as today's g-20 meetings get underway, protesters are out in force. yesterday was a warmup, certain to be a ruckus friday. only thing hotter than protests are the temperature in the room when trump and putin meet for an agenda driven face-to-face. wildfires in 11 states from california, cattle seeking refuge to flames in colorado where mandatory evacuations have been ordered. reports that foreign hackers incoming russia are targeting the u.s. electrical grid, incoming power plants. katy perry needs your help."

early today" starts right now. high stakes, one-on-one, hours away from president trump's first face-to-face meeting with president trump after reports both men have shook hands and met this morning. the political world is watching for clues on what either leader says in g-20 summit in germany. this comes one day after president trump sent this mixed message to moscow. >> i think it was russia. i think it could have been other people in other countries. >> we urge russia to cease its destabilizing activities in ukraine and elsewhere and support for hostile regimes. >> the meeting pits trump, the showman, against putin, shrewd leader with the ultimate poker face taking place on the sidelines of the g-20 summit, amid of what's certain to be a date of violent clashes. thousands of organized

disruptions e represented throughout the day and night. we were there on scene. >> there, you can see, one of those smoke bombs that has gone off in the middle of the crowd now. now, further back, the german riot police are lined up, moving into this antig-20 protest. we're right in the center of it. they are clearly determined, the german authorities to prevent these protesters from staying here. >> this is the scene this morning as protests already get underway there, and while the violent images you see there are new, g-20 protests, themselves, are not. massive demonstrations are waged in city after city going back decades. the protest in seattle was the largest political protests in recent history. this morning, it is mr. trump and putin holding the the

world's attention in what's sure to be the most consequential meeting on trump's 169th day of his presidency. we have the trump-pew tip meeting, and we are covering the protests already underway. we begin with jay. jay, good morning to you. what can we expect from mr. trump and putin? >> reporter: hey, francis, good morning. well, the white house not tipping its hand at all, not discussing anything that could be on the agenda when the leaders meet in two hours. some of what is discussed you'd believe is north korea, ukraine, and, of course, the war on terror. many back home, including democratic congress members, who are demanding that the president confront president putin about russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. we have been told that the two briefly spoke this morning and shook hands ahead of this

meeting, historic meeting here in hamburg, again, in just about two and a half hours. president pleaded this morning saying he looks forward to meeting with all of the leaders here, including russian president putin. he's also said that he will, quoting here, represent our country well and fight for its interests. a part of the meeting today will include russian foreign minister and, of course, secretary of state rex tillerson will be in the room along with translaters. will we ever find out what went on in there? likely not the case, but, again, this is something everyone has been looking forwards for months now. >> thank you for the update. now an update on the situation on the ground. protesting impacting the summit at all? >> reporter: well, sporadic conflict between police and

protesters. behind me, the police are trying to remove protesters sitting in the street blocking the path of a police convoy there, and, then, across this side, there's a line, again, of fairly relaxed riot police. you hear the sirens in the background because protesters are deploying guerrilla tactics to move this way, to try to get to the conference center, which is here where the leaders of the g- g-20 are meeting. we expect more squirmishes throughout the day as we saw yesterday. you see the fairly tense at times, yesterday, police said 111 police officers were injured. protesters say dozens were injured. protests less organized, but they do seem to have tactics. that is to seem to their way through here and get to places where meetings are hold. they are targeting the police where we think president trump

assaulted forcing the plane to turn around. the airport spokesperson says the plane was headed from seattle to beijing thursday when a 23-year-old man in first class assaulted a flight attendant. it happened 45 minutes into the flight, and the plane returned to seattle. delta says the man was restrained on board and removed by law enforcement after landing. two people were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the flight departed again for beijing around midnight. foreign hackers reportedly breaching the computer systems of u.s. energy facilities including nuclear power stations according to an fbi and homeland security report obtained by the "new york times," according to bloomberg, the culprit is russia. it's unclear if it's espionage

or disruption of the power grid. the wolf creek plant was targeted in kansas. they did not comment on cyber security but said no operation systems have been affected. in a joint statement the fbi and homeland security said there's no indication of a threat to public safety, and the lacks have been limited to administrative and business networks. ale from judge denied request in the state of hawaii to ban exemptions from president trump's travel ban. it affects six muslim-majority countries allows exemptions for those with close ties to the u.s., such as those with family. it excludes grandparents and fee yap says and asked the court to expand the exemption, but the judge watt said thursday only the supreme court can rule on the issue. it was the high court that allowed the limited version of the travel ban to go into effect until a final ruling later this year. massive wildfires in the

west leading to mandatory evacuation orders for hundreds of residents. flames leaped 125 feet into the air, threatening the resort town of breckenridge, colorado. one fueled by dry conditions, and 500 firefighters are working to fight the blaze. investigators are looking at the cause of the fires, but in los angeles, officials say 100 were sparked by illegal fireworks on the fourth of july. up in solano coupe, west of sacramento, a small herd of cattle struggle to escape the flames. fortunately fortunately they got their way across and appear to be doing okay. we got a hot and stormy start to the weekend. let's check in with nbc meteorologist bill karen with the forecast. bill, what are we looking at in. >> nothing good. hot in the west, excessive heat warnings, boise included.

here's the big heat, really intense three weeks ago, died off, and then it came back, 116 today in phoenix. that should break the record there. close in washington state. salt lake city a degree or two shy. saturday, record high possible in boise. vegas close, downtown l.a. close to the record high. thankfully, though, into next week, we watch the temperaturing coming down slightly. we had 110 in redding, 106 in sacramento, exceptionally warm also. let's meet one of the slower pitchers in major league baseball history. john jay, never pitched in a professional game until last night, throwing 16 pitches in all, and they were all slower than 67 miles per hour.
