radio" traffic center. how's traffic looking so far? traffic running smoothly. no major delays on reno area highways. no major delays on highways in northern california. back to you in the studio. thanks very much mike. anim grisly new details are coming out this morning regarding a murder case out of humboldt county. kolo 8 news now's matt vaughan joins us with the latest on what detectives are now learning. there have been a lot of developments in the murder of james erwin in just the past few weeks ... after the victim's wife ... along with another man ... were arrested in connection with the crime. ... detectives now say 57- year old pam erwin of elko .... and 52-year-old james melendez ... tried to encase james erwin's body in concrete when they buried him in a shallow grave. that grave was found in the foothills south of golconda last year. erwin was arrested on january 5th on murder

killing her husband with a carving knife back in 2003. melendez was arrested last monday in lake havasu city, arizona and is facing charges of being an accessory to murder and conspiracy to conceal or destroy evidence. after learning these new details ... it's likely that at least one of those charges stems from trying to hide the victim's body. melendez remains in an arizona jail awaiting extradition. at a hearing last week, erwin waived her right to a preliminary hearing. she is now expected to enter a plea to a second-degree murder charge when she's back in court on february 2nd. it's not clear whether there's a plea deal on the table for erwin ... but according to nevada statutes ... a second degree murder charge carries a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison. reno police arrested three people after a high speed chase on i-80. police say an officer attempted to make a traffic stop yesterday morning, but the driver sped off onto the robb

swerved into another car then crashed into a fence. after the crash the three suspects that were in the car ran off -- but police found them a few hours later. the search continues for the missing sugar bowl ski instructor. today marks the fifth day since carson may was reported missing. doug johnson has the latest. --reporter pkg-as follows-- aircraft from the army national guard, and the california highway patrol were finally able to reach sugar bowl monday... and began looking for 23-year-old carson may in back country areas where ground crews were not able to go before. "it was too dangerous, it's still too dangerous to go back there with the snow last night, it's created a high avalanche concern. "helicopter is going to be looking for any clues of maybe skis, maybe a jacket." at the same time, search and rescue crews went back to the top of mt. judah to conduct a grid search on foot. "every foot we probe into the ground, probe around every tree well and we just look for clues until we get to the bottom." doug johnson standup "and search and rescue

"based on our investigation his gps was not enabled at the time on the phone." the reno fire department has a warning to help keep your pets safe during these cold winter months. since january 1st, there have been seven calls to the department for ice rescues -- compared to just two at this time last year. reno councilwoman naomi duerr and her husband herb duerr, had a scary experience last friday after their dog went chasing after bird on a pond near their home. thats when their

into a hole on the lake. duerr's husband quickly reacted and grabbed a ladder for his dog to latch onto -- thigh deep in the freezing water. naomi called 9-11. herb said when his legs went numb, he got out of the water. fire officials say he got out at the right time. trt: 14 battalion chief mark winkelman, reno fire department, "if there is a way you can reach to a patient, a person on the ice, even a dog, use the ladder, great idea, something you can reach a long ways with. if you can throw a rope to someone who can hold onto it that is a great idea. just don't want you getting into the water to the point where you are incapacitated and can't get out. fire officials say you have about 10-minutes of useful movement in cold water. just last thursday a man went chasing after his dog at manzanita lake, falling through the ice. that man was able to get out of the water before suffering any injuries. his dog did not survive. these cold

impacting grafitti removal. city officials say cold weather prevents them from using certain graffitti abatement equipment. instead, crews are using spray cans and paint rollers -- which take a lot more time to cover large areas. they say with higher temperatures in the afternoon, they hope to actively tackle the graffiti on some of the larger areas in reno. "anything above, constant temperatures above 40-45 degrees for the commercial sprayer that we do have. is ideal for us to do some graffiti abatement." another issue the city is having is the lack of man power they have to get the job done. they're currently trying to fill two positions for graffiti abatement. some local veterans are putting in some tough training to get in shape... a look at their plan for a big ride down the road... there's less than two weeks until the iowa caucuses.... which means the presidential campaign is heating up... coming up, lindsey matherly will have your complete forecast. that's next on kolo 8 news now.

precipitation today will be warm air advection /warm frontal with no cold air behind the system for california/western nevada, although the sierra will see a brief period of orographically- enhanced precip this afternoon and early evening. the back edge of the waa is evident in satellite via sharp warming just off the northern california coast. finally, snow levels are currently around 5500 feet, plus or minus a few hundred feet, over northeast california and western nevada. snow levels should remain fairly steady this morning with the warm air advection precipitation. however, snow levels should jump 500 to 1000 feet by early to mid afternoon as the precipitation

there are currently 25 veterans involved in project hero ... which is the local chapter of ride to recovery. the group meets for a one hour session two to three times a week at great basin bikes ... where they get in shape for ride to recovery events where they will cover up to five hundred miles. veterans will do stationary riding to see how much energy they're using and how fast they're going tina lemus covered more than four hundred miles last year. she says it's not all about the distance though. four life rafts deployed after the crash but say no one was on board any of them. the two choppers crashed thursday with 12 marines on board. so far, there has been no indication that anyone survived. more than 60 marines have been involved in the search, along with navy divers and county, state and federal agencies. outrage is growing over the water crisis in flint michigan. the mayor is headed to washington today to push the white house for more help. michigan's governor is poised to give his state-of-the-state address tonight. this-- as protesters call for his resignation. reid binion reports. leak since october of last year. in san diego, a terrifying site when an amtrak train crashed into an suv on the tracks, knocking the driver unconcious. a construction worker nearby saw the whole thing happen. "i see the train coming and i look on the tracks and there's a guy sitting there in an suv in the middle of the track and boom it hit him." the man was wedged so tightly against the door, he had to be cut out of the s-u-v. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. no word yet on why he was on the tracks in the first place. over a thousand demonstrators marching on martin luther king junior day yesterday-- shut down the bay bridge into san francisco, just as the afternoon rush hour commute began. traffic was backed up for miles. the protesters were marching in the wake of recent police shootings. some of them chained cars together and others sat down in traffic. california highway patrol says 25 people were arrested.

expected to hold a hearing today requesting to transfer "affluenza-teen" ethan couch's court proceedings from juvenile to adult court. the teen is still in mexico, but his mother has been extradited to the u-s. the pair fled across the border late last year ...over fears he would be found to be in violation of his probation. despite killing four people in a drunk driving accident, couch only received probation after his lawyers argued that his wealthy upbringing left him unable to distinguish right from wrong. representatives from mothers against drunk drivers will be present at today's hearing. jada pinkett smith and spike lee won't be at the oscars this year. why they say they are taking a stand and refusing to attend.

to selecting a name for its new professional soccer team. the u-s-l reno soccer league has collected more than three- thousand submissions from the public. they put together focus groups and talked to city officials. finally... they've narrowed it down to six. reno f-c ... f-c reno ... reno silver f-c ... reno city f-c ... reno united ... and reno 1868. the season won't start until march of next year... but team officials are already excited to welcome the fans.
