6:00 am
be a while until things clear up. good morning. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. we have live team coverage of the storm. anne makovec and roqui theus will have everything you need to know about the mess on the bay bridge but first, let's go to roberta who has been tracking the storm all morning. >> it has been raining consistently for the past 12 hours. good morning, everybody. this is our live hi-def doppler radar. at this particular time we have activity offshore going to be moving onshore. north bay now, you can see anywhere you're going to be commuting from whether it's healdsburg, guerneville, petaluma, mill valley, all the way into the golden gate bridge, it's definitely a wet morning commute there. meanwhile let's go to the eastern portion of our bay area. you know when you head out of walnut creek, into san ramon heading towards that 580/680 corridor, it's always a crawl towards the sunol grade. add in rain and it's going to be slow this morning.
6:01 am
rain showers over the peninsula, daly city, and as we head over towards the south bay campbell and los gatos, you, too are hearing raindrops on the rooftops. let's pull this on out so you can take a look at where the rain is coming from. it's off the pacific ocean. typically this time of the year, we see rain showers from the north to the south. but meanwhile, this time we are seeing it from the west to the east and lifting to the north. there's our hi-def doppler radar. what we're taking a look at mao is this huge cluster of rain immediately off the coast. this is heading directly towards the north bay and the city of san francisco within the next couple of minutes! and when you see orange on your tv screen, that could be the risk of a thunderstorm activity! so we'll keep you posted on that. we have seen over 250 lightning strikes around the bay area in the overnight hours. meanwhile, live weather camera looking out towards a very wet golden gate bridge, air temperatures are balmy in the 50s and in the 60s. but the winds are under 10 miles per hour. that is the only weather feature that really did not
6:02 am
materialize associated with this warm front passing through the bay area. the lack of a wind. but that's good. haven't seen any downed trees or power lines. temperatures today with the rain showers tapering off and only a spotty afternoon shower in the 50s and 60s, and even the 70s to the south. we have the timing of your second storm that's going to impact your weekend coming up. all right, that rain could cause a lot of problems on the roads this morning. >> it could be a slow drive because it is slick. kpix 5's anne makovec is tracking conditions live on the toll plaza. how is it? >> reporter: i want to say right off the bat that if you are heading to the bay bridge from san francisco, the entrance near first street is blocked right now. so take an alternate. we'll have more information from roqui in a little bit. i'm on the other side of the bay bridge now and traffic is moving slowly. roberta has been talking about the storm being tropical which is good. it's warm. it's not windy. and here is a look at the
6:03 am
traffic. again it is backed up. the roads are wet. but there's not a lot of puddles out here right now and that's because there's already been so much traffic that's moved through here that a lot of that water is moved off of the road. still, you're going to want to leave some extra time for your morning commute. here's some of the footage from last night's rainy commute. this is what it looked like from the inside of one of our crew's vehicles. cars splashing through puddles, windshield wipers and umbrellas all out. chp has responded to dozens of accidents because of the roads, a lot of driving going too fast for conditions. for now, the rain has been falling for the past 12 hours. so we have had plenty of rain, plenty more to come over the next few hours. let's get right to roqui theus for more on that big accident blocking the entrance to the bay bridge from the san francisco side. roqui. >> yes, thank you, anne. let's talk about it right now.
6:04 am
san francisco is in chaos right now! if you are trying to get from san francisco to the east bay, let me tell you how to get there without using the bay bridge. the san mateo bridge is your best alternate if you want to take 101 or 280 south to highway 92. now let's talk about that big rig crash blocking the entrance to eastbound 80. the crash is at the beginning of the lower deck of the bay bridge. it is a big rig jackknifed blocking four lanes. only the right lane is open. and because of that jackknifed big rig, you have fuel leaking down into the on-ramp shutting down the on-ramp, as well. now, first street is closed but right lane is open. essex and fifth are closed. they are being diverted at fourth and coming back on at sterling. this will take hours to open up. this is involving a big rig and we know those take a while to open up. now, if you want to avoid the roads altogether again, take san mateo bridge or if you want to take the golden gate bridge
6:05 am
to the richmond/san rafael bridge, that is another alternate, as well. now let's move over to oakland side. we have a crash southbound 880 at 5th street is an overturned car off to the shoulder. but as you can see in the area cars moving at just 17 miles per hour heading to the maze. and if you want to avoid all the roads, that's definitely a great suggestion here. mass transit all on time. roberta is busy with the rain to talk about. >> roqui, i'll take that. thank you. in pacifica crews are watching for forceful waves and heavy rain as they work to protect the coastline. kpix 5's maria medina has the latest from pacifica. >> reporter: in case you can't see that it is raining, we are going to show you how much water has checked on our live truck just the last hour here. they are concerned about minor flooding. you can see a little bit of ponding in the street. not very dramatic.
6:06 am
this is just the beginning of the storms this weekend, right? so they are concerned about the coastal bluffs right down the street from me. they saw a lot of erosion there during the el nino storms earlier this year. the city even red-tagged an apartment building demolished another building before it went over the cliff and declared a state of emergency. we also saw a breach of the seawall during one of those storms and public works crews told us yesterday that they have those repairs nearly complete and they say with this storm, they are going to stay on top of things. >> what we have been doing maybe over the last three or four months is preparing for a winter storm and stuff and that involves keeping and monitoring our coastal bluffs along with our seawalls, catch basins, spillways, making sure there's no debris flow in our creeks, that kind of thing. >> reporter: and so what they are concerned about are those heavy rains during a storm or back-to-back storms.
6:07 am
they say those heavy rains really saturate the ground and start seeing erosion. back out here live you can see the surf here in pacifica really starting to pick up. they say they will have extra crews here on standby throughout the weekend just in case things get bad. live in pacifica, maria medina, kpix 5. ... federal safety investigators are in new york today to investigate the runaway incident involving the plane of vice-presidential nominee mike pence. [ pause ] [ no audio ] >> have an emergency in the airport. we are getting help for you. >> the charter jet carrying the indiana governor slid off the runway last night while coming in for a landing. the aircraft came to an abrupt stop in the grass on the side of the runway. once the plane stopped, pence walked to the back to check on the press and then spoke with first responders outside. no one was injured. the current vice president may already have a spot in the

6:13 am
good morning. welcome to your friday. your time check now is 6:13. take a look at your tv screen. this is our live hi-def doppler radar. it isn't this wonderful, these are beneficial rains that continue to drift across the bay area. it's a rainy friday. i'll talk about when the rain will end and when the second storm will roll into the bay area. we have weather and traffic in less than four minutes. california is experiencing fewer problems than most other statewide health insurance ex- changes. a new analysis from the ap found that california is one of nine states where customers can choose between at least three health plans. earlier this month, it was estimated that more than a million people in 32 states would have to find new coverage

6:16 am
[ laughter ] >> dribbling out on the roads? >> um -- not quite. yeah. i guess could you say that. but we have a pretty serious situation here. chp traffic issued an alert for this eastbound 80 crash that's involving a big rig. it's jackknifed at the beginning of the lower deck and leaking fuel on to the on-ramp so the on-ramp is officially closed right now and it is still blocking four lanes. only the right lane is getting by. first street is closed, essex is closed, 5th street is closed and those are the on-ramps to the eastbound 80 to the eastbound side of the bridge here. it's going to take about two to three hours to clear this out and as you can see, traffic is moving at just 26 miles per hour. it's also slow on the westbound side, as well. now, the important part of this, how do you avoid it? we are suggesting the san mateo bridge. you can take 101 or 280 south on to highway 92 here and here's a look at that slow- moving traffic into the peninsula but if you are heading on the eastbound side you're looking good actually. 880 to 101 westbound will take
6:17 am
you about 20 minutes. but expect a much easier drive on the eastbound side. now moving over to the golden gate bridge, take the golden gate bridge into the richmond/san rafael bridge. it looks good on the bridge here and on the richmond bridge but we don't have a live look at that right now. let's take a look at mass transit throughout the area. all mass transit is on time. roberta? >> thank you, roqui. good morning, everybody. i have been taking a look at the rain totals over the past 12 hours and we have already seen up to three-quarters inch of rain in san francisco. heftier amounts to the north of the north bay. right now see this area of yellow and orange? this is a pretty moderate cell that's now "pushhhhing" and lifting into the north bay. that orange has the potential of producing a thunderstorm. and we did see some lightning strikes off the coast of san francisco in the overnight hours. 250 lightning strikes. okay. right now, moderate rain
6:18 am
pushing into the petaluma area. east bay, it's from antioch into bethel island, brentwood you have some light rain showers. discovery bay a little void of it right now but all of this is all the way into the concord, clayton and walnut creek. we are buying a break into the peninsula but in south city we see light rain and in the south bay, light rain is "pushhhhing" out of sunnyvale, cupertino and campbell making tracks towards downtown san jose into the rose garden district and in willow glen. all this activity is subtropical so it's not cold. it's very warm. very juicy. all this rain has been lifting out of the pacific ocean up in a northeast direction. it's wet at the golden gate bridge and definitely slippery when wet. temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. again, very mild out the door and as you get the kids ready for school doesn't have it layer them up. it's a moderate to light rainfall at this particular time. it looks like temperatures with the 50s and 60s, we do have that calm wind. this is the only thing that hasn't materialized with this
6:19 am
storm. the winds. they have been relatively light. it will be 5 to 15 during the afternoon hours when the rain tapers off. we'll still see a spotty shower. we'll keep the chance of a thunderstorm only in the morning forecast. it will be cloudy tonight a breakthrough saturday. and then a cold front moves in on saturday night through your sunday. this is beautiful. it's our satellite-radar. it indicates that this is the plume of moisture that drifts all the way back to the eastern pacific tapping into subtropical moisture. that's why it's so showery in nature as you head out for your commute but then upstream we have an area of low pressure that he a cold front that's going to impact sunday. here's your lunch hour. it will be mostly cloudy with just the stray shower. here's your evening commute. again, a little bit of light activity out towards the eastern foothills of our east bay and lifting into the central valley. otherwise we'll have that break. here's your sunday morning. might even be able to get out for a bike ride before the cold front comes from the north. this slices to the south. this will override the warm air

6:30 am
concerned about with this storm. >> a series of storms in the bay area. we'll talk about the weekend. >> and we have a heavy commute into san francisco and a very bad one headed out of san francisco into the east bay an update on the traffic alert on eastbound 80. good morning, it is friday october 28. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:30. it's been a soggy morning raining all over the bay area and we are seeing big problems on the commute. >> and as roqui said, mentioned earlier, the rain is already causing a lot of problems on the roads so let's check that. >> yes. thank you, guys. okay. traffic is stopped in san francisco if you are heading to eastbound 80. eastbound 80 a big rig is blocking four lanes. the right lane is open. it is leaking fuel on the first and 5th street on-ramps. so those two on-ramps are
6:31 am
closed. also closed the essex and sterling on-ramps and this is going to take at least up to two to three hours to open and that's at least because this could take much longer. you know how long those big rig crashes take to clear. now, moving over to an alternate route because you will definitely want to avoid this altogether, here's a look at the san mateo bridge and a live look at the -- we can't even see it because of the rain. 880 to 101 westbound will take you 18 minutes. eastbound the entrance into the east bay shouldn't take too long and it's moving if you can see past the raindrops here. now let's tank a look at another alternate. golden gate bridge into the east bay both directions good. you can take golden gate bridge to the richmond/san rafael bridge if you are heading into the east bay. so a couple of good alternates but you will definitely want to avoid eastbound 80 from san francisco into the east bay right now. bay bridge toll plaza maze to

raining here for quite some time. this is just the beginning of what's to come. now, what they are really concerned about are the coastal bluffs just down the street from me. that's where they really saw some erosion during the el nino storms this year. it caused the city to declare a state of emergency. they red-tagged one apartment building and they demolished another one before it went over the cliff. we also saw a breach of the seawall here as well and city crews they tell us that they have those repairs nearly complete and they say, you know, with this storm all they can do is just really stay on top of things. >> i been out here for many years. we always prepare for the worst and hope for the best. this storm here, we are concerned about the amount of water in a short period of time. we are looking at maybe three- quarters inch which could, you know, cause some minor flooding. >> i have been keeping an eye on the cliff all year to see if there's been any further erosion. it sits in the back of your mind is it going to happen
6:37 am
soon? it happened just down here. >> reporter: that's tara. she lives on the cliffside so she worries about that erosion. so, you know, city crews they say is heavy rains and back-to- back storms. because when the ground is saturated, they see the erosion. but throughout the weekend city crews say they will have extra staff here. maria medina, kpix 5. new this morning nearly 150 protestors in north dakota were arrested when they clashed with police over a proposed pipeline.
