a lot of people ready to kick 2016 to the curb. >> absolutely. and we did hear a little bit about that before. we have one hour until the fireworks and we ring in the new year. the crowds starting to fill up the embarcadero. what you see behind me is the median and on the other side people are lined up all the way to the water front. now san francisco police out here they are doing their best to keep everyone safe. >> happy new year. >> reporter: the party started early with crowds arriving at the embarcadero in san francisco. >> a lot of energy. we love it. just amazing. >> reporter: some say the ups and downs and political changes of 2016 were on their minds. >> 2017, hopefully thinks will turn around. >> a few president. happy with them. >> reporter: san francisco police officers were visible with stepped up security for the
celebration. aware of the situation in istanbul but said there were no specific threats here. >> we have a slew of people working from sfpd to keep the crowds safe and to be the eyes and ears to see if they see anything suspicious. >> reporter: they are looking for open containers on the streets and public drunkenness. families lined the fence hoping to get a great spot as fireworks light up the sky at midnight. >> my hope is good health, steady work, and peace. >> i like it. it's fun. >> reporter: and we're here live and i want to show you we have an opposite angle here. there are buildings and the parking lot and people are lined up wherever they can. they are waiting to see the fireworks as well. so folks out here are excited and ready to ring in 2017. bring a jacket. it is awfully cold out here. reporting live in san francisco,
christie smith, nbc bay area news. and a live look along the embarcadero right now, a nice looking night for the fireworks show. rob mayeda is standing by. this could be a perfect night for fireworks but it is cold out there. >> that's the one thing. the skies cleared out and it is chilly. but good crowds and good visibility for folks around the bay. we have mostly clear conditions and chilly temperatures. mid-40s tonight. the average low this time of year is 45 degrees. downtown san jose, a good crowd around downtown there at the park. the temperatures will be running through the low 40s but dry in the south bay as well. new year's day, interesting weather. snow showers around seattle and portland and that is the storm we're watching that will be arriving this time tomorrow night and you see the snow in puget sound that is the system that will drop through the north
bay tomorrow this time which could bring snow to the higher hills of sonoma county and napa county as the cold air starts the new year and possibly big rain and snow in the first few days of 2017. we'll have a look at that in the forecast coming up. >> thank you so much. to keep people from drinking and driving on new year's eve many transit agencies are running special schedules. samtrans are offering free service from 8:00 tonight all the way through tomorrow morning at about 5:00 a.m. california train rides free tonight. they will start running on a special schedule as well into the wee hours of the morning about 2:00 a.m. b.a.r.t rides are not free but they will be running extra trains from 8:00 tonight until 3:00 in the morning. b.a.r.t will have extra trains standing by after the fireworks
show tonight. those who went to the embarcadero will have extra assistance getting home. >> stay with nbc bay area. carson daly is hosting our new year's party from times square. that show starts at 11:30 tonight right after this newscast. and now to a developing story. a huge new year's eve celebration overseas turns into deadly chaos. dozens of people are dead tonight after an attack at turkish nightclub. it is an active scene right now unfolding in istanbul. the latest information confirms that 39 people have been killed. dozens more are wounded. several killed are foreigners. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack which is the fourth in turkey in less than a month. a chaotic scene as ambulances
rushed to take dozens of wounded to the hospital. there may have been as many as 500 people inside the club many of them trying to escape the hail of gunfire. it happened shortly after 1:00 in the morning. the police are still combing through the scene of the crime. the governor of istanbul is now saying this will be investigated as a terrorist attack. it's just the latest violence in what has been an especially deadly year in turkey. in 2016 more than 180 people have been killed in a series of attacks. some are saying today's violence is reminiscent of the paris terror attacks at the bataclan theater 2015. security had been tight in turkey this year with police barring traffic leading to key squares in istanbul. >> the white house issued a statement condemning the violence as president obama was briefed about the attack. remember you can always track a breaking news across our digital
platforms on www.nbcbayarea.com. investigators are trying to track down a serial arsonist suspected of setting two dozen fires off highway 101 in recent weeks. the latest started at 1:00 this morning. the flames quickly spread from a palm tree to a nearby shed. the firefighters said they just finished putting out a fire a half mile away when they were called to this fire. investigators are asking for the public's help in catching the arsonist. we turn to continuing coverage now of the russian hacking scandal. members of the san francisco russian consulate are on board airplanes returning to russia. the obama administration kicked out 35 russian officials after uncovering evidence that russia tried to influence the presidential election. also happening more questions surrounding the discovery of malware on a vermont electricity
company's laptop. this was after a warning about potential harmful computer code from russian hackers. it is not clear how the code got on that computer in vermont. and the sanctions against russia did put a bit of a damper on the new year's celebration at the russian center of san francisco. many reflected on the recent controversies over the sanctions but the mood is still optimistic. >> they are great people and it's sad and hopefully in the coming year with the new president-elect that will change. so that's what i'm hoping and we can bring them back. >> everything will be okay. >> reporter: the san francisco russian center was founded in 1939 by russian immigrants as a way to preserve their culture here in california. still ahead, president-elect donald trump reveals his new year's resolution for 2017.

people gathered for a die-in against president elect many chose to celebrate on new year's eve. others deciding to protest. people gathered for a die in against president-elect donald trump tonight. this is part of a nationwide series of protests tonight. president-elect donald trump says his new year's resolution is to make america great again. mr. trump and his family are celebrating at his mar-a-lago mansion in palm beach tonight at a lavish black tie party. sylvester stallone and quincy jones are among the celebrities in attendance. mr. trump spoke about his plans for the evening on the way into the party. >> we just want to have a great evening and we look forward to getting to work on monday and being back. we're having some great success right here. we're taking a lot of great people to run the government. >> earlier today mr. trump raised eyebrows with a tweet that says happy new year to all
including my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly and don't know what to do. love. the presidential election was perhaps the biggest national story and international story of 2016. let's take a look at some of the biggest local stories in no particular order. it has only been a few weeks since the tragedy at the ghost ship warehouse where 36 people died when a fire ripped through the building where people had gathered for a party. so many were artists making the fire especially tragic. the investigation continues. no cause has been determined. >> we just had an election. and sort of like you have to be given a little time. >> those who opposed the president-elect did not give him a little time to soothe their concerns following the election. the reaction was swift and dramatic with thousands
demonstrating for days. if you remember in june there was a precursor to that outrage when trump spoke in san jose and thousands showed up to protest the supporters. the sentencing of a former stanford swimmer took the world by storm. he spent three months in jail for the crime. millioned called for judge to resign. the raiders turned in a season for the ages. really thrilling dedicated fans. the raiders made the playoffs for first time since 2002. derek carr leading a strong core of players. carr broke his leg last week putting a damper on the season as the team heads to the playoffs. the raiders and 49ers switching places. so far the team has only won two games. the season's biggest story line,
colin kaepernick's decision to kneel for the national anthem in response to deadly police shootings across the country. they do it right in dubai looking at new year's celebration in dubai. you can see it in anywhere. this is the tallest building in the world. it made for a spectacular display. tens of thousands of fireworks and people that gathered in the city to watch. and happy new year from hong kong, a traditional fireworks display there. china is one of the first countries to ring in the new year. earlier than that, a million people counted down in sydney, australia one of my favorites here to see the lights over the city harbor bridge. all eyes there on the fireworks
over they chronic bridge and the opera house. we always watch that as it rolls out to different places. i love sydney it is a beautiful way do it. here is going to be beautiful but chilly. >> visibility is going to be great but cold temperatures outside. a few spots already in the mid-30s outside as we show you a view out around san francisco. free of fog right now, clear skies, temperatures in the mid-40s. san jose you have a good crowd in downtown but it is kind of chilly around the south bay. saratoga and willow glen, in the mid-30s. close to 41 degrees in downtown san jose and south san jose 38 degrees. you can see out in the tri-valley right now, 38 degrees. and the north bay, santa rosa down to 35 degrees with a little bit of patchy fog to start the day tomorrow morning. numbers close to what we're
seeing right now is how we will start the day tomorrow. for afternoon highs, increasing clouds, numbers in the mid-50s in the south bay including in san jose with highs in the 54 degree range. pleasanton low 50s. and for the peninsula up toward san francisco by late afternoon may begin to see showers dropping out of the north bay, highs in the north 50s and chilly low 50s in santa rosa and sonoma. perhaps looking at snow levels down to about 2,000 feet as very chilly air drops down the coast. tomorrow will start off dry with increasing clouds. sunday evening you are beginning to see the showers around the santa cruz mountains and more so on monday. this is the window of opportunity. if any of these heavier showers are mixed with that cooler air that might drop snow levels just briefly monday. then tuesday we begin to see more mild air and progressively wetter forecast by wednesday, thursday, and friday.
air temperatures here on monday, the areas here you are looking at in blue and purple, cold enough to maybe support snow levels down to 2,000 feet in the north bay and 3500 feet in the south bay. and on tuesday and wednesday, that starts to shift out of here as heavier rain and warmer air begin to move in. rain totals between now and tuesday morning and into the evening, highest here in the north bay. in the sierra, a good foot or more of snow. friday looks like we'll catch a break. and next weekend more rain sets up. what could power up this system is an atmospheric river next week. if that sets up that is a lot of rain for parts of california north and south for next weekend. off the map now. the freezing temperatures are gone. heavier rain, milder
temperatures and through the week, a slight chance of low snow levels tuesday morning, wednesday, thursday and saturday we could see heavy rain and some projections for 3 to 4 feet of snow in the sierra. the snow levels will come up but stay in the sierra. >> thank you, rob. they probably would not have made it to midnight. they are about my speed. kids who celebrated the new year at noon. also the days could be numbered for the head coach and general manager of the 49ers. as we go to break, here are new year's resolutions from the people in the bay area. >> to be successful in a new job and creating my new business and helping charles get his off the ground and be a better person to all those i know. >> to look after the kids. they are the most important things we live for. >> i want to be with my

mcgloin but he hasn't made a start under center since 2013. how will this change what the raiders do offensively? will they have to simplify the play week? >> the coaches have told me simply not because matt mcgloin knows the offense well enough to be responsible for making checks at the line of scrimmage. he will have help from the center but matt mcgloin will have all the veto power that carr had throughout the course of the season. >> there is a lot on the line. oakland has a chance to win the afc west for the first time in 14 years. what would a division title mean for the franchise and the team as they head into the playoffs? >> it would mean so much to this group and especially to the front office which tore this roster down to the studs and built it back up and found
