until then, good night.tonight on kolo 8 news now... we've seen plenty of winter weather this year... and it's putting a big strain on local roads. developing tonight... ten american sailors in the hands of iran... captured in the persian gulf. and somebody could be a billion and a half dollars richer after tomorrow's powerball drawing. for many people that jackpot means a chance to help a lot of charities. thanks for joining us. i'm sarah johns. i'm noah bond. we've been spoiled here in the truckee meadows over the last couple of years. those mild winters meant we spent less on heating, outerwear, and boots. of course, this season is different. and we're truly getting freeze-thaw cycles: causing potholes to appear on our roadways. kolo 8 news now's terri russell joins us with the story. terri, you went to one area of town where city of reno crews have been trying to keep up. we went to south virginia just north of

have started to appear over the last couple of weeks. it is not the only stretch of roadway that the city of reno finds itself playing catchup in a race they most likely won't win. its a sound that has become all too familiar for those who work and live in the south virginia street area between plumb and patriot. pot holes, which have started to appear over the last couple of weeks. the women's riding specialist here at great basin bicycles says she started taking another route to work. cat gardella/driver: to date, a little pot holey, unpredictable, especially right after the stop light at patriot and south virginia. nice big old rut has been there for several weeks.. gardella took that route today so she didn't notice crews working on filling the potholes. according the city's maintenance and operations manager marnell heinz, crews have been working on the road with an asphalt and aggregate mixture to help cover the pot holes which are about an inch deep. it will work for a a little while

if reconstructing the road can be tracked. another round of wet weather, is moving into northern nevada. chief meteorologist jeff thompson has your forecast. jeff? winter weather advisory for the sierra on wednesday, from 4 am until 10 pm for the tahoe basin, and from 1 am until midnight for the high sierra. snow totals of 6-12" above 7000', and 2-4" for the tahoe basin and truckee, are possible with this storm. expect winter driving and road controls at times. a pacific storm will push onshore overnight and through the region on wednesday. snow levels will be a little higher with this system, with mainly rain and wind expected below 5000'. sierra snow totals will not be very impressive, but will be enough to affect travel. after a brief break, another weaker system will bring another chance of sierra snow and valley showers late thursday into friday, with a third system expected on saturday. an early look at next week also appears stormy. - jeff tonight: a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 4 am. mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. south wind 5 to 10 mph. wednesday: rain likely before 4 pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers. cloudy, with a high near 46. breezy, with a southwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

arrested on murder charges last week.### developing in the middle east tonight... iran captured two small u-s navy boats, are are now holding ten of our sailors. pentagon officials say the boats had mechanical problems, and drifted into iranian waters. at the time they were going between bahrain and kuwait. officials say they received assurances from iran, the sailors will be returned safely and promptly. ### a fighter-pilot was able to safely eject from a jet crash in churchill county this morning. the f-a-18-hornet went down around eight-30 25 miles east of n-a-s fallon. the pilot was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but is expected to be okay. naval officials say the crash happened during a routine training mission.### the search for two missing fishermen at pyramid lake has been called off. it's new information we've learned in the last 90 minutes. tribal officials say they believe there's no longer a chance the search will be

the two bay area men were reported missing, at the lake, on new year's day. ### a group of protesters who have taken over an oregon wildlife refuge are taking more action: cutting down a fence on the property. the protest at the mel-wear malheur wildlife refuge is now in its second week. protesters are using government equipment to tear down the fence pole by pole. "this is ground that they've used for years in the past and now it's fenced off, prevented them from using it." another armed group has arrived from idaho. they say they're there to protect both the local community and the bundy group; and that they're neutral.### new developments tonight, about the last minute changes in a health plan, that left 7-hundred carson city area residents-- without access to their doctors. patients who signed up with the prominence health plan, were told--- after their open enrollment period ended, that their insurance would no longer be accepted at carson medical group, which includes many of the doctors in the

the medical group told us, prominence-- wanted to cut their compensation by a third, more than they could absorb, and too late to negotiate a solution. our calls yesterday produced no response from prominence.... but today, they issued a statement saying in part-- they contacted carson medical group on december first --proposing the change to their contract, which they say-- on average is at least 25-percent higher than that for the market as a whole. they say that proposal 17th. it should be noted-- that the december first notification, came four weeks into the enrollment period. the change has left prominence customers with access to only three family doctors, in the carson city and valley area. ### the california state n- double-a-c-p has endorsed a proposed ballot initiative to legalize recreational use of marijuana. group officials say legalizing marijuana is an important civil rights issue because pot- related arrests are "racially biased," and disproportionately affect blacks and latinos. backers of the measure

chapo. over the weekend, the magazine revealed that actor sean penn met the drug lord last fall. their secret meeting chapo's run from the law, after his escape from prison in mexico. in the video, el chapo is unapologetic about being a drug lord. "a way to survive... no other way to work in our economy .. to be able to make a living." authorities say penn's communications with el chapo, led them to his jungle hideout. mexican marines recaptured el chapo yesterday, after a fierce 5-hour gunfight with his henchmen. u-s prosecutors are fighting to get him into their courts. the mexican attorney general says the extradition process can take up to a year. ### investigators in philadelphia are looking into a tipster's claim: the man who shot a police officer was a part of a group of four people with "radical beliefs." edward archer is accused of ambushing officer jesse hartnett

18-year-old son ethan. the mother-son pair, disappearing last month after this video was posted online appearing to show ethan at a party where others were seen playing beer pong. he's been accused of violating his probation for killing four people in this 2013 drunk driving crash. his attorneys arguing the teen suffered from affluenza--that he was too spoiled to know right from wrong. the mother's arrest warrant says the duo drove to mexico after tonya took 30 thousand dollars our of her bank account. couch's older son -- ethan's half brother -- telling the judge yesterday authorities have frozen his mother's bank accounts and she has access to no other assets. "your testimony is that there is nothing...there is nothing." the judge has ordered tonya to follow conditions like wearing a gps bracelet. as for ethan couch...he's still in mexico fighting extradition to the u.s. there will be a hearing in texas next week to decide if the case will be moved from juvenile to adult court. lauren lyster, abc
