most people taught how the industry is trying to attract more people to the sport. here in our area? ten offered promotions to hill. kolo 8 news now's colin lygren reports from one of them: alpine meadows. nats skiers and snowboarders alike... making an attempt at a world record today. "the idea is to get as many people learning the sport as possible, making it fun and getting more people involved." several ski hills across the nation... offering free lessons starting at exactly 10 a-m pacific time. "we are trying to as a ski industry across the u.s. the guinness book of world records for the number of people taking a ski lesson at the same time." at alpine meadows

participating in the event. nats - "everybody skied that really well." instructors leading beginners down the hill in small groups... teaching them the basics of both skiing... nats and riding. "the primary significance to us is to get more people out to enjoy skiing and riding and to learn correctly right off the get- go." instructors say... these beginners did pretty well for their first time. there were some falls... of course. but nothing that will keep people from coming back. "these professionals can break it down bit by bit, make it easy for you to succeed and have a lot of fun." "i learned the basics, which was great," "i have always snowboarded but i fancied a change. i just wanted to know what it was like to have two planks instead of one." "besides exposure to skiing or snowboarding, the goal really is to produce life long skiers and riders. people that will enjoy the mountain experience for the rest of their recreational life." it will still be a few weeks until we know if today's nationwide

successful. at alpine meadows... colin lygren... kolo 8 news now. a major rockslide closed one of the most-used enterances, to yosemite national park. the rocks came down early yesterday morning, onto highway 1-40--- between el portal, and yosemite valley. park rangers say the burn scar left by the 2014 dog rock fire, left the hillside primed for a slide. visitors who wanted to get into the park, faced a 3-hour detour to get to the park's south entrance. "we're upset because tomorrow's our last day and we really wanted to see this." nobody was injured in the rock slide. the park service says, it doesn't know when the road will reopen. ### it's recommended more than 14-thousand acres of nevada land be sold to the bureau of land management. the nevada appeal reports the area known as "bently land" in the pine nut mountains was nominated by gardnerville firm: legacy land and water. the land is worth about eleven-and-a-half million dollars.

a scare in the sky after a woman reportedly attacked a flight attendant. the united airlines shuttle with 69 passengers, and four crew members, took off from new york's laguardia airport thursday evening for chicago. 30 minutes into the flight, the woman reportedly asked if she could get off the plane. when she was told "no" .. passengers say she erupted into screems. "she ripped the flight attendant pearl neckless off and scratched her face up and .. by the time i realized what was happening 3 men had pulled her off and were trying to keep her calm and then she tried to attack another female passenger." the passengers used a necktie to tie the woman up-- and keep her calm. at one point, she reportedly shouted she was bi-polar. the pilot diverted to detroit-- where police took the woman off the plane. it then, continued to chicago-- arriving about an hour late. ### a texas grandmother has given birth to her own grandchild. the 54-year-old woman

for her daughter, who battled infertility for years. ken molestina has the story. these images inside a medical center of plano delivery room captured the moments baby kelcey game into the world on wednesday. she was perfectly healthy at 6 pounds 11 ounces. this c-section delivery might seem routine, but getting to this point was anything but. "my husband and i had been trying for a baby for three years." but after failed attempts to become pregnant--28-year old kelley mckissack took a different and drastic approach. she asked her mother tracy thompson if she would carry her baby for her. ironically, it was something she had jokingly asked her about before when she was only a teen. "she said if i can't carry my own baby would you ever carry it for me, and i said of course not dreaming i would actually be doing it." it was a mother's promise that would be called on, and she wasn't about to go back on it. "my lovely mom offered to give me the greatest gift i could

"the miracle happened and god watched over us." thompson had to be medically cleared to carry the baby, and closely monitored throughout the entire pregnancy. she was considered high risk and doctors didn't have much precedent to go on when the decided to go ahead with the procedure. "we had a very special pregnancy and special delivery and it couldn't have worked out better in the end." now the family is sharing their message... a new study shows a concerning difference between the sexes. doctor timothy johnson has tonight's medical minute. 1.5 million americans will face the diagnosis in 2016. cancer. the good news is that that's fewer than before. cancer rates are going down, according to a new study by the american cancer society. but this same report finds a big disparity between the sexes. cancer rates have dropped in men since

where they've stayed about the same for nearly two decades. why? well, part is due to changes in screening for men : a big drop in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, as routine prostate screening falls out of since most of the cancers found were not life-threatening. but another difference is that lung cancer in women is hitting a plateau because they life, and usually for some good news for both men and women... death rates from 23 percent since 1991. a promising sign that everyone in the future. with this medical johnson. the next winter storm will move into the sierra early saturday and then slide through the region during the day. while

on national tv today.... their game -- at the d- league showcase -- shown on nba tv reno taking on the westchester kinicks... former kings guard jimmer fredette in the d-league this season... jimmer hit three 3- pointers today... he finished with 21 points and 6 assists... reno trailed by 20 at one point... they make it a game, thanks to erick green... he hit 6 of his 7 3-point shots... green erupts for a game-high 37 points.. but the knicks hold on to win it 115-114 the wolf pack is back on the court tomorrow morning at air force... nevada has lost five road games in a row, and won just once in seven games this season... the falcons are really good at home, 8-and-1 so far this season... they're lead by hayden graham and trevor lyons, both are averaging about 15 points per game... it's an early tipoff tomorrow, set for 11am reno-time... air force is a one-point favorite at the sports books
