this masked intruder ransacd fremont live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> this intruder ransacked apartments and died moments later. tonight the danger that cost him his life. betty yu with the surveillance video you will see only on kpix 5. betty? >> reporter: the family that shared this surveillance video only bought the camera days before. they were afraid that workers would steal from them and never imagined what you would see. >> reporter: with a mask over his face the burglar knew he was in a dangerous face. using the flash light he goes
through the consul. he stole electronics. he walks into bedroom after making a stop in the kitchen. he spends 40 minutes in the apartment and turns up back in the living room. all the while ignoring warning signs that no one should be inside. the apartment complex was being fumigated for bedbugs and covered with a tent. he hops out the window but he didn't get far. >> he had labored breathing and sweating. and he wasn't able to communicate well, clear. >> reporter: police say officers found him outside the complex. after a 911 call. he died at the hospital and the coroner's office identified him as a 24-year-old. >> i can't believe that person who was in our apartment is dead. >> reporter: before he collapsed he ransacked her
apartment. not far from where he was caught on surveillance video. police also found a backpack with goods near a garbage can around the time the burglaries happen and they hope they belong to the victims. live in fremont, betty yu, kpix 5. crazy wind fueled a couple fires across the bay area today. three homes were damaged. neighbors told sharon shin they never seen anything like it. . >> the flames lit up several backyard fences. >> i have never seen anything like this before in my life. >> reporter: emergency crews say the fire started as a 5 to 7-acre grass fire along the trail behind the homes. flames threatened 15 homes. 10 got evacuated. >> spread from house to house.
next thing you know that car was on fire. the backyard was on fire. that tree was on fire. it traveled to this house. that house and that house. >> i woke up, tried to put the fire out. saw the fire was too strong for me to put out so we called 911. >> reporter: police pounded on doors, some were sleeping. >> she grabbed her kids and ran out. >> reporter: 75 firefighters battled 20 to 25 miles per hour winds. >> we had embers. we didn't have everybody on scene yet. >> reporter: in the end flames came yards from most homes. no one was injured but one house was destroyed. his house sustained major damage. >> no one was in the house so we feel blessed. we will get back. >> reporter: and a third home,
a garage got burned. most of those who were evacuated were r back home -- are back home tonight. 10 people are homeless and they are getting help from the red cross and the salvation army. >> reporter: this is what is left of an -- this is what is left of this. no one was hurt. but 27 people there are homeless tonight. live now to sfo. the wind is so strong right now, travelers are facing flight delays of up to 90 minutes. snow and lots of it caused a bunch of crashes and shut down part of i-80 tonight. the freeway is back open now but chains are required. and we could see rain tomorrow? >> yeah. so many outdoor plans, the weekend before memorial day weekend and part of your weekend will be wet. snow in the sierra. thunderstorms in the central valley. things are calming down. the wind is calming down as
well. 13 inches of snow in the sierra just today. eureka, that is the next wave of rain that will hit the bay area. tonight less wind. san jose 6 miles per hour. one of the windiest spots, fairfield, 16 miles per hour. half of what we saw last night. only part of the weekend will be wet. hour by hour, which hour looks the wettest coming up. >> thank you. hard to imagine that somebody could commit a murder on a b.a.r.t. train and then just vanish but that is what happened. five months now. and tonight christin ayers has the sketch police want everyone to see. >> reporter: this authorities say is the face of a killer. the first sketch of a man who b.a.r.t. police shot a man to death at west oakland b.a.r.t. station last january.
the man left the station and seemed to vanish. >> seemed odd how he did that, walked away. >> reporter: surveillance video taken in the b.a.r.t. station shows the man before and after the murder. he has distinct walk. a thin mustache, and riders worry five months after the murder the sketch comes too little too late. >> didn't they have the sketch before now? [ indiscernible ] >> i feel like they took too long sending out the sketch and they should have send out the surveillance video earlier and had a sketch available sooner so they could have a better chance of catching the guy. >> reporter: there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. police want anyone who recognizes the suspect to call them. christin ayers, kpix 5. tonight we are learning about two oakland police
officers who resigned during a sexual misconduct investigation. kpix 5 confirmed one of the investigation is terrell smith. the other officer is james taai. the investigation began last year after police found a suicide note naming several officers who were involved with a police dispatcher's daughter. acting san francisco police chief toney chaplin is promising major changes. andria borba is in the news room. the chief wants to tackle the "r" word right away. reform. >> reporter: that's right. acting san francisco police chief toney chaplin was pushing for reforms before his appointment. he is promising the reforms will be historic. >> reporter: in front of cameras and next to the heads of police commission, acting san francisco police chief toney chaplin, layed out his
plans. >> reforms. >> reporter: the process of reforming the department began under greg suhr and nearing its conclusion. first up rolling out body cameras. >> so that we have another set of eyes on the officer involved shooting we have been discussing. i think it will be a huge thing to help us out. it won't solve everything but it will give us another look. >> reporter: the use of force policy. mayor ed lee -- [ indiscernible ] direct result of yesterday's shooting of jessica williams. >> moving cars, that bis one o the first things is prohibit the shooting into vehicles. that is one of those things, that is basic, part of over all reforms. >> reporter: that is a change the president of the police officer's association disagrees with. siting reports jessica williams
was driving a stolen car. >> lives were in danger and some say the individual was not carrying a weapon. behind the wheel of a 4,000- pound automobile that is weapon if that weapon is going to run over a police officer and kill them. >> reporter: acting san francisco police chief toney chaplin says the reform push will be historic. >> i think that is one of the biggest changes in the san francisco police department in 30 years. >> the chief said he would unveil reforms as soon as next week. andria borba, kpix 5. frightening momes that white house. a secret -- moments at the white house. a secret service officer and agents surrounded the white house, guns drawn, the shooting happened outside a check point. a man walked up and raised a weapon. they said officers gave numerous commands to drop the firearm. when he failed to comply he was
shot once. he is hospitalized with critical injuries tonight. the shooting is the latest in a string of incidents at the white house. in 2014 a man scaled the fence. to the mystery of the egyptair disaster. tonight we know the flight transmitted messages detecting smoke on board. minutes later the plane vanished from radar. >> reporter: in the eastern mediterranean sea today the first signs of egyptair flight ms804, crews discovered body parts, luggage and seats. and from above they spotted this. believed to be a mile long oil slick where the plane went down. search teams are looking for more wreckage and also for the black boxes. it won't be easy.

>> going the other way. walking southbound. >> reporter: made up of experts in surveillance, going tay and night. >> trying to think of new ways to blend in. to do surveillance. to be undetected by the criminal. >> reporter: by car, bicycle and on foot. playing cat-and-mouse with robbers. >> they are going to hit this car. black jacket. trying to break the window. >> reporter: officers spot these two suspects checking out cars up and down. and these two doing the same. a lot of times the thieves will target tourists driving in their rental cars. especially suvs like this one that have cargo areas in the back. any tourist will tell you a smash and grab is not a great welcome. >> you feel violated. your property has been gone
through. been taken. >> reporter: often times suspects arrested don't spend time behind bars for very long even though they build solid cases, judges will reduce felonies to misdemeanors. >> it is frustrating. we are -- you know, putting together solid cases where we watch them commit the crime. >> reporter: so he waits it out. videotaping suspects breaking into cars multiple times, building evidence before an arrest is made. getting justice could be tough. >> they go into the court system and come out quickly and we see them committing the same crime. >> reporter: he turns his frustration into motivation. he will be on the job till the break ins stop. >> i take it personally. >> reporter: on the streets of san francisco, kpix 5.
