today. >> this morning, a groundbreaking study in fact, the largest ever of its kind exploring a question that's fraught with controversy how do our genes influence our sexuality? well, the results are in nbc news medical correspondent dr. john torres is here with more dr. john, this has been a question for a long time huge debate about the role that genetics plays in our sexuality. what did the study find? >> it started back in the '90s when they found a segment of dna and dubbed that the gay gene that started the controversy and debate in the research community and regular community. this study looked at it, and almost 500,000 people they
looked at who donated their dna either to research or commercial dna sites to find out what their dna was, and answer a question about if they had ever had a same-sex encounter any time in their life then they looked at their genes, and they found out there were some genes associated with that. five genes in particular were associated with that, but that was not the only thing those genes only added a little bit to the overall sexual orientation of somebody. that's what researchers are saying. >> not one gene, five genes. >> some researchers suspect there are thousands of genes that might be causing the same thing. the bottom line here, what researchers are saying, what a lot of people are saying, they're getting into this conversation, is what this is showing is sexuality is very complex. it is a combination of genetic environment, environmental issues throughout our life, like you can't choose how tall you are or if you are right or left-handed, same thing with sexuality. genes have some influence but not complete.
>> some critics are saying they're concerned the results might be misconstrued by people who want to argue that sexuality is a choice, when it is not. talk a little bit about that >> the study was finished a while ago, but they had a big debate over what to do before they released the results. in the debate, that was exactly what they talked about should we release the results? how do we do this? the concern was that if they said, okay, this is genetic based, then anti-gay activists would say, let's try to edit the genes out. on the other hand, if it is not genetic based, let's talk about conversion therapy that was the concern in the community, how do we approach this and give the message out? hey, let's tell everybody exactly what is going on it is a complex factor a lot of things going on, like anything else in our life. like any other trait we have, it is environmental, genetic, social, there's a lot happening. >> does this hold true for men and women? >> that's what a lot of women are saying, thank goodness they started looking at women
until now, studies had mostly been done on gay men in this one they added women as well it applies to both sexes. >> to be clear here, according to the study, sexuality, it is nature and nurture. >> nature and nurture. it has genetic components and environmental components. >> okay. >> that is the bottom message. >> complicated study thank you so much for helping us break it down. thanks, doc. just ahead, beloved "jeopardy" host alex trebek back in action. the great news he just shared about his health from the game show set first, these messages. let's do it. ♪ come on. this summer, add a new member to the family. hurry in and lease the glc 300 suv for just $419 a month with credit toward your first month's payment at the mercedes-benz summer event. going on now.
