so long, jackass. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 7th, 2015. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. the republican presidential candidates will be back on the campaign trail this morning after last night's first debate. the ten top white house hopefuls showed their combative sides. they traded barbs over hot button issues like immigration. donald trump refused to rule out a third party run. craig boss will in cleveland. >> reporter: fireworks at the start from the first primetime republican presidential debate of the 2016 election. donald trump went after the moderators as well as the other republicans on the stage. the other republicans fired back and the tone remained testy. billionaire businessman donald
trump was center stage in a debate on the fox news channel and he came out swinging. >> mr. trump -- >> reporter: he was the only republican candidate who couldn't promise he won't run as an independent. >> i'm talking about a lot of leverage. we want to win and we will win. >> he's already hedging his bets because he's used to buying politicians. >> well, i've given you plenty of money. >> reporter: the primetime exposure was a chance to get their message across. >> freedom is not free. >> we have a republican house and a republican senate and we don't have leaders that honor their commitments. >> economic growth is the key to everything, but once you have economic growth it is important that we reach out to people who live in the shadows, the people who don't seem to ever think they get a fair deal. >> reporter: republicans agreed the immigration system needs to be overhauled but disagreed on how to do it. >> we need to control our border. it's our responsibility to pick and choose who comes in.
>> we need jeb to build a wall. we need to keep illegals out. >> i also believe we need a fence. the problem is if el chapo builds a tunnel under the fence we need to deal with that, too. >> reporter: they also spared about the nsa. >> i don't trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a hug. >> the hugs that i remember are the hugs that i gave to the families who lost people on september 11th. >> reporter: a strong performance in this debate can give a candidate momentum. there are 50 weeks to go before a nominee is elected. >> the candidates attacked an iran nuclear deal and iran gets everything they want. >> reporter: the candidates also took aim at democratic front-runner hillary clinton. >> probably the russian and chinese government know more about hillary clinton's e-mail server than do the members of the united states congress. >> reporter: one of them will likely be back for the gop
y woman running on the republican side. pundants say she could now be the one to watch. and analysts giving high marks to governor john kasich who was in front of his home state crowd. there are still 50 weeks to go before a nominee is selected. >> thank you brian. donald trump didn't only lash out at his rivals on stage, he also drew applause when he spoke out about rosie o'donnell. >> mr. trump, one of the things people love about you is you speak your mind and you don't use a politician's filter however, that is not without its down sides, in particular when it comes to women. you've called women you don't like fat pigs dogs slobs and disgusting animals. your twitter account dnchts only rosie o'donnell. >> he was referring to a long term spat with a liberal entertainmenter. trump said the country doesn't have time for, quote, total
political correctness. minutes later he appeared to explain writing try to explain that to your kids. the gop political hopefuls participated in their own debate. several took aim at front-runner donald trump. >> one thing i like to remind people is back in 2007 rudy giuliani was leading the polls for a year. part of that was his celebrity. >> since he has changed his mind on amnesty, health care and abortion. i would just ask what are the principals on which he will govern. >> the dem jenner. kim kardashian was in attendance
and posted a selfie. coming up we'll speak with scott walker and john kasich. millions across the lower half of the country and the midwest face the threat of severe weather. storms are forecast today from the southeast to the southwest and into the upper midwest. hot, hue mitd air will settle in from texas to louisiana. heat indexes could exceed 110 degrees. a possible tornado caused serious damage in alabama walmart and nearby sporting goods store. the storm ripped off part of the roof and littered the inside with debris. it flipped an 18-wheeler. one person was taken to the hospital. parts of south carolina are cleaning up this morning. severe thunderstorms delivered heavy rain and wind across the northern half of the state. they brought down trees and damaged power lines in spartanburg. thousands of homes lost power. storm damage forced the north carolina zoo to close today. severe thunderstorms ripped through ash borrow thursday afternoon thoking down trees.
an exhibit's glass door was shattered. the zoo says no people or animals were injured. crews are making gains fighting the california wildfires. the massive rocky fire is 45% contained. hundreds of evacuees were allowed to return. the the fires destroyed over 100 buildings including 43 homes. it's burned 109 square miles. taiwan is bracing for a massive storm this morning. the super typhoon soudelor is on track to hit the island. the storm is going to make landfall tomorrow. it's already claimed at least two lives. millions of workers and school children have been told to stay home and china has begun coastal evacuations. a leading democrat said he's opposed to the deem with iran. new york governor chuck schumer said he will oppose the deal with iran. he said there's a risk for them

here is a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a spill in colorado sent 1 million gallons of mine waste down a river thursday. the environmental protection agency said that a federal cleanup team was working with heavy equipment when it caused the spill. officials say the spill is no threat to drinking water. the death toll from the legionnaires disease outbreak is growing. ten people have died from the disease so far in new york city and a woman died in cleveland, ohio. it's the first case outside of the south bronx from this outbreak. on the cbs "moneywatch," apple's website gets a reboot and the case of the stolen stradivarius is solved.
hena daniels is in the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, hena. >> good morning. big changes for apple online. the company has merged apple.com with the apple store. the one main site can be used for making purchases. the new streaming services has attracted 11 million new members during the recent free trial period. a message from wall street. watch for the july jobs report. the dow lost 120 on thursday. the s&p 500 fell 16 and the nasdaq dropped 83 points. there will be no more price haggling at some lexus dealerships. the automaker is introducing negotiation free dealerships. there are prices for new and used cars as well as parts and services. lexus says the strategy means that dealers have to be willing to let the customer walk away if they don't like the price. and a new hashtag campaign is trying to redefine what an engineer looks like. a 22-year-old woman was tired of
sexist comments about female engineers after she appeared in a recruiting ad for her company. she asked the people to use i look like an engineer hashtag. a rare violin has been recovered after 35 years. the stradivarius was stolen in 1980 in massachusetts. it turned up in june when a woman had it appraised. she said it belongds to longed to her deceased ex-husband. the woman voluntarily returned it to the family of the owner who died three years ago. the violin is worth $5 million. alison. >> i recently lost a stradivarius. i lost a violin. >> did you really? >> no. i wish someone lost one and it cost $5 million. that's amazing. hena daniels of the new york stock exchange. thank you, hena. when we return a cop video gone viral. allegations of intimidation as a police officer is seen pulling a gun on a man recording him on his cell phone.

in boston. surveillance video shows a man with his jacket collar pulled up being let into the museum. authorities hope identifying him in the video will break the case. >> it's terribly important. these were pieces of art that are invaluable, tremendously important to recover them. >> the paintings were stolen the next night. they include works by rembrandt, degals, monet. federal investigators believe they know the cause of harrison ford's plane crash. the national transportation safety board says a problem with the carburetor led to engine failure. ford's vintage plane hit a tree and crashed on the golf course earlier this year. no one on the ground was injured. a surprise wedding for actress jennifer aniston. "people" magazine reports she married actor justin theroux in a top secret wedding at their mansion in bel air, california. the former "friends" star was surrounded by 70 family and friends. they got engaged three years ago.

skies lit up overnight with a spectacular light show. this is santa clara valley. it was around 9:30 last night. >> there were dozens of lightning strikes in the span of 20 minutes and more have occurred this morning. this is what our reporter len ramirez saw in san jose. >> oh, whoo! >> this is unusual in our region. i was asleep, woke up to the lightning and thunder and rain. >> 4:30 on a friday. let's get you out of the gate. were you down in a run and swim in cupertino? did you see that? >> yes. we were hot, muggy and sunny. by the end of the race, driving back to pleasanton, i was on the phone until 10:30 last night with paul deanno, at one time we had 40 lightning strikes in 20 minutes and that's highly unusual but the good news with all of this is most of it was
