live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> now at 11:00, a giant sinkhole swallowed a busy san francisco street. a family in an suv was caught in the middle and tonight they are talking about their ordeal only a abc7 news. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. it was wild and it happened on new montgomery and mission street in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. >> part of mission street is still closed. indicate -- katie is live at the scene with the new detail >> reporter: ama and dan, it was chaos out here. rush hour traffic forced around the large sinkhole that opened up. take a look at the scene right now. the street is still closed and it will remain closed at least

through tomorrow. an uber driver at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> you have to go downright away. i don't though what happened. >> the passengers didn't know either. >> we thought it was a flat tire and we saw these people clicking the radios. the cops came and they said don't move. >> the family visiting from los angeles didn't know how much danger they were in until they were safely out of the suv. >> it was terrifying. we felt it rould completely go down. >> it was so shocking to see that big, big hole there. >> the family had no choice but to shake it off and find another way to the airport to catch their flight home. passerses by had to stop and stair. she captured this video of the suv being called to solid ground. >> we were fascinating and interested in pulling the car out. >> you don't see it. oh my god.

the city is opening. >> a broken sewer line caused the sinkhole. a brick sewer main from 1875 and it will take a day or two to repair it. >> they will clean it up and attach new pipe and make the street whole again and put it back into service. >> the puc says sewer service is not disrupted. abc7 news. >> and a reminder when you see news that happens where you live share it with us with the # abc7 news. right now a boat remains stuck in san francisco bay near redwood city. the people on board had to be rescued. abc7 news was there as they were brought to shore unhurt. authorities have not said how they got stuck. rescuerses had to bring in a boat -- rescuerses had to bring in a boat small enough and it will have to be freed later. new video tonight. abc7 news was in san jose as firefighters responded to a house fire. two firefighters needed medical attention.
