"today in the bay" continues right now. thanks for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. it's friday. >> it's going to be windy as you step out the door. really having one of those bad hair days. don't worry about doing your work until you get to work. winds gusting at 25 to 30 miles an hour. it looks calm as we look at palo alto. we see temperatures in sunnyv e sunnyvale. great way to start out the weekend. let's head out to mike. not so great for a couple of
drivers. >> a couple of spots. overall, kari, it's a slighter commute as we would expect. the wind is one factor for the san mateo bridge. someone ran out of gas just before they get to the peak of the high rise. there's a backup from the flat section. use the dunn bart ton bridge if you can because that's clear across highway 84. jammed up through pittburg, a tough drive getting into west of concord. towards the bay bridge, 17 minutes from that same highway 4 to the same crowded bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. all right. this may have gotten some people out of bed. did you feel it? we've already spoken to people south of the bay. they felt shaking from a light earthquake just before 4:00 this morning. it was centered in benito county
20 miles south of hollister. it was a 4.0 magnitude quake. this is a live picture. it's nice and quiet. our sister station in monterey says they felt the light rolling. no reports of damage or injury. all right. developing this morning, laura, some temporary relief for the victims of this week's massive fire at an oakland apartment building. >> the deadline for the victims to move out of the shelter was supposed to be today but it's been extended through the weekend. >> a temporary window here. pete suratos is showing us how the community is coming together to help the victims. >> reporter: that's right, sam. an outpouring of support. first things first, this center will remain open for those that have been displaced, at least through the weekend. we're learning what may have caused this fire.
i'll show you some of that video from earlier in the week, the massive four-alarm fire taking the lives of four residents. but according to the city of oakland, this fire was accidental and it was caused by a candle untilin a room. a resident told me that may have been the cause. as a result of this, we know that ten children were displaced and we've seen schools pitch in to help out. here's one principal talking about it. >> but there was really a need for something more, to help them with housing and help them get back on their feet. so we started a hoover recovery fund and in about 24 hours we've raised a little over $6,000. >> reporter: good work that that school is down. there have been several code complaints, including mold, lack of heat and not providing basic fire equipment to tenants.
a majority of the apartment building was used as transitional housing for the mentally ill, the homeless population and those getting out of prison. we know the lawyers representing those clients have voiced their concerns about this building in the past. they will hold a news conference later this afternoon. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> thank you, pete. 6:04 on this friday. a warning for people who use the ferry are warned not to cut it too close. there were several close calls from the overflow parking lot across the street. the district spokeswoman says the bend in the road causes drivers to have a hard time seeing people. there may be new life this morning for a b.a.r.t. station that fizzled years ago. this would be south of the fremont station. it was actually considered more than a decade ago. "the mercury news" reports that city leaders are re-evaluating
it because of new funding options. let's go live now to the bay bridge this morning. if you happen to take the bay bridge this morning or even at night, it can be a painful commute. a new poll out by the bay area council finds 80% of people in the bay area believe traffic has reached a, quote, crisis level. 70% say they support new taxes to help fix that problem. laura, tensions continue to he is a escalate at an east bay high school after offensive pictures posted online by students and they were not expelled. yesterday, hundreds of students from albany high school staged a sit-in and the seven accused students in the cyberbullying attack snuck out the side doors after school. >> a lot of people spoke out in the crowd, like they called out
their names personally and just basically told them how we felt about it and a lot of those people were very embarrassed and covering their faces and some of them are smiling and laughing. >> well, the superintendent said he's proud of the way that students in the community have rallied to fight racism. another rally is scheduled for today after school. new this morning, the show will go on in seattle after a cirque du soleil acrobat avoided serious injury. wait until you see how high up she was. this is video just after it happened. a performer had a hard landing on a swing act and stayed down. you can see her fellow workers tending to her aid. the seattle post intelligence showed a photo of her going airborne just before getting hurt. she's expected to be okay. a performance was put on hold last november when a worker died. that was not during a performance. it's 6:06. a developing story out of
atlanta, recovery efforts are continuing right now after a fire caused part of a major interstate to collapse. this was the scene of i-85 during rush hour. firefighters say the fire actually burned right under the freeway. luckily, no one was hurt. the governor has declared a state of emergency. the interstate will be closed for the foreseeable future. >> this is going to take time for inspection and it's going to take time for the engineers to assess what they are going to have to do to build it back. >> this reminds me of a scene in the bay area ten years ago. you may recall it as well. a tanker fire that caused the mcarthur maze to collapse. the driver of the truck was the only person injured there. scary moments on the ball field. everyone, take cover. why? because there was a swarm of bees during the rockies and padres spring training game. >> a pack of bees swarmed the
field and players from both teams -- they went down. they went down on the dirt to avoid them during the ninth inning of the game. they stayed down for about ten seconds or so before they eventually stood up. >> that's in southern california. nicer here. >> wow. i would have been -- i would have ran out of there. i wouldn't have just bent down. hopefully nothing like that happens today at at&t park. warm weather, a lot of sunshine. but it will start to get cool as we go into the evening. gusty winds. look at the temperatures as we go into the 9:00 and 10:00 hour. the fans heading out of the stadium will also have cool weather to deal with but also clear skies. a very nice night for baseball. highs today reaching into the upper 70s for the north bay. mid-7 mid-70s for the ftri-valley.

feel like i'm being healthy but i know i'm not. >> maybe you're healthier than you think. panera will be the first to post that information. >> i bet it's loaded with sugar. things are about to change in cupertino. this is apple's campus. some 12,000 apple employees will be moving in. for months, apple said that would be in april. tomorrow is april 1st, no fooling. the move-in process is expected to take about six months. >> it's going to take a while but those are cool digs there. apple will keep a close eye on the visit by the chinese president next week. >> president xi will visit mar-a-lago on thursday. >> and not the white house. that's actually not unusual. president reagan hosted gorbachev at his ranch in california rather than the white
house. apple is concerned about the xi visit because of the tone president trump is striking ahead of that visit. president trump, as you well know, has threatened to slap huge tariffs on products made in china. thursday, our president tweeted the meeting next week with china will be a very difficult one in that we can no longer have massive trade deficits and job losses. american companies must be prepared to look at other alternatives. iphones, of course, are made in china. what's mysterious is what does the president mean about alternatives? does he mean bringing the manufacturer back to america or not manufacturing them in china? we'll find out more next week. the white house is still reeling over news that michael flynn will testify in exchange for immunity from prosecution. we'll take a closer look at that in half an hour. in the meantime, wall street is
paying attention to the problem in the white house. if the administration gets bogged down in the investigation, it will have trouble moving forward with its planned tax cuts. dow is up 69 and nasdaq up 16. and honey nut cheerioses took its bee off their cereal box to bring attention to the lack of bees. one of the plants listed is the chinese forget me not and apparently considered a weed here in america. the seed supplier of general mills says they caught that. they didn't put that plant in there but a biologist says there are a number of plants that many states would be considered nonnative invasive plants. general mills says you can find

advisories in effect, we've been talking about how windy it is. it's still going on this morning. wind advisory continuing for parts of the north bay as well as the east bay hills. this is where we'll see the highest wind gusts, up to 50 miles an hour today. if you're planning to head out there, hiking in the north bay, it will be a chilly morning and beautiful sunrise. temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. going from san jose and into your closet this morning, let me help you make some plans with all that we have going on today. you definitely need a baseball cap and maybe a hoodie for the cool temperatures starting out and something to held your hair down. later on today, sunglasses and flip-flops as our temperatures warm up. our temperatures warm up. looking at the forecast for the
next several days, expect it to stay in the upper 60s to low 7 o 70s. wind is relaxing tomorrow. up to 79 degrees. wouldn't be surprised if a few spots hit 80. that will carry us into early next week. and now mike is updating us what is going on at the san mateo bridge. that's right. let me take you right out there and get the live shot. you can see the slowing on this bag map. we have the backup. along that flat section, that looks horrible but relief because the issue has been cleared. we're talking about a slower drive. 23 minutes across that area. dumbarton bridge is a much better option. recovery for 92. 84 is the much better route.

all right. it turns out that being in front of a screen all day can cause physical pain, even this kind of a screen. phones attached to your hands. experts seeing more and more patients with injuries related to electronics. here's how. one of the most common is technique. it's the problem caused by looking down at your phone or whatever device you're using. lifting your phone to eye level can help prevent those problems. avoid using the same hand or finger to type. >> switch it back and ford. i advocate for people to use two hands. >> bad posture is contributing to the problem. make sure you keep your feet flat on the floor and remember to stand up frequently, laura. >> our modern day problems here, sam. it's 6:24 right now. nbc bay area responds to a lot of problems out there. in fact, we've had about 5,000 in total.

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. >> you pop right out of bed on friday, don't you? >> yes. it's the end of the week. we have an awesome weekend on the way. it will be easier to get up and moving, right? it's cool as we step out and those winds are kicking up. it's 53 degrees in livermore and in san jose. 54 in oakland. 56 in san francisco. 46 in santa rosa. a little cool to start as some of the kids have school today. some of them don't because of cesar chavez day. by the end of the day, hold on to the homework because it will be very chilly and very warm and windy. we'll talk about what to expect as we head into the weekend as the winds calm down but mike has a very unpleasant look at the san mateo bridge. >> especially considering it's friday where we typically see lighter traffic.
we're just starting to see recovery. a slow drive across the flat section for highway 92 westbound. let's look at your map. a disabled vehicle ran out of gas. everything else, look how light it is. use the dumbarton bridge. again, recovery of the flat section is the last to see it. it ripples back from the high rise. if you're traveling north, that might be an alternate as well. >> thank you, mike. it's 6:31. new this morning, an early-morning fire breaking out at a duplex in san jose. firefighters still at the scene this morning. monitoring some of those hot spots. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene with more on what happened. we see some of the furniture behind you, kris. people were displaced? >> reporter: yeah. three people cannot come home anymore. as you mentioned, a lot of the
belongings are right here curbside. thiel they will be trying to find out what is next. crews were cutting plywood sheets to keep people out. that is after firefighters were able to leave the scene because they were finished with watching hot spots. some of the folks living nearby, not in the duplex itself, had to be evacuated as a precaution. the fire fight lasted about half an hour and when it was over, both units were damaged. firefighters were on the scene for a while to make sure that the hot spots didn't flare-up. this is 280 to the north, happy hollow to the southeast, to give you a perspective of where we are. the good news is, though, no one was hurt. as these folks try to pick up the pieces, fire investigator also try to pinpoint the cause. kris sanchez, "today in the
bay". one person is in custody after a stabbing in a walmart restroom. this happened a little after 9:00 last night in antioch at the walmart on lone tree way and hillcrest. two people were involved in that in a dispute outside of the store. one person chased the other person inside. officers arrested the suspect at the scene. no word on the type of weapon used in the stabbing or the severity of the victim's injuries. the search is continuing for suspects connected to a stabbing in downtown willow glen in san jose. the crime has many people shocked. a man in his 20s was beaten and stabbed by a group of men. it happened last night about 8:00 near the popular restaurant. the victim appeared all right and was talking to police. people we spoke to were shaken up about what happened. >> never had any problems, never any robberies or even any suspicious activity. so, yeah, it's a little bit unnerving. >> police have not released any information on the suspects.
new this morning, a string of predatory behavior. the search is on for a man who exposed him stove a young girl and young woman on the peninsula. >> sharon kutsuda is live where the incidents happened and a newly released photo of the suspect. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. one happened here and the other along the street. it's right near a lot of homes. police say the suspect exposed himself to a 19-year-old woman walking around 6:00 p.m. here on monday. they believe the same man exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl walking along mariposa avenue in broad daylight at 2:30 in the afternoon. as you can see, this is westmoor high school and jefferson elementary school. police have released a sketch of the man described as hispanic or
white and about 6 feet tall and he appears to be driving a 2003 toyota camera with a sticker on the driver's side of the window. the pictures are poor quality but they hope it might trigger some leads. back here live, you can see where the sun is rising and over in that area along the park, we just saw a few minutes ago one student walking across the park. so clearly, this is a very busy park and considering that one of these incidents happened at 2:30 when school gets out, police are very concerned. they are hoping if you have any information, you call the daly city police department. reporting live in daily city, sharon kutsuda, "today in the bay". a suspect has been arrested in connection with a fire in half moon bay not far from downtown. sheriffs say gilbert flores, a homeless man, intentionally set that fire.
the flames ripped through five greenhouses and storage containers, too. nobody was injured. happening today, a live look at at&t park. a nice start to our morning. the bay bridge series actually got under way last night. open d opening day for major league baseball is tomorrow. if you're keeping score at home, the giants already won 3-0. tonight's game at at&t park and then at 7:00 p.m. make it very convenient for a friday night. tomorrow, the series is moving on to the coliseum. >> no doubt a lot of people will be tweeting about those games. twitter is trying to find creative ways, shall we say, to get around the 140 character limit. >> i'm always looking for words that i can use. when you reply to someone now, their users names will no longer count towards the 140 character limit. it will be especially helpful with some group conversations where several users are

a great one. some events going on, including the walking tours in san francisco. learn a little bit of history there. it's going to be beautiful and up to 68 degrees by the time the event ends at 1:30 in the afternoon. later on this evening, we have the bay bridge series game 2 tonight at at&t park and temperatures in the mid-60s. by the time it starts, lower 60s. beautiful evening but still kind of windy, too. wear extra layers. and also for the weekend, for the valleys and inland areas, starting out tomorrow morning, 56 degrees. 69 at noontime and 79 as we go into the afternoon. more on sunday but a little cooler through the day. also, very comfortable with your short sleeves. you'll need your sunglasses and by sunday evening, as we wrap it up, it's still a very nice day out there. maybe you want to head to santa cruz. tomorrow, we're looking at temperatures starting out in the mid-50s, early in the morning as

killed in the attack. the couple were in eng graland celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. the attack happened on the last day of their trip. new details in the quadruple killing in san francisco that has ties to the bay area. police say the man accused of killing four people initially confessed to his cousin. the cousin then called police. 56-year-old salvador is accused of killing his wife, their two children and his niece last week. he was later found and arrested in san francisco. 6:44 right now, new this morning, four people are behind bars accused of being part of an infamous robbery ring. this was at pricey union spring stores. a robbery and chase ensued in southern california. the thieves are stolen upwards of $1 million statewide. police are hoping to catch
suspects who robbed a couple in their driveway in morago. >> one guy, they were grabbing her purse. she held onto her purse. she was really frightened. >> so far, no information on the suspects. a similar robbery happened in nearby orinda when a woman in her 70s was shot but she survived. the antolin murder industrial takes a day off. he's accused of killing sierra lamar. defense lawyers have taken a major step in trying to poke holes in the evidence. the defense has been claiming that a strand of lamar's hair found on garcia's car was planted. they showed two photos which
their expert said showed no hair. then the defense showed another photo taken months later which showed hair. prosecutors say the hair was invisible because of the kind of came ra lens being used. hillary clinton will be honoring women in washington, d.c., today. it's the annual hillary clinton's annual award show at georgetown university. she's also expected to speak on the role women can play in international to international politics and peace-building efforts. and here we are on day 71. >> scott, things have taken a serious turn. >> very serious. a historic moment in the white house which has already had historic moments, sam. one of the former insiders may soon be one of the biggest opponents. michael flynn, as you well know, was national security adviser and he's willing to testify about the russian connection in
exchange for immunity. flynn was the fellow who got caught lying about his meetings with russia and was fired after the fbi alerted the white house about those lies making him the shortest serving national security adviser since that position was invented. this story is really full of irony because flynn was so vocal about attacking hillary clinton during the campaign alleging she had committed crimes. here he is at the republican national convention. >> lock her up. that's right. yep, that's right. if i did a tenth of what she did, i would be in jail today. >> now, flynn's defenders are quick to point out, just because somebody asks for immunity doesn't mean they're guilty. president trump tweeted this morning, "mike flynn should ask for immunity in that this is a
witch hunt by media and democrats of historic portion." of course, the hunt is led by the republicans in the house and senate. they are both in charge of the house and the senate intelligence committees. there's also an investigation by the fbi. the fbi director pointing out wednesday, he's not on anybody's side. as for that idea that if you're asking for immunity it doesn't mean you're guilty, that's fair. though, again, here's mike flynn himself talking about hillary clinton again on "meet the press" last year. >> they have been given immunity to include her former chief of staff. when you're given immunity, that means you've probably committed a crime. >> important point, flynn has asked for immunity but nobody has granted it. the two congressional investigations and the fbi had all face them to questions without immunity but he has the option of taking the fifth. >> interesting to hear him in his own words.

6:57 on your friday morning, welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the stories we're following on "today in the bay". three people are out of a home after a fire ripped through it overnight. flames broke out of this duplex on south 11th street not far from san jose state after midnight. the heat from the flames were so intense that nearby homes had to be evacuated. nobody was hurt and no word yet on a cause. and no damages or injuries reported after an earthquake south of the bay area. it was centered in san medino county 20 miles south of hollister. it was a 4.0 magnitude quake. we spoke to our sister station
in monterey and workers felt light rolling at 3:55. 6:57, new this morning, police are looking for a man who exposed himself to a young girl and young woman. it happened in daly city on monday. police say the man exposed himself to a 19-year-old and then on wednesday afternoon, that involved a 12-year-old girl. we've been following the aftermath of this week's massive fire at an oakland apartment building. those who were displaced have found temporary relief at the west oakland youth center. they will be able to stay there through the weekend as the city tries to find them permanent housing. four people tragically killed in that fire and we now know it was caused by a lit candle. >> wow. all right. coming up next on the "today" show, scott mcgrew was talking about this earlier, michael flynn is offering to testify in exchange for immunity. plus, an exclusive conversation with house minority leader nancy
