked at this the there's absolutely no formal recommendation that if you are take aggrastatin you

should forgo the flu shot, and if you are planning on getting the flu shot that you should stop the statin, nobody is saying that. >> there's a high-dose flu shot. >> and this is incredibly important, approved last year there's a high-dose flu vaccine which is roughly four times as strong as standard dose. it is recommended for all people over the age of 65. it does boost the response to the vaccine and also has a modest effect on efficacy. next topic. >> yes. >> there was a study that read essentially as i read it low-fat diets don't really work. >> not the headline, not a good headline. >> what are we supposed to take from this. >> this was interesting, actually what we call a meta analysis over 63 randomized controlled trials on all these different dietary interventions. headline red low-fat diets don't work to lose weight. that's not exactly true. the real find some things that low carb diets edged out low-fat diets in terms of weight loss,

repairs to a large union city sink w and good friday morning it's 7:56. i'm sam brock. turns out repairs to a large union city sinkhole will tibfor quite while. no trick or treat here. at this point those. that sinkhole opened more than two weeks ago near fair ranch road. sprang from a ruptured water main running right near a sewer line. repairs have been very difficult. so the intersection is open, again, but one lane in each direction will remain closed until all of that work is finished. also, happening today, a new gauge on california's water usage. state water board is going to release updated conservation numbers. the agency already says it appears californians have met target for a fourth straight month. positive news there. governor brown has mandated all californians use 25% less water while officials remind everyone to stay the course and keep conserving, even if an el nino weather pattern appears to be on
