give it a pop. >> live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. we have breaking news in san jose tonight, a teenaged girl shot while trying to stop a guy from stealing her car. >> it happened at the corner of winfield and coleman road, that's where andria borba is right now, andria? >> reporter: not far from the oak ridge mall where we're standing, what san jose police tell us this 17-year-old got out of her car while it was running, got this to a friend's car, that's when someone came up, got in her car, stole it, she ran up to the window and banged on it, that's when the suspect in this case fired her gun, she was braised by a bullet, we're told her gun shot is not life-threatening at this point, now the car was recovered about a half mile away from here, but

got around and i saw her hanging out of the coyote's mouth. >> reporter: eva thought jasmine was gone for. >> i look up and i see this dog, a dachsund in the coyote's mouth, limp, not moving, and bloody, it looked like it was dead. >> reporter: suddenly, another dog walker sprang in to action. sue siced her dock on the coyote. >> the coyote got your dog, at that point, we're looking, i looked at my dogs and said mia, get the coyotes! >> as we ran up the hill and confronted the coyote, and got the dog, and then mia came back to me like it was rin tin tin on command, it's amazing! she's a hero! >> reporter: the coyote let go but jasmine was seriously wounded. >> the coyote clamping down on her neck as well as shaking as they try keep or kill their prey. >> reporter: what would you want to say to the owner of the dog?
>> they really want to say thank you to her and her two dogs, they saved jasmine's life, they jumped up and because of their brave actions, we're here together. today. >> reporter: jasmine has some neck injury as well as puncture wounds, but only spent a day in the hospital, she's going to be okay, thanks to the heroism of two dogs and their owners. at stern grove, i'm joe vazquez, kpix 5. back in october, a coyote killed a dog at the same park. take a good look at this guy in the video, suspected of stealing cash -- donations from a bay area nonprofit, the children's association said it happened over the weekend in the san jose office, burglar also stole other equipment, the association provides mental health services for children, teenagers and young adults. also tonight, some big changes could be coming to ride sharing services like uber and lyft. mark kelly is in san francisco to explain. mark? >> reporter: well, ken, they
want to give workers more power, as one lawyer are described it many of those workers have as few rights as workers did during the industrial revolution. >> are the desire of the platforms like uber, is to put them in a category of their own where they don't have any rights. >> reporter: and union lawyer mccracken says that power structure got not one, but two wake up calls today. seattle washington allowing uber drivers to unionize, and a new california bill that, if passed, allows all gig workers to get together and negotiate with their boss. >> when everybody's driving toward, the same outcome, which is resolving the power imbalance that exists now. >> reporter: mccracken helped california's unique bill which has the state organize the gig workers, not a union. but he has serious doubts about seattle taking the traditional union path. >> it's really impractical, to say that a union would remit --

earlier this year, santa clara count officials clocked a 40% spike? carpool cheats on their roadways. >> i personally stopped should be in the afternoon who got a ticket from a different chp officer gentleman you see people cheating the system, it makes you upset. >> these are people that have probably been doing this everyday for months or maybe even years before they got caught. >> reporter: but traffic being what it is, sometimes you can't help but be tempted. >> all the time! [ laughter ] >> $500 ticket, you don't want to pay that. >> we made two carpool spots, neither of them had their driver's licenses on them. >> reporter: phil matier, kpix 5. >> special units to catch carpool cheaters but it can be a challenge since the traffic on the lane tends to move faster than other lanes. the rush is on to get the holiday packages in the mail, today was the last day to send letters and gifts by standard mail for guaranteed delivery by christmas, it was the busiest day of the year, for post offices like this one in san jose. 28 million pieces of mail
expected to flow through three processing centers in the bay area alone, nationwide, post offices handled an estimated 610 million pieces of mail today. mandatory drone registration rules were announced by the faa kpix 5's devin fehely on the regulations you need to follow before liftoff. >> reporter: some drone owners like kim say that registering their aircraft would be what's need to instill a sense of responsibility in an industry that has taken off na recent years. >> the motivation in creating the registry is to give drone pilots credibility what they're doing, a lot of people go to the store, buy something and fly it in spaces where they shouldn't necessarily be flying, putting others at risk. >> reporter: a newly release report for the centers of study of a drone found an increasingly number of close calls between
drones and aircraft. pilots reported more than 900 incidents involving drones to the faa in the past two years. but more than 300 considered close calls. and that's what the registry is trying to curve. starting december 21, the faa will require anyone with a drone weighing a half pound up to 55 to register it with the federal government. failing to do so could result in the fine of more than $27,000, as well as possible criminal prosecution. drone enthusiasts say the registry will prevent more draconian regulations that could clip the wings of an industry whose popularity is soaring. >> take five minutes for drone and give the faa the tools and the means they need in order to be able to properly regulate unmanned operations and flight. >> reporter: in san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. well, tonight, amazon pulling hoverboards after too many scenes like this, there have been 11 reports of hoverboards catching on fire in
