i'm dave lawrence. amanda is off today. lindsey joins me. warm and dry conditions as high pressure shifts to the east today. the next storm will impact the region starting friday with strong winds, rain, and high elevation snow. a cold front will bring lowering snow levels friday night and saturday. expect travel impacts in the sierra and western nevada throughout the weekend and possibly into early next week. main changes to the forecast for this morning were to increase snow totals above 8000 turning now to that daring jail break out of southern california.

people in connection with the escape of 3 dangerous inmates. the fugitives were all awaiting trial for violent crimes when they broke out last friday. 1:30 - 1:45 sheriff sandra hutchens/orange county, ca "it's every sheriff's nightmare, you never wanna have an escape. you don't want maximum security prisoners to get out of your jail." authorities believe they had outside help since the tools used in the escape were not prison-made. a 200-thousand dollar reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest of the inmates. and more arrests are expected. the leader of the armed group occupying the wildlife refuge in oregon wants his followers to stand down. ammon bundy's plea for an end to the standoff came a day after he and several followers were arrested-- and another was shot and killed by police. reid binion reports.

an attorney for oregon armed protest leader ammon bundy... ...reading bundy's statement asking followers to end their armed occupation at the malheur national wildlife refuge. "let us take this fight from here. go home and hug your families. this fight is ours for now in the courts." it came a day after protester lavoy finicum was shot and killed by police during the arrest of bundy and four of his followers. officials say finicum led authorities on a high speed chase, exited his vehicle, and reached for his waistband, where he had a gun. that's when officials say swat team members opened fire. two additional arrests related to the occupation were made in burns oregon... ...and a third in arizona. as some protesters stayed at the refuge wednesday in defiance, others left, including three men who were arrested. while ammon bundy wants them all to decamp... ...his father, nevada rancher and activist cliven bundy, disagrees. "they gave up from holding the refuge. that's their only thing that brings you guys out here."

a huge push in flint michigan to have the town's children tested in the wake of the water crisis there. this-- after the governor announced that 200 kids were found to have elevated lead levels. and officials are bracing for the possibility of a much higher tally than what blood tests have revealed so far. "every child who drank or cooked with this water was potentially exposed and thus is at risk for consequences." officials say some test results are not statistically accurate, because there's no guarantee that water samples are coming from homes at higher risk for the lead contamination. one home in the town considered to have one of the highest lead amounts is more than 200 times over the danger limit. of jus changes are coming to the police department in ferguson, missouri... after a scathing report from the u.s. justice department found unconstitutional and discriminatory practices across the city. of jus the report followed the 2014 shooting death of 18 year old michael brown. the officer who shot

death, which sparked protests across the country. the police department has agreed to overhaul it's policies in a deal reached with the justice department. under the agreement, police and police vehicles would be required to have cameras and microphones. the deal would also require the municipal court to take a persons ability to pay a fine into consideration before handing down punishment. of jus emily davis / ferguson resident 'while i think a lot of the stuff in the consent decree is going to mitigate some of the problems we have its also still important the communitys voice be heard.' butt with 'this can be a great city .. it can be a great place to live. to work and play.. but its going to take some work.' public hearings will be held in the coming days. a vote to accept the agreement could come on february 9th. today marks the 30th anniversary of the challenger tragedy. nasa will pay will tribute to the crews of apollo 1 and space

several schools here in washoe county are getting national recognition for their teaching methods. matt vaughan has more on what's setting them apart. lemmon valley elementary is one of seven schools in the district that's being recognized as a beacon school. and it's a special approach that teachers are taking with their students that's making a big impact. ... nat of chime that chime can be heard in classrooms throughout lemmon valley elementary. it's a signal for students to stop what they're doing and take a moment to reflect. which is just one small part of the learning process and overall philosophy on campus. lemmon valley elementary was one of the first schools in the washoe county school district to adopt social and emotional learning in 2013. shaffer "we talk about having strong sense of self, having empathy towards your friends, understanding how to

grown-ups can learn a thing or two from the kids at lemmon valley. social and emotional learning is currently schools in the washoe county school district to be taught in every classroom in the year. about a month from now the country will visit those beacon schools e-l and the success it's having here in our area. it's national mentoring month... and in honor of the special month... we're sharing a special pair. it's a big and a little with big brothers big sisters. this is cesar and stevie. pkg these two love hitting the floor at roller kingdom. they not only like a little roller skating...but they also have a shared love of socks! we love socks. we really like socks a lot. it's a way we can express ourselves i guess you stevie and his sock obession seemed to

that's not the only change this little guy has gone through recently. yeah he's definitely been a lot more confident doing better in school. doing real well in school actually. stevie has a lot of energy for sure. not a bad thing. but we have to do activities higher intense activities to make sure he doesn't get bored. during the summer we were going to the park a lot. stevie was learning how to ride his bike. going down hills. real fun stuff and he was able to get over a few fears i guess. and a lot of outdoor stuff. and this 7 year old has loved all the chances he's had to get together with his big. he's very nice because i don't have a big brother and he takes me fun places and i have much more fun than staying home with my mom. and cesar can tell you... it's easy to be a positive influence in a kids life. you really just set aside one day a week for a couple hours and it make a huge difference. that's what i like about it. it's not a whole day. you plan an activity once a week and you're done & it really has made a big difference in stevie, myself as well. and hopefully we can get others to help out as well with this. big brothers-- big sisters of northern
