live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." good evening. i'm eric thomas. we begin with developing news. at least 28 people have been killed if a 7.8 earthquake in ecuador. it hit about 5:00 this evening on the nation's west coast. several large after shocks have followed. this is video from inside a grocery store. right now there is a tsunami warning in ecuador and colombia. the death toll from two major earthquakes in japan continues to climb. at least 41 people are dead and 1500 injured from both quakes. many people are choosing to live
outdoors. the military is pitching in by making rice balls to distribute to quake victims. the island nation was hit by two violent quakes wednesday and friday. the largest was a magnitude 7.0 yesterday. we're getting new images of the earthquake's impact. take a look at this car hanging over the ledge of a parking lot. several landslides are reported after the second quake and some homes are now hanging at the edge of mountains. rescuers have called off the search for two missing teens at ocean beach in san francisco. they were a group of four friends that got into the water earlier this afternoon. witnesses saw two of the boys in waist deep water when they were swept away. the other two made it back to shore and were being treated. a woman who has been coming to the beach for 38 years said you must be careful with those waves. >> when the waves are like this, it looks harmless. but as the tide comes in wave after wave, it's got a really
bad undertow. >> the coast guard sent out searchers to look for the boys. here in the bay area, a lot of people spent the day outdoors. these people soaked in the sun and warmth. in marin county, the beaches were busy. the sheriff's office tweeted this picture. and a live look from our golden gate bridge cam. of course it's nighttime so it's dark, but a lot of tourists had breathtaking views earlier. drew? >> it is very warm out there. temperatures are still in the 60s and 70s. live doppler 7 hd has a clear scan. if we can, take our weather graphics here. time lapse view shows you a beautiful day on the bay. you like today?
it's a carbon copy tomorrow, with warmer temperatures. right now we are mild in the 60s and 70s. it's 64 in san francisco and san jose at 66 degrees. that 24 hour temperature change, are warmer by some five degrees compared to yesterday. overnight tonight, it's going to be a mild night, so that is going to set the stage for a very hot day. time's running out if you want to enjoy the ski slopes of northern california. three resorts all plan to close tomorrow. skiing will continue until next sunday at heavenly. several others have not set a closing date just yet. today in san francisco, a burglar crashed down do a car after a roof top chase. it happened in knob hill early this morning. alyssa harrington has details. >> it was very scary.
>> reporter: tiffany norman was asleep when this morning -- >> i just heard this banging on the door and all of a sudden there was somebody in my apartment. >> reporter: a stranger armed with a gun broke down her door and entered her apartment. police chased the man across the tops of several buildings. he tried to jump to a key to escape but fell three stories landing on a parked cars. neighbors say they woke up to the sound of a large thud and this is what they found outside. frantics moments of the bizarre chase were broadcast. >> i just heard screaming, somebody like running down the street screaming. >> reporter: the suspect's crime spree started this morning. he's accused of breaking into homes on leavenworth street, gaining access through the roof. >> he cut through some construction plastic, went into an apartment, came out and while the police were taking a report
for that, they saw him running down this way and he had a gun. >> reporter: the suspect allegedly held one victim up at gunpoint. he also pointed the gun at police. the man was hurt and is at the hospital. when he's out, he will be booked into jail. in san francisco, alyssa harrington, "abc7 news." now to the east bay where seven people escaped a gas-fueled fire in pittsburgh. it started this morning on raindrop circle and spread next door. it caused about $400,000 in damage. no injuries. the red cross is helping out both families. in the first game of the warriors postseason, the team look an early lead and never back, winning 104-78 over the rockets. but steph curry tweaked his ankle. steve kerr said he's questionable for game two on monday. shu will have more coming up in sports. right now, cornell bernard has reaction from fans on the big win. >> yeah!

this is "abc7 news." >> ground breaking surgery at ucsf medical center. a texas man has undergone the first elbow-to-elbow transplant. reggie cook fell asleep at the wheel and an accident made him a quadriplegic. at first, he suggested cut it off, but then he had a better idea. >> and i said, you know, can we possibly use the elbow from this and a light went off in the doctor's head. >> doctors plan to remove his left arm and transplant the elbow from that in the right arm. he said the use of the right arm
will give him his independence. help could be on the way to even out the uneven pricing between men and women's goods like toiletries and clothing. lawmakers call it another form of gender discrimination. women's products are more expensive than men's products 42% of the time. water has been thrown on the scorching bay area real estate market. home prices have dropped for the first time in four years. red fin is reporting prices were down almost 2% in march. the sales price is 1.04 million dollars. the cost of homes in san francisco, up nearly 4%, but even that increase is the smallest in a year. so experts believe would-be sellers are holding on to their properties so they won't become buyers in this market. a new wing is being attached to the international space station. coming up next on "abc7 news" at 9:00, what scientists hope to
today astronauts aboard the international space station began to test the first inflate able activity module. right now the room is just 8 x but will expand to nearly five times that size by the end of next month. for two years, the crew will test its integrity, temperature controls and how well it blocks

way. beautiful bay area, this is gorgeous, clear skies over the san francisco bay right now. and temperature wise, some spots are still in the 70s like concord. 65 in fremont. 66 in san jose. the same in san francisco. cooling off in the north bay. parts of the north bay overnight tonight will drop into the upper 40s. live doppler 7 hd along with satellite, the reason why we're sunny and warm, one area of high pressure off the coast, another one just to the north and east. what will happen overnight, these two will join forces and strengthen, meaning we're warmer tomorrow afternoon than today. we're going to warm in the morning. by 10:00 in the morning, a couple of spots like san jose, san ramone, already at 70 degrees. by noon, some spots are getting close to 80 degrees. i think a lot of spots tomorrow will reach that 80 degree mark and higher.

coming up tonight at 11:00, cleaning up after devastation in ecuador. the images are just coming in after a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake. a south bay homeowner is furious after a house fire. he says he complained numerous times about this fire hydrant not working. tonight when firefighters needed it most, they had to go elsewhere for water. when you walk on two legs or four, most people would agree this was a great day to get outside. "abc7 news" was at the mark in san francisco for dog fest. it's a community dog show and fund-raiser for mckinley elementary school. lots of dogs of all different breeds enjoyed the warm day. there were also fun games and face painting for the kids. this was the ninth year of the event. going to get warmer and even
