to clinch. good morning, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. crews are fixing the sinkhole that turned one family's car ride into a rescue mission. kpix 5's anne makovec is live where the ground gave way and crews are still patching up the problem. >> you can see mission street is closed between new montgomery and 2nd street. there's the sick hole. it is 12 feet by 5 feet wide and nine feet deep. repairs are set to begin again at dawn. this hole opened up at 5:30 last night and the car partially fell in. there was a family inside and rescuers told them to just stay put until they could secure the precariously stuck car so it wouldn't fall in. >> what was the reaction when they were told you have to stay in the car? >> they were shocked! they would tell someone to stay

inside a clearly dangerous situation. reporter: crews towed it away. now they have to figure out the cause of the sinkhole, possibly a broken sewer line. it was built in 1875. >> old system there, anne. what other factors will they be looking at? >> reporter: at any recent road repairs if that might have played a factor. perhaps things were patched up well. they are also going to take a look at what kind of contracting work may have been done. how the age of the sewer line is a factor. >> thank you, anne makovec in san francisco. 5:01. what's happening with weather? >> ilike looking at the reporters out there on live reports. she looks beautiful as usual. the banner tape was moving. the winds are up to 10 miles an hour. inland up to 16 miles per hour.

when you do weather you see things through different eyes. it's overcast. temperatures in the 40s in the north bay. 54 redwood city. that's the scene. that's the deal. that's our satellite and radar. you see the clouds stacked up and just hanging very tight to the immediate seashore saturating the bay even the central valley socked in. partial clearing at the coast with 60s. you will feel the difference around the peninsula up to 83 degrees in los gatos, 82 san jose through santa clara. east bay 85 in brentwood. i know you felt it was warm yesterday. today again ample sunshine in concord in the low 80s. 60s at the immediate seashore and stinson beach and bodega bay with a pretty good wind out of the southwest 10 to 20.

80 napa. clearlake 85. pollen report coming up. time to check the roads right now. we are accident-free on 580 but there's extra volume westbound towards 680 this morning from the altamont pass. we are seeing the usual slow- and-go conditions westbound out of tracy to greenville speeds probably around 35 miles per hour through there. no major delays connecting to 680. golden gate bridge looks good no delays out of marin. easy ride into san francisco. san mateo bridge a great start. free-flowing 880 to 101. roadwork on the lower deck of the bay bridge out of san francisco to the east bay. use mass transit. everything is on time. no delays. a sinkhole in san francisco at mission shut down between 2nd street and new montgomery. use folsom, howard or market to get around it.

right now, no delays on 880. nimitz clear northbound into downtown oakland, southbound no delays into hayward. that's a look at traffic. back to you. new this morning, golden gate ferry is getting a $2.2 million boost from the feds. the grant will go toward upgrading two ferries and landing facilities. changes will include new ramps, floats and other terminal improvements. the ferry boat renovations will be completed over several years. the university of california is expected to vote today on a new policy that aims to protect student athletes. it would nearly triple the number of student athletes who would be guaranteed financial aid to continue their studies in the event of a career ending sports injury. san francisco is the site of a battle between oracle and google. testimony started yesterday with a case with billions at

at least 10 people are hurt and homes flattened after wild weather in kentucky. look at this. the damage from a tornado in

graves county. cars buried in the rubble. several power lines down in the area. the twister that did the damage was caught on camera. >> look at that! >> the tornado seemed to slice through part of town kicking debris into the air. police say that none of the injuries are life-threatening. in southern oklahoma damage from another tornado stretches for miles. homes are destroyed, two people killed. may is prime season for tornadoes in the area and there's a chance for severe weather again later this week. a tornado did inspire a magical moment though when two colorado teens posed for a prom picture. charlie and allie took shots at the dance but it was this pick with the tornado in the background that has gone viral. the severe storm actually delayed the start of prom by 45 minutes. now charlie is modest about the kodak moment they shared as mother nature went wild. >> another prom picture. >> but one with a huge tornado

but again, right now it causes problems this morning as folks go to work in san francisco. use howard, folsom or market as an alternate. anne makovec is live at the scene and will continue to bring us more information, updates, throughout the morning. elsewhere on the roads if you are heading into san francisco later on, don't forget giants are in town. first pitch 12:45. a day game. so you'll see delays along the 280 extension and on the bay bridge heading into san francisco. right now we have some slight delays on 580. folks headed towards 680 dublin interchange. so extra volume no accidents or incidents. that's the good news. but east of there "super commuters" are experiencing their usual slow-and-go conditions westbound 580, 205 and a break at the dublin interchange. easy out of marin county this morning. no troubles along 101, southbound or northbound. in fact, we also checked santa rosa conditions now and traffic looks good along 101 so if you are traveling south of there heading into san francisco you shouldn't have any delays

toward the golden gate bridge. most of our bay area bridges are very quiet right now. that's true of the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge out of the east bay towards the peninsula traffic is very light right now. in fact, san mateo bridge only 13 minutes to go between 880 and 101. no troubles on 880 itself. bay bridge starting to load up a bit. we're seeing extra volume and so far traffic is okay across the upper deck into san francisco. that's your morning drive. roberta, i did have to use my windshield wipers this morning. >> you had localized drizzle. it was more of a thin overcast over the bay bridge. it was overcast. once you hit the coast you pick up a little bit of drizzle. where am i this morning? [ laughter ] let's look at the embarcadero. all lit up for our golden state warriors. temperatures 49 degrees in santa rosa, 55 in oakland. winds up to 16 miles per hour out of the southwest. we have thin overcast

temperatures going up inland. stronger west and southwest breeze. and we do have the potential of rain showers next week. we'll get to that seven-day forecast of here's dave. necessary napa this morning reporting 48 degrees. he says he could see some stars poking through the very thin cloud layer. let's look at it with our futurecast. so you can play along at home and try to figure out, we'll have sun in your neighborhood right there. some clouds still hanging out towards pacifica into the sunset district by lunch hour. inland sunshine and temperatures warmer inland away from the bay. tomorrow we see the return of the marine layer early. high pressure key component but it's very weak. so temperatures not topping off in the 90s. but getting there in ukiah at 88, sacramento, stockton into davis, 87 degrees. we have a chance of a thunderstorm in yosemite today. otherwise 91 degrees in fresno. today's highs average around the seashore. san francisco about 3 degrees

above average. san jose the average high 75, but instead flirting with 80 degrees backing through willow glen into santa clara all the way into alviso. east bay 85 towards discovery bay and brentwood and 78 in santa rosa. pollen report, olive trees are coming into play. the pollen still medium to high. i don't know, it's one of the worst allergy seasons in recent years. here's the extended forecast. we have additional warming on thursday. cooling down for the weekend in the 70s. daytime baseball madison baumgarner on the mound for the good guys. skies clearing and temperatures of 64 degrees. always take a jacket to at&t park. >> and your gloves. the brush around a sinkhole opens up putting a family and an suv in danger. the repairs under way. >> clear the brush around your house. more on the important inspections that start today's. >> we are forecasting warmer weather today. but wait until you see what's in store for the weekend. >> and from the traffic center, we have delays at the bay bridge, details coming up. >> good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, may 11. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. crews are repairing a sinkhole that nearly turned one family's drive into a disaster. kpix 5's anne makovec is live where the ground collapsed and a family had reason to panic. anne, what's the latest? >> reporter: the sinkhole is still here. this is mission street between second and new montgomery. that hole is 12 feet by 5 feet wide. it is 9 feet deep. repairs are set to begin again this morning at dawn. the hole opened up at 5:30 last night. and the suv partially fell in.

there was a family inside. and rescuers say they had to be strategic about how to get them out. >> people had to stay inside to make sure the weight didn't distribute unevenly where the car would fall further into the hole. >> reporter: it was a very precarious situation but crews eventually got ropes around the vehicle and pulled it out towed it away. they now have to figure out what caused the sinkhole. it looks like it was possibly a broken sewer line. it was a brick sewer line down there that dates back to 1875. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> how long will the road be closed? >> reporter: the road is going to be closed through at least today so at least until tomorrow morning's commute. it will affect both morning and

evening commutes. the mayor of san francisco is calling for $17.5 million to fund a program to reform the police department. mayor lee's proposal is in response to protest the and calls for police chief greg suhr to be fired. the incidents include the fatal shootings of suspicious and text messages sent between some members of the police department. four journalists may have been injured in one of the san francisco protests. they happened friday during protests in support of the "frisco five" hunger striker. demonstrators swarmed san francisco city hall and some caused damage to the building. the sheriff's department is looking into the matter. >> two alameda county sheriff's deputies are charged with the beating of a suspect. luis santamaria is shown with deputy paul weiber hitting a

suspect with batons. stanislas petrov had a concussion and broken hand in the november incident. the charges are assault under color of authority, battery with serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon. the alleged offenses happened in a san francisco alley following a high-speed chase. san francisco district attorney george gascon says that it took six months to file charges because his staff had to collect medical records and enhance the surveillance video. oakland is making sure its weeds and brush don't spell trouble in a fire. crews are starting their annual vegetation inspections next week to prevent fires. officials say the rain we got this winter helped spur the growth of plants ones that could serve as a tinderbox if a fire hits the oakland hills. crews say inspections happen once a year but homeowners need to be in compliance every day. time now 5:33. so roberta, tomorrow is national "bike to work" day. >> yeah. >> are we going to have good

there are alternates in place. you can use folsom, howard or market. keep in mind it is affecting muni. the 14r will be reresulted as a result so plan for that. the rest of mass transit is on time. accident westbound 84 between ruby hills and pidgeon past east of 680. a big rig is involved. no word of injuries. bernie sanders has locked up another state in the presidential primaries. he won the democratic contest in west virginia yesterday beating hillary clinton 51-36%. sanders gained just five delegates on clinton who did little campaigning in the mountain state. on the republican side, donald trump won west virginia with 77% of the vote. he has no active opponents. trump also won in nebraska which had a republican primary yesterday. john kasich and ted cruz were still on the ballot in both states even though their campaigns are suspended. with trump and clinton so likely to be the party's nominees, those two are

macy's also owns bloomingdale's. the number of job openings rose in march a sign that the labor market is still strong even though there was a slowdown in april. the fda will soon reevaluate what constitutes healthy when it comes to food labeling. they will reassess the nutrition content claims. they allow the use of the word healthy on certain package but has to meet specific criteria. >> jill, donald trump now the presumptive gop candidate. we hear that he has inspired a new app. what's this all about? >> reporter: trump's wall. that's the name of the app. it's now in the top 5 on apple's app store. the goal is to build a wall. it's not on the u.s./mexico border, it's in front of the white house. while you're building you will hear some trumpisms, like it's "lyin' ted" and if the wall falls over, you can probably guess, trump will tell you, you

killed darosa. >> there was a pregnant lady who came out holding her stomach. then a guy was stabbed in the chest. >> it appears that but for the actions of the deputy sheriff, there may very well have been other victims. >> police are trying to determine a motive for the attacks. stoned driving is becoming a bigger problem across the country. a new aaa study found that deadly accidents in the state of washington have doubled since marijuana was legalized in 2012. but coming up with a test is going to be more difficult than a breathalyzer test used to detect blood alcohol levels. >> biologically, cannabis and alcohol are different. i think policymakers trying to do the right thing are trying to establish something like a .80 for cannabis. there's not science to support it. >> since people react to marijuana differently it's tough to come up with fair and consistent drug driving guidelines. east bay m.u.d.

a federal judge says no to the merger between office depot and staples. staples was planning to acquire office depot for $6.3 billion. but the federal trade commission says the merger would have given the two companies too large a share of the office supply market. staples released a statement saying it's extremely disappointed at the decision but it does not have plans to appeal at this time. walmart is suing visa. it says that the credit card company's method for chip debit cards is not secure enough. walmart filed a lawsuit in new york supreme court saying that visa lets customers use just a signature to verify transactions with chip debit cards and that payments using p.i.n. numbers are safer. it also is less expensive for the retailer. no comment from visa. kids live the light-up sneakers -- love the light-up sneakers. but one pair lit up on fire. the parents think the lithium battery that powers the shoes may be to blame. it was in the back seat of a
