yet another suspicious fire in san francisco. we'll have the latest live from the scene. thousands pack cairo streets on what protesters are calling deadline day for egypt's president to step down. the new plan by the white house to stop the violence. high pressure holding strong. still mostly clear skies. will we see warming for the weekend? we'll tell you coming up. and even though it's friday lite, a little bit of fog, especially the bridges. and thank you so much for joining us. it is friday, february 4th. >> time now is 5:00.
another morning, another fire in san francisco's castro district. this is the fourth fire there in 24 hours and this time, it's on 18th street. let's go live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, 18th, you can see arson investigators just arrived here on the scene. apparently what happened, within about the last half hour is that there was a fire started in the doorway of this victorian home. a neighbor noticed it and was able to put it out. but the fire was apparently started from the outside. it looked like it started in a pile of trash. that is what makes it a suspicious fire at this point. and this is of course on top of the three fires that we were reporting here yesterday morning. all within a few blocks of each other. the first one yesterday was at
4:25 in a trash can. and then at act a.m., 16th street market, an apartment building caught fire, again from the outside. firefighters were able to put that out within about an hour. 17 people live there had. and they were displaced from their homes. and around 5:30 yesterday morning, a building under construction caught fire. that was at 17th. that spread next door to another building and it took firefighters about two hours to take care of this one. now the good news on the fire this morning that started again about half an hour ago is that it was put out quickly. there is a broken doorway here in this home, but that appears to be the only damage. luckily the neighbor was there to put it out. but concerning for anybody who lives or works in the castro district. we are talking about the fourth fire within 24 hours. >> all right. thank you very much. the future of egypt under discussion today at the white
house. protesters stage another day of demonstrations against president hosni mubarak. the obama administration and egyptian officials are talking about ways to end the crisis. they include the possibility that hosni mubarak would resign immediately. the administration is calling for a smooth political transition. >> the egyptian people expect a meaningful process that yields concrete changes. >> today's protest is aimed at getting hosni mubarak to leave immediately. they're calling today friday of departure. and it is a dangerous place for anti-government demonstrators. video posted online, this is pretty disturbing, shows a police van tearing through the crowds, running over a number of people. and this one shows a diplomatic car hitting several protesters. >> can i see your passports, please? we could learn today whether the oakland police chief will stay on the job.
he has been waiverring on his future in oakland since learning he did not get the top cop job in san jose. on monday, he said he would meet with the oakland mayor in the coming days. he has said he has concerns about support and resources for the oakland police department. one big concern there, the oakland police radios still aren't fixed. they malfunctioned twice this week. wednesday, officers were able to communicate with each other, but not with dispatch as they helped with a narcotics investigation. and yesterday, police officers had to use hand signals as they searched for burglary suspects. the mayor said that the glitch was fixed and it workers are still trying to figure out the problem. teacher, parents and students are joining together in a last ditch effort to save their school from closing. we understand a rally will start in just a few hours from now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.
and as you said, just a few hours from now, parents, teachers, students, all expected to rally here at the corner not far from the elementary school. their goal of course is to save silverwood from closier. it's one of seven schools in the school district that have been identified for closier because of possible budget cuts. the district will need to close a total of three schools to save about $1.5 million. and schools have been rallying to gain support to keep their schools open. still district officials say it's a painful, but necessary decision. the final decision for which three schools will be close san diego expected to come down on -- closed is expected to come down on tuesday. this rally really a last ditch effort to try and save this school. and they're hoping to an impact here. >> i think it's sad. i don't want to see it close.
nothing you can adjust to. and it's going to be tough. >> as much as i don't like to see us going through this, i love that people are that involved in their school that they come out and they want to, to have a rally. >> reporter: again, a painful but necessary decision coming down the pipeline on tuesday. here among other things, officials will look at the capacity of the school and the cost of closing it down. back to you. >> all right thank you. you take caltrain, brace yourself, it could get hard tore get to work. the agency has proposed eliminating half of its stations. the board says the cuts are necessary to help close a $30 million deficit. well, this is actually far a done deal -- this is actually far from a done deal. the board won't make a final decision on this until april.
a free ride for the homeless. starting in april, people can get free rides on the buss and lite rail. but to qualify, people must be screened by social service agencies to determine whether they're in a program to help them find permanent housing. up to 1850 stickers will be issued every three months. the county will cover the cost. time now is 5:07. another check of traffic and weather. by the time the weekend is over, i'm going to have a winter tan. >> isn't that nice. so jealous because the rest of the country is freezing. and we've had some great weather. if you can believe it, it's going to get even better. still a little chilly if you're headed out the door this morning. we are again seeing 30s in the valley. cold temperatures and patchy fog many the santa rosa area and the immediate coastline. otherwise, things looking far so far. toward the afternoon, get a load of the temperatures, yeah you, a lot of jealous folks going to be looking to
california. 70degrees today in santa rosa. 67 in fairfield. 64 in san francisco. and about 67 degrees in san jose. spectacular weather for today and it's going to get even better for the weekend. more about that in a few minutes. right now, let's get a traffic check. and we're going to go straight to 680, the only accident brewing this morning, southbound right after scott creek. it's a disabled big rig on the right shoulder. at one point, its tires were on fire. everything is out. tow trucks and chp on scene again. partially blocking the right lane. but see the green, traffic is up to speed, very, very minimal delays. if you stick to the left, you won't see the problems through there. bay bridge looking good so far. metering lights are off, up to speed across the upper deck into san francisco. the golden gate bridge this morning, traffic light, clear out. but we have a fog advisory in

it started about 2:00 a.m. in the shelter near little orchard street. smoke went throughout an open sleeping area, so 250 occupants had to leave until the smoke was blown out. no one was hurt. a small army's worth of fire power to ring in the lunar new year last night. it's a important day in vietnam please culture. they were all illegal. some spectators say they know there's a safety risk. >> so fireworks is not safe, not 100% safe. i guess if you put it that way, then i am taking a small risk. i like to have my kids experience the culture. >> san jose has a strict ban on fireworks that can carry fines and jail time, but police say they have to priorities their response to emergencies and
they simply can't stop and investigate every fireworks display. arraignment is scheduled this morning for the suspect in a double murder in san francisco. a 56-year-old is accused of shooting a man and a woman working in a souvenir shop on sunday night. he worked at a competing store. he was scheduled to be arraigned on wednesday, but that was delayed until today because he was in a hospital on psychiatric hold. it is 5:13. the son of a jailed enron executive is found dead in his dorm room. the clues fellow students are revealing now. plus, the husband of the arizona congresswoman who was shot in the head makes a big decision today, will he leave his wife's side for space? and on the golden gate bridge, a foggy start. and details on 680. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
the storm creating problems for people trying to get to the super bowl. not only that, we're just coming in to our news room, a number of flights headed to sfo that have been canceled. if you're planning to pick up someone or headed out, this is a good day to call ahead. a lot of problems around the country. i'm glad they've got a dome on the stadium. some cold air all the way down into mexico, freezing temperatures with that amazing storm system. here in the bay area, yeah, it's a little bit chilly in spots, 30s and 40s and a couple patches of fog. but by the afternoon, some spectacular weather if you're headed outside. 60s, low 70s, sunshine in the valley. inside the bay, plenty of 60s. toward the coastline, temperatures up in the 50s and even mid-60s and just a taste of things to come over the weekend. high pressure building in. a couple patches of fog along the coastline and reports of fog toward the santa rosa area.
otherwise, looking nice now and the ridge is strengthening. and overhead, we're going to see the offshore winds, traveling from the land to the sea. it will be breezy at times over the mountains tops, but otherwise, temperatures going to be warming up outside. and even today, you'll notice those temperatures popping up a good two to four degrees from yesterday's highs. 67 in san jose today. about 65 for union city. sunshine in the east bay, should crank those numbers up into the mid-60s in many spots. inside the bay, warmer, 67 in oakland. and 66 degrees in berkeley. warmest temperatures to get the down slope winds into the santa rosa area, they'll likely spike to about 70 degrees. and toward the weekend, we've got a spectacular weekend for you as we will see high pressure continue to build the offshore winds blowing, mid-70s in the warmer spots around the bay area. we're going to keep things dry
through the mid to feel week. by the latter part of the week, cooler weather is on the way. we could be talking about more rain towards next weekend. a traffic check now. how about good news. the earlier trouble spot on 680 southbound at scott creek has been completely cleared from the freeway. it was a big rig that tires caught on fire. but everything pushed off to the shoulder. elsewhere, the big check right now, the bay bridge off to a good start, friday lite, no delays to report. golden gate bridge is problem- free. no accidents, but they have a fog advisory in effect. looks like it's looking better through here, but maybe limited visibility. that was issued just after midnight. south of here into san francisco, traffic moving pretty well. in fact, 101 both directions, not a problem if you're headed southbound to sfo. working onto 80, traffic moving
well. no delays to report at 3rd street, traffic up to speed. elsewhere, road work in effect westbound 580. various lanes closed. that's in effect until 6:00. and no problems, everything moving good in both directions. and san mateo bridge, traffic light, up to speed. a live look where you can see no brake lights and traffic looking really good through there. and taking mass transit, everything ontime. no delays for bart,s a or mini. 101 in san jose, traffic is nice for this friday morning. back upstairs to you guys. >> all right. thank you. here is a look at this morning's top stories. a live look from egypt where anti-government demonstrators calling this the day of departure. they want president hosni mubarak to step down immediately there. is not a live look right now. but this is the biggest crowd since tuesday when a quarter
million people turned out. another fire in san francisco's castro district. this is the fourth fire many the area in the past 24 hours. the latest fire this morning happened outside a building on the 400 block of 18th street. a reporter will have more on that story coming up in a live report at a30:00. and will he stay or will he go? we could have a decision today from the oakland police chief. so far, he's been not committal publicly since finding out he didn't get the top cop job in san jose. he says he's concerned about support and resources in oakland and has been meeting with the mayor. the former ceo is requesting a temporary release from prison so he can attend the funeral of his youngest son. the 20-year-old was found dead tuesday night in his apartment where he was attending college. the cause of death has not yet been determined. but police say there were
prescription bottles nearby and the younger son had been upset over a split with his girlfriend. the father is serving time for fraud and other charges in connection with enron's collapse. gabrielle giffords' astronaut husband will reveal today whether he will fly in space or stay on earth. mark kelly will announce the decision today in houston. kelly has been by giffords' side since she was not shot in the head last month. kelly's twin brother scott has hinted that kelly will take the trip into space in april. >> such a decision. something he's been preparing for. >> and i'm sure they had talked about thing like this. it's 5:22. a famous fashion designer in hot water. how he tried to use the crisis in egypt to promote his spring line. plus, a chance for giants fans to get up close and personal with the team.

february 4-th. i'm sydnie kohara. good morning everyone. thank you for joining us. sit friday, february hath. -- february 4th. four fires in satisfy's castro district in 24 hours. the latest this morning on 18th street. and that's where we are live on the scene with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, all of these fires within the same neighborhood here in san francisco's castro district and all within the same time frame, the wee hours of the morning. one fire this morning. it started around 4:30 here in this victorian behind me. luckily it was outside and the only thing that was damaged it was screen. a closer look at the scene, about a half hour ago, arson investigators have been here, trying to collect whatever evidence they can. this fire was actually put out by a neighbor who smelled a plastic burning kind of smell,
came out, saw a fire, went in and got her teapot and put it out. here is that woman. >> the only thing i could grab was a teapot and i filled it up with water. and it was just, they had a screen on the front of their door, you know, just to keep the bugs out. and i guess that's what was burning and there was still just a little bit of fire on the top step. and then i put it out. and we called the fire department. >> reporter: now this fire was immediately deemed suspicious because this is on top of three fires in this neighborhood yesterday morning. the first one in a trash can behind a locked and gated area around 4:25 yesterday morning. and then at 5:00 a.m., 16th and market, an apartment building caught fire. firefighters were able to put that out within about an hour. but 17 people lived there and they were all displaced. and then at 5:30, a building under construction caught fire at 17th. that spread next door to
another building and firefighters were working on putting that one out for about two hours. but all of these fires, they appear to have been set from the outside, another reason this is looking very suspicious at this point. the good thing about this fire is it didn't appear to spread beyond that screen door, but concerning for people who live here. >> yeah, i'm sure. a lot of neighbors on edge. all right. live for us in san francisco, thank you. 250 people were forced out of their emergency shelter the san jose in the mid -- shelter in san jose in the middle of the night. there was a fire about 2:00 this morning. the fire did not spread, but the shelter was evacuated because the smoke went throughout the building. no one was hurt. 5:33. more problems for the oakland radio system this week, even after the mayor said that glitch was fixed. police say the radios failed twice. on wednesday, officers were
able to communicate with each other, but not with dispatch as they helped with a narcotics investigation, and yesterday, officers say they had to use hand signals as they searched for three burglary suspects. workers are trying to figure out what is causing the problem. in a week, three schools in the school district will be shut down. but today parents and teachers, they're still fighting to keep theirs open. we are at silverwood elementary where there will be a rally later this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and that rally just a couple hours away. people who are out here, parents, students, teachers, all expected to rally before tuesday which is the big day when school officials are expected to make a final decision about which schools will close and which will stay open in the face of deep budget cuts. all students, parents and staff will be rallying today. they're hoping their demonstration will help save
the middle school. parents say it won't be silverwood closing the they have anything to do -- closing if they have anything to do with it. >> i don't want to cecil severewood -- i don't want to cecil severewood close. and it's going to be tough. >> as much as i don't like to see us going through this, i love that people are that involved in their school that they come out and they want to have a rally. >> reporter: and the silverwood campaign has some people really involved in the community. you can see even on the block, there are signs. so this really is the final chance to make the final impact. >> live for us. thank you. caltrain riders could face service cuts and fair increases. the commuter rail has proposed

cairo this morning. they want president hosni mubarak to step down immediately. the military has been stationed at the entrance to the square. the obama administration and egyptian officials are talking about ways to end this crisis and they include the possibility that hosni mubarak would resign now. there's bi-partisan support on capitol hill for change in cairo. >> let's start a peaceful transition to a free and open society. >> the protesters are calling this a day of departure hoping president hosni mubarak will leave office today. this morning, bomb shell allegations against jp morganchase. reports say that the banking giant knew what ponzi king bernie madoff was up to and did nothing to stop it. court appointed lawyers say emails and other documents show that executives at that bank
knew of the fraud. a spokesperson denied those claims. police need your help to catch a robber. it was all caught on tape. police say he walked up to the register, lifted his shirt and flashed a gun. the cashier empties out money into a shopping bag. it happened early monday morning at the walgreens on red -- walgreens on redwood street. the crime rate in pittsburgh is at its lowest rate in at least 50 years. statistics show there were more than 2200 reports of serious crimes last year. that's a 40% decline from the previous year. reported homicides, robberies and arson were down last year. the main transit agency in the south bay is offering homeless people a free ride. starting in april, they can get free rides on buss and light rail. to qualify though, people must be screened to determine if they're in a program to help

during what would have been the busiest time of morning. no one was injured. well, you've heard of cars getting stuck many the snow, right? well, what about this, what about head first? take a look at what happened in new hampshire. this sedan skidded off the highway and then slid down an embankment. instead of coming to a stop, the car rose into the air and then got stuck standing straight up in three feet of snow. amazingly, the driver escaped with just minor injuries. cars parking vertically, craziness going on. looks like you could just push the car. >> and if you're the driver and you're there, how do you get out of the car? is this thing going to fall over or not? that's amazing. we don't have to worry about any of that today. the worst we're going to see the s a couple patches of frost and breezy -- see this morning is a couple patches of frost and breezy conditions over the
high spots. by the afternoon, plenty of sun and the temperatures heating up today. 60s and 70s showing up in the inland valleys. and even toward the coastline, mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s, mid- 60s by this afternoon. just a sign of things to come as we're looking at a beautiful weekend ahead. high pressure building overhead, you get a sense of the clouds rolling over the top of the ridge here, maybe a couple passing high clouds and the patchy fog toward the coastline right now. but by the afternoon, the fog is going to be long gone. the ridge is strengthening, warming trend in the works for today and more so over the weekend. and you get the down slope, the off-shore winds getting breezy. otherwise, we are looking good. almost spring-like around the bay area. how about 67 degrees in san jose today. and 64 degrees in half moon bay. and the temperatures rising easily into the 60s. warmer just toward the oakland
area at 67. and 66 in berkeley. north bay, some of the warmest temperatures, how about 70 in san rosa. looking out over the next few days, well, couldn't plan for a better weekend than this. beautiful sunny sky, truly super weekend around the bay area. temperatures up in the mid-70s, cooling off in toward monday and tuesday. maybe we start talking about rain as we head toward the end of next week. let's check on traffic now. >> thank you. and through the golden gate bridge for good news actually. they had a fog advisory in effect for the bridge, but looking live right now and i don't see too much fog. they have lifted the advisory, traffic cruising right along. in fact, most of the bridges are problem-free this morning. the bridge where traffic is very light. you know the usual stuff. between 80 and 101, overall not a bad ride at all. east shore freeway approach to the bay bridge, no delays,
eight minutes from richmond to the toll plaza. and traffic really light here as you approach the toll plaza. the metering lights are off. and clear across the upper deck into san francisco. no troubles on the lower deck into oakland. the san mateo bridge, business as usual. and the pass, starting to see slight stop and go conditions, the usual, typical this time of the morning. westbound through the pass. west of there, we have construction right around north livermoore, that has been picked up and cleared out of the roadway. westbound highway 4, typical. slight delays right around 45 miles per hour as you head from 8th street to summersville pass. traffic is cruising right along. if you are headed anywhere along the coast, we do have a closier to report. road work highway 1 at bean hollow, this is ongoing, 24/7, one-way traffic through there. plan for that if you're headed out to the coast. back upstairs to you. >> thank you very much.
let's take a check of today's top stories. arson investigators have been called to the scene of another fire in san francisco's castro district. this-- san francisco's castro district there. is the fourth fire in just 24 hours. a woman tells us she helped put out the flames that were burning on the screen door. in just a few hours, parents and teachers will rally to save silverwood elementary school. this is not the right video. we will get that in a second. one of several schools in the unified school district at risk of closier due to budget cuts. next tuesday, trustees will vote on which schools will be shut down. and an elementary school is back open today after two days, after the principal was shot ask killed. police say that a janitor opened fire at louisiana school on wednesday, possibly after an argument. grief counselors are expected to be onhand. two pizza shops are in the middle of a food fight.
a co-owner of one restaurant called police yesterday. she saw someone spray painting the words, go home on her building. within minutes, officers arrested two people. one is a manager at a extreme pizza located nearby. police say at least one of the suspects was drunk. the owners called the stunt childish. >> what comes around, goes around. you know, i'm here, hardworking person, just trying to succeed something nice. >> the manager at extreme pizza didn't want to go on camera, but says he regrets the graffiti and he says the two suspects acted alone. for a short time last night, drivers filled up on 39 cents per gallon at the 76 station. there was so much traffic, police are to block all the
entrances to keep the new drivers from entering. well, ford is expected to announce a major recall. turns out there's a problem with the interior door handles that could lead to the doors opening in in a crash. the recall affects about 365,000 f-150 trucks in north america. it's expected to begin around february 14th. a new record for google, receiving more than 75,000 job applications last week alone. this flood of resumes topped the previous high back in may of 2007. you might remember the company announced that it wants to hire 6,000 people this year. its facing steep competition from rivals such as facebook and apple. and delta is sending 11,000 agents to charm school. ticket counter workers, baggage and at the gates are getting training in customer service. compared to the other big
