captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, june 22nd, 2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning the search for two dangerous killers who escaped from a dangerous maximum prison has shifted back to northern new york. thor e seror ise search is refocused during the adirondack mountains after a dna match confirms they had recently been in northern new york. hundreds of officers searched a rural area near a small town of friendship. they broke out of the maximum security prison over two weeks ago. kenneth craig has the story. >> reporter: in matter of hours the manhunt has taken

authorities to multiple sites hundreds of miles apart in new york and close to the pennsylvania border. law enforcement sources tell cbs news investigators have a dna match confirming the convicted killers were in the saranac lake area within the last 24 hours. that dna was apparently found on an item in a cab than had been broken into in the area about 40 miles south of the clinton correctional facility in dannemora. late sunday night tactical teams from vermont were called in for the first time to aid in search efforts near mountain view about 30 miles west of the prison. authorities turned their attention there after investigating a credible sighting some 300 miles away in friendship, new york, near the pennsylvania border. >> aviation, canine, and special operations teams were called in tore assist with this search. >> reporter: brandy thompson said she spotted two men who resembled the convicts in her backyard. >> my heart dropped. i called the dog, grabbed my cell phone and went toward the house and dialed 911. >> reporter: as the manhunt continues to unfold authorities announce gene palmer a second

for the families and forgiveness for the families. >> it's been tough. some of us have been downright angry. but through it all god has sustained us. >> reporter: the latest groups from all over charleston have been stopping by to stand in solidarity and pay their respects. >> we should not feel any malice or discontent with what has happened but only to pray for this person who obviously needs prayers. >> reporter: parishioners were reminded more has to be done to stand up against racism in america. >> the blood of the mother emanuel 9 requires us to work and feel not only justice in this case but for those who are still living in the margin of life. >> reporter: marlie hall, cbs news, charleston. federal investigators are looking at a racist manifesto that appears to have been written by the suspected shooter, dylann roof. it includes messages of hate toward blacks hispanics, and

jew jews, and the display of the confederate flag at south carolina state house. on sunday dozens joined hands across the bridge. the crossing is named for a former state lawmaker who's a supporter of the flag. while sunday's march was while sunday's march was peaceful there are growing signs of angle over what many say is growing oppression. >> reporter: hundreds of people outside south carolina state house this weekend demanding the confederate flag be removed from the capitol grounds. >> we all know what it stands for. colored bathrooms, separate and unequal unequal hostile treatment of people, lynching and murder of people. >> reporter: anger spread across south carolina. someone spray painting a sign,

"black matters." a confederate memorial with the words black lives matter while some burned the confederate flag. while some say it's a symbol of racism some say it's a tribute to those who have fallen in the war. 1606 them didn't come home. 16 came home missing an arm and a flag. >> reporter: this weekend two republican state law firms will issue a bill that permanently removes the flag from the museum. the issue has come up on the campaign trail. jeb bush took credit for removing a confederate flag from the state grounds while governor of florida. be south carolina leader and presidential candidate lindsey graham defended his state on friday. >> that's what the state house agreed to do. >> reporter: but the two men who battled for the white house in 2012 are in agreement on the issue. mitt romney tweeted this weekend, take down the confederate flag. to many it's a symbol of hatred. to which president obama

replied, good point, mitch. this morning the taliban attacked the afghan parliament. police say the taliban set off at least one large car bomb outside the parliament building in kabul. as gunmen battled police. all six gunmen were killed. at least 19 were killed inty a sault. taliban's launched attacks on the government targets in the past. northern texas is expected to dry out today, but yesterday a father's day storm drenched an area northeast of dallas. the slow moving storm dumped more than 4 inches of rain in some areas. roads and bridges were washed out. homes were flooded and no injuries were reported. folks in central indiana are cleaning up after a strong storm knocked down trees and power lines. the severe weather started yesterday morning. thousands lost power and some roads had to be closed. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking

the extreme weather, which is headed east. >> the dominant weather play ler be a big ridge of high pressure camped out over the southern tier states. what it will do is produce a lot of heat, especially in the west and southeast and in the northern end, that's where the strongest jet stream winds are and a high source of severe weather over the first few days of the week. as with move toward sunday, a chance for significant weather, severe storms, a chance for strong tornadoes. upper mississippi valley into the great lakers. definitely a day to be weather aware for changing conditions. for tuesday the severe weather threat will head into the northeast. definitely a day to watch that changing weather. in the south it's all about the heat. triple digits continue after a very sweltering heat. even after last week it continues. even last week around, heat is possible. a few record highs. in the west by the end of the week a pattern that looks like last winter, more temps well above average and a chance for wildfire risks to increase.

i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. a suspect is back in custody this morning. the capture of travis boys follows an intense 24-hour search. he shot and killed an officer while wearing handcuffs. they don't know where he got the gun. he was spotted by a rookie police officer and arrested. defense secretary ashton carter is blasting vladimir putin for wanting to expand his arsenal. he touched down for his first nato meeting. he calls putin's recent threat, quote, loose rhetoric. him about h he questioned him about his -- >> you have more unconstrained >> you have more unconstrained powe power than any russian leader for a while. clearly you're stronger militarily. clearly you are seen to be more aggressive, although you don't like me to use that word, i suspect.

swift refuses to allow her 1989 album to be included in apple's music. swift called am's decision not to pay royalties shocking and disappointing, but less than 24 hours after swift's complaint, apple tweeted it will always make sure its artists are paid. and on "cbs moneywatch" the euro's in question as the greek debt crisis reach as critical moment and uber's new policy on drivers and passengers packing heechlt jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange. good morning, jill. good morning, alison. it may determine whether greece gets more bailout money or faces default. yesterday the greek cabinet agreed on a proposal to end the debt crisis. officials for the european union calls it a good base for promise. today greek's prime minister meets with the other 18 eu leaders. greece faces a deadline to pay a nearly $2 billion loan which as of now they cannot make.

traders will be watching closely. last week the dow gain 112 points. the s&p finished 15 points higher. the nasdaq gained 64 points. health insurance giant cigna is rejecting a takeover bid from its larger rival anthem. anthem offered $47 billion in cash and stock for cigna. the two companies have been talking since last year. cigna's board called the anthem proposal inadequate and not in the best interest of shareholders. if you plan to hail a ride from uber leave your gun at home. uber has a new rule preventing drivers and passengers having guns inside its cars. drivers risk having access to uber services. they changed their result this monday in which two drivers fired guns. >> and "jurassic world" held onto the top spot in the box office. the latest entry into the dieyno world brought in $102 million,

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. this morning colorado officials are investigating the death of a teenager apparently from the plague. they believe taylor gays con frakted the disease from a flea bite on his family's ranch. the cdc says about 700 plague-related cases are reported. the body of a former white house chef has been located the rugged new mexico mountains. walter scheib was reported missing after going for a hike over a week ago. they discovered his body near a trail late sunday. the 61-year-old ran the white house under presidents bill clinton and george w. bush.

an airline passenger is under arrest this morning accused of threatening the safety of a plane and forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. the flight from rome to chicago was aborted saturday. he was taken off the plane in belfast. the man was apparently upset about delays. >> he was an unruly passenger in the gate and belligerent, verbally abusive. >> 269 passengers and 14 crew members spent the night in belfast. many passengers were forced to sleep on the ground in the airport because the hotel was full. a former child actor who started in the "star wars" sequel is arrested after allegedly leading deputies on a chase. a south carolina sheriff says jake lloyd hit speeds over 100 hours during the pursuit. he played a young luke skywalker in a former movie "star wars" movie, "the phantom menace." when we return, back-to-back victories. 21-year-old jordan spieth
