the region dry with increasing southwest flow in higher elevations and thicker cirrus spreading across the region. some valley inversions will remain today, although the inversion is not expected to be as strong compared to yesterday due to the ridge axis being displaced to the east by the next happening today... republican candidate for president-- john kasich-- will be swinging through reno. he'll be at the washoe county g-o-p headquarters starting at 1:45 this afternoon. his visit comes on the heels of g-o-p frontrunner donald trump's visit to reno on sunday. tickets are not required for kasich's event... but you're strongly encouraged to r-s-v-p. we've set up a link at kolo-tv-dot-com. ### and g-o-p candidate jeb bush is headed to elko later this month. he'll be at north- eastern nevada museum

entrance. it's an area where many shiite muslims are known to gather. isis claimed responsibility for the attack. today marks the sixth anniversary of the deadly, magnitude-seven earthquake that hit haiti in 2010. the initial quake struck just before 5 p.m. and was followed by several strong aftershocks. the eartuqhake was centered 15 miles southwest of the haitian capital, port-au- prince. estimates of the death toll vary -- some sources say up to 316- thousand people died. another 300-thousand people were hurt. anim prosecutors say no charges will be filed against former nba star lamar odom following his near fatal drug overdose in a nevada brothel. in october, the 36- year-old former n-b-a star was rushed to the hospital after he was found unconscious at "the love ranch" in nye county. authorities say a blood sample shows odom had cocaine in his system. but prosecutors say they couldn't prove possession or that odom took the drug

the mother of the so- called 'affluenza teen' will be released from jail today. this-- after authorities in texas reduced her bail from one-million dollars to 75-thousand. tonya couch will fitted with an electronic ankle monitor then released. she's accused of helping her son flee the country in order to avoid a probation violation hearing that could have led to jail time. the trial for the second police officer charged in the death of freddie gray has been put on hold. the maryland court of special appeals issued a stay that halts the trial of caesar goodson junior. the stay concerns the question of whether another of the charged officers can testify in goodson's trial. goodson drove the van that carried gray from the site of his arrest last april to the police station. gray emerged from that 45-minute ride critically injured. he died days later. a tragic story out of

four was killed after an explosion at their home. two daughters, ages eight and twelve, were all inside the home at the time. neighbors say the explosion left the first floor filled with smoke and the second floor engulfed in flames the cause of the blast investigation. chief frank risko/northfield center fire department "right now they don't suspect that it was gas. there was no trace of they indicated to us. but that'll fire marshals." the fire chief says this is the first deadly incident in his 25 years with the department. for experienced skiers and boarders, the backcountry is a popular place now that the snow is piling up. but it also comes with the risk of avalanche. a behind the scenes look at avalanche rescue training. plus ... we'll show you how a local catering company is putting a

skiers and riders heading to the backcountry this season. but with the reward of fresh snow--comes the risk of avalanche. that's why mount rose ski patrollers are using their knowledge about avalanche rescue to teach first responders. nats of dog digging "git it out, git it out." trained avalanche dogs

the back country and time for a rescue... is limited. that's why first responders are focusing on other ways they can find a buried skier... snowshoer... or snowmobiler. devin hiemstra with mt. rose ski patrol "eyesight and looking around should not be underestimated. we a lot of times find people because their hand is sticking up or their pole is sticking up or part of their body is sticking up and we can real quickly get to them and unbury them that way." first responders also learned the use of avalanche beacons and probes. they expect they'll use the skills at some point this winter. here's a live look at highway 267 at northstar. looks like some fog is moving in. for today, ridge axis moves slowly east

"that's why i call it secret service catering, because i was sneaking people into these places. and i thought, tourists come through the town so fast if you sit them down and feed them something they're going to sit and look and really appreciate their surroundings." heather took a break from catering for several years ... but recently decided to breathe new life into the business with the help of her husband jack. between shopping for her ingredients ... and prepping the food ... heather says she needs at least 3 full days to get ready for an event. "the goal is, no matter how insane it looks behind the scenes, is that that day it looks like 'boy, this looks easy'." each dinner has a different theme ... which ties in with the menu. then ... the day of the

location ... and when you show up ... no matter where it is ... the level of presentation is always the same. "it's become more of an old- school service style, little more fine dining twist on it." heather says ... not knowing the location ahead of time can be kind of nerve-wracking for some people. that's why her customers have to put a lot of trust in her. "you'll have to trust me that i'll have a place for you to use the bathroom, that you'll be covered if it rains, if it's too cold we won't be outside of course." while heather enjoys cooking ... she says her favorite part of the catering business ... is getting to see people enjoy her food. as the world continues to mourn the loss of rock and roll icon david bowie... memorials and tributes are popping up all around the world. including at a the cincinnati zoo. check out this unusual namesake to honor his legacy. the cincinnati zoo named this baby penguin "bowie" days before the singer's death. the fairy penguin was born on bowie's birthday on friday--and weighs less than two ounces. no word yet if the little bird is a boy or girl. the penguin will make its public debut at a zoo exhibit this spring. bowie died sunday of cancer at the age of 69.
