flames. you probably saw that smoke plume for miles all across the valley. we have answers tonight on the very latest. >> reporter: firefighters do not know how exactly this started but the air was black smoke for at least 30 minutes. the fire is out and the road just reopen. fire crewslooking into exactly what was burning at this scrap metal yard. one fuel source was black tires causing the thick dark smoke. employees mentioned there was hazardous materials on-site so has met cruz came out but the materials were not a severe threat. local businesses evacuated as a precaution it is unclear how many people were affected because of the holiday. one challenge for the firefighters was water availability. there is construction in the area so two hydrants were out of service . >> it is common in a

fire hydrants being out of service. we hope that was not a fire. but we were able to get laid in the terms of the supply line quick we so it did not make much of a difference. >> at one point there were about 80 firefighters here battling this intense fire, many staying for an hour after to make sure the hotspots were put out. lindsay riser cbs news. the search is still on for a valley medical student missing at lake pleasant for about 24 hours. donna rossi is up at the lake were deputies have been searching all along the shoreline.>> reporter: no scene -- no seeing him yet . trying to take driving around in suvs hope to see him. he was last seen swimming with friends in one of the quiet coves at lake pleasant . >> there is nothing like a

high country from black canyon city. as well far north -- it is frustrating. you folks that have lived here for a while you know what i am talking about but for you newcomers at some point you are going down to 20 miles an hour then picking up to 40 miles an hour then freeway speeds and then coming bam to almost a slow crawl. that is just the way it is with that two lanes going through. it is about a 30 mile slow and go so you will have to add anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes as you try to make your way down. these are the same maps you can send to your social media friends. just send -- said they should just go to the mobile app. don't drink and drive. aaa wants you to keep said.

election right here in arizona in particular it is the race for district 5. state senator. andy biggs has won the republican primary by nine vote over christine jones. jones had been leaning this race all last week and so the final count was announced saturday morning -- 2 am. out of 85,000 votes just nine votes separated them. as we reported, we discovered that this is manager -- kicked out by helen purcell think there is no general rule that band an observer with ties to a campaign but it is generally understood that the person should be neutral when overseeing the vote counting . >> jeremy is watching the ballot be counted. he is just observing and

but putin's military might has made him indispensable . the white house is reluctant to use force and has no diplomatic backup plan . the mid-east crisis overshadowed president. obama's main mission -- to bridge tensions with china was aggressive military expansion is rattling nerves. with asia already on edge nuclear armed north korea testfired three ballistic missiles into the sea that there is very real tension behind closed doors. president. obama says he is concerned by growing anti-american sentiment here, china's aggressive military expansion and it's unfair trade practices all complicating his plan to focus us is economic and military might to towards asia.

check this out. this elk really got himself tangled up in a mess. he stumbled onto the property of the perfect person who could give him a helping hand. this happened up in pine arizona. we spoke with a woman who took hours helping this elk. >> just take a look at this video. and elk clearly in distress with a tire swing and log stuck around his antlers. deborah butler shot this video on her cell phone. >> i literally had to take a double take because i thought i am not see what i think i see in literally this poor guy had a tire swing hung and all tangled in his antlers. >> reporter: he was clearly agitated. you could hear his hopping on

this is what is known as hurricane newton. 250 miles south east of cabo san lucas. cabo san lucas looks like it will get hit pretty hard. packing wind 75 miles per hour. weakening as it moves through the north just south of arizona on wednesday but it could bring significant rainfall. take a look at the ur for tomorrow morning. afternoon starting to see some rain. around tucson and then by wednesday especially in the evening hours we will see good chance of rain fall. this could change with the track of the storm. keep a close eye on the system. look at all the rain showers expect. lasting into thursday morning especially in the high county. heaviest rain wednesday evening through thursday morning. cooler weather ahead.
