evacuations for almost 190,000 people have been ordered. search and rescue helicopters are ready and 23,000 california national guards are on alert as officials hold their breath that a dam holds. a major winter storm packing two feet of snow and 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts are headed to the northeast today. a wild night for music's biggest stars as gaga wowed the crowd and adele's must-see do-over as she went head to head with beyonce for most trophies. north korea sends donald trump his first major foreign military test by launching a successful missile test. great news for drivers this morning. good monday morning to you. disaster looms over the nation's tallest dam. almost 190,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the area's downstream from the oroville dam in california. authorities say that unexpected erosion in an emergency spillway threatens to unleash uncontrolled floodwaters from the dam's massive reservoir. the officials have been releasing controlled amounts of water through another spillway to prevent further erosion. they plan to drop large rocks from helicopters into the spillway to help stop it. 70 miles south of the oroville dam, the state's capital, california's governor issued an emergency order to help coordinate the responding teams. they're preparing for incoming storms that could affect this complex and rapidly changing situation. we'll have updates throughout the day here on nbc. this morning, the white house is preparing to move forward on the temporary immigration ban.

seoul, south korea. was the missile launch a step toward something larger? >> reporter: that's what u.s. security officials fear. they fear somewhere down the line north korea will be able to develop a long range missile that is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. this was a medium range missile. north korea says the test was successful, traveled 310 miles dropping into the sea before it reached the japanese sea. but, it happened just as president trump was meeting with the japanese prime minister. that is why many people believe this wasn't just a military test, if you like. it was a political test of the new president, of the new administration. south korea saying it believes this was a direct challenge for administrations tough stance on north korea. >> kier simmons in south korea,

thank you. it is music's biggest night of the year. we're talking about the 59th annual grammy awards. the night arguably belonged to adele. the british songstress kicked off the show with "hello" my nus the glitches from last year's performance. adele was one of the night's biggest winners, taking home all five awards she was nominated for including song, record, and album of the year. she is the only artist ever to sweep the top three twice after also winning them in 2012. it wasn't all smooth sailing for adele who literally stopped the show during her tribute to the late george michael. >> i'm sorry for swearing and i'm sorry for starting again, can we please start it again? i'm sorry, i can't mess this up for him. i'm sorry. >> adele calling it like it is. metallica front man james hetfield's microphone wasn't working at the start of the band's performance with lady gaga. some of the shows highs included beyonce, who of course performed a medley of songs and gave a moving speech after winning the grammy for best urban contemporary album.

it was the best weekend at the 2017 box office so far and one major theme, see equals. the dark knight rose to the top bringing in $55 million. nbc universal's 50 shades darker settled for second place $46.8 million and third place, the biggest surprise, john wick, chapter two, raked in $30 million. leading the news this morning, in a sign of how disconnected some republican lawmakers feel from the new administration, one senator is looking to get the white house's attention by tweeting. gop senator chuck grassley spent several days posting these tweets hoping to draw mr. trump's attention to the issues of transparency and democracy in russia among other things. at one point tweeting flatly, answer my letter. grassley's office confirmed these are his tweets and he was not hacked as some guessed.

however he didn't directly tweet at the president, so not quite sure if those messages have gotten through. to germany where hundreds of people were evacuated from its busy hamburg airport. more than a dozen flights canceled. dozens of people were injured by a hazardous material authorities believe spread through the airport's air conditioning system. police and firefighters concluded the substance was most likely pepper spray. authorities are still working on finding out how it got into the system but ruled out terrorism. in the end it injured some 68 people, both passengers and staff. venice is in full carnival swing, kicking off festivities with a fantastic boat parade. hundreds of revelers lined the italian city's canal to see the elaborate boats float by. the people inside were a sight, dressed in full costume from cowgirls, pirates and sumo wrestlers as you can see there. venice has one of the world's oldest carnival celebrations which is the period of excess before lent begins. legendary jazz singer al jarreau died over the weekend.

stock futures are on the upside at the moment. adele may have gotten more grammys than beyonce but sony was the big winner. cnbc is following that, a little less pain at the pump as well. good morning. >> the average price of unledded fell five cents in the past three weeks to $2.31 a gallon. it's despite rising food prices. the biggest, los angeles $2.87 a gallon. the cheapest, cleveland at $1.97. verizon is bringing back an unlimited data plan, the first in five years as it faces increasing competition from wireless carriers. sprint launched their own plan last week. verizon is 80 bucks a month for data, talk and text and $45 for extra lines. verizon said it wasn't considering unlimited plans.
