shoppers started throwing punches. a teenager filmed it and posted it on facebook. violence like this was at malls all across america. kpix 5's jackie ward reports from pleasant hill where police are investigating one of these fights. >> reporter: we are at the crossroads shopping mall a popular place to shop in pleasant hill. you can see where glass was shot out and bullets landed inside the walls of the building. it all happened around 9:15 last night the day after christmas. it's popular and the town sees little violence. right now police believe an argument led to a shooting in which multiple shots were fired hitting several storefronts with people inside. witnesses in the nearby starbucks said they saw a man bleeding who appeared to have been shot run toward the coffee shop and into a car. >> witnesses are indicating that the shooter and the victim
both fled the scene prior to the police arriving. >> reporter: the whereabouts of the victim and the shooter still remain unknown. shortly after the shooting, a toyota was reportedly driving extremely fast on highway 242. it has not been determined yet if this was the car the victim fled in. >> what's going on at the malls? >> reporter: other malls across the country experienced disorder yesterday, too. the cell phone video was taken in long island, new york. police say shoppers thought they heard gunshots and that's when melee ensued. it turns out all this commotion was caused by a food fight, not a shooting. 7 people were injured in what shoppers described as a stampede. so moving forward, police say they do plan on looking at some surveillance videos and so far in long island, no arrests have been made because of that stampede. in pleasant hill, jackie ward, kpix 5. time now 6:01. let's get a check of roads. >> thank you. chaos in the malls but not chaos on the roads.
let's take a look at your roads as you start your morning. starting with the bay area -- bay bridge toll plaza, those metering lights are on. but not much delay. the maze to downtown is a quick 11 minutes. and if you are traveling on the nimitz freeway in both directions still good from 880 northbound in san leandro from 238 to the maze at 16 minutes. southbound 880 to the san mateo bridge, this is slowed down due to a stalled car in the -- block the left lane westbound on the incline. it's still out there but 880 to 101 will now take 17 minutes. okay. moving over to the altamont pass, traffic coming off 205 not bad until you hit north flynn road down to 37 miles per hour. livermore to the dublin interchange slow. altamont pass to 680 will take you 15 minutes. now let's talk about mass transit. bart, ace train and caltrain are all on time this morning. but muni express buses most of them will not be running this week due to the holiday schedule so make sure you're
checking that as you head out this week and the larkspur ferry is on a reduced schedule. sausalito ferry is on a regular schedule. i have a brand-new view of sfo at 6:03 a.m. hi, everybody. take a look. it's absolutely stunning. it's the brand-new air traffic controller tower at sfo just opened up in october. it stands 221 feet tall. and it can actually -- it's a connector between terminals 1 and 2. and they have a nonsecure area here and they even built a brand-new yoga studio there. they did. open to the public. but meanwhile, this is the optimal view for the air traffic controllers for the airfield and from that tower this morning no reports of any local airport delays. santa rosa you are below freezing at 31 degrees. right there at sfo, we are at 40. it's 43 degrees in san francisco. also 40 in redwood city. low 50s around the rim of the bay for the most part. and livermore you were down to 31 degrees now up to 34.
but you still have that freeze warning in effect until 9:00 this morning for that huge red highlighted area which encompasses the north and east bay valleys. temperatures this morning up until 9:00 at or below freezing. but we will pan out to be a slightly warmer day today with the abundance of sunshine slight offshore flow temperatures in the mid-50s at the beaches. we are talking about a string of 50s anywhere from moss and montara beaches into half moon bay. daly city about 54 degrees also colma, south san francisco, mid- 50s in rockaway beach. atherton and woodside in the 50s. low 60s cupertino and campbell. sunnyvale at 60 degrees. high 50s around the neighborhoods around the lawrence expressway, back through willow glen. high 50s around the tri-valley today. mid-50s in antioch and
oaklandly and 50s common around the north bay. warmer in cloverdale. rain can coming up. more at 18 after the hour. roberta, thank you. a blast of winter weather is making it impossible for thousands of people to make it home from their christmas vacations. at minneapolis airport in minnesota, dozens of flights are canceled or delayed with winds reaching almost hurricane force. some pilots were having trouble keeping their planes steady trying to land. it was the same in the dakotas where huge piles of snow meant a good workout for anyone with a snow blower. >> i think i have done more this year than since i have owned the snow blower and i hand shoveled tons of snow. >> airports in the eastern part of the country may have the same problems as the system moves east. major concerns at the site of a southern california gas leak that forced hundreds of families out of their homes. methane was detected near the gas well in porter ranch that leaked for months during the
past year. the gas company says recent storms triggered the release of leftover methane trapped in the soil but people in the neighborhood are not buying it. >> they constantly give different information, misinformation and the information that comes out is unreliable. >> i feel that they are probably not telling us the truth when they are saying things like, well, it's just a residual from the last time. really? how do i know that? >> the gas company socal gas says this is not a leak and that there is no danger to the public. politics now this morning, the president-elect is responding to the current president who says that he would have won a third term and beaten donald trump if he could have run again. president obama also says he won't be staying quiet once he leaves the white house. >> reporter: into hypothetical presidential race, president- elect donald trump says there's no way he would lose to president obama citing jobs, isis and obamacare as the reasons on twitter. the comment came in response to a podcast interview the
president gave to his former senior adviser, suggesting the contrary. >> i'm confident that if i -- if i had run again and articulated it, i think i could have mobilized a majority of the american people to rally behind it. >> reporter: mr. trump has been at odds with the sitting president in recent weeks for weighing in on a number of foreign policy issues before officially taking office. >> abstention. >> reporter: yesterday he blasted the united nations as a club for people to have a good time. days after the u.n. voted to condemn israeli settlements. but the u.s. abstained instead of using its veto as it has in the past. trump signaled a break of policy on nuclear weapons tweeting last week that the u.s. needs to strengthen and expand its nuclear capabilities. 24 days before his inauguration, mr. trump is fiercely defending his charitable foundation. in a series of tweets monday night, he said the foundation never used donations to pay rent, salaries or any expenses. 100% was given to charities.
roxana saberi for cbs news. >> in a "washington post" investigation, it found that the foundation spent $258,000 to settle legal problems unrelated to the trump charity. and separately bought a portrait of donald trump. this afternoon a vallejo man accused of murder will come face to face with a judge. ishmael was expected to make a plea during his court appearance today. the 37-year-old was arrested this month for the shooting death of 35-year-old melissa owens. he and owens have a three-year- old child together. new details on the home in san mateo that went up in flames yesterday morning. the fire started just before 5 a.m. on newbridge avenue. the city reportedly already red- tagged that house because of safety violations. and there was another fire on property just last week. no one was in the home during the fire. in southern california, a massive criminal enterprise has been busted. police say that more than a dozen people have been arrested for stealing nearly 40 cars and
using them in other crimes. all of the cars were taken from an old costco parking lot in torrance california. it now acts as overflow storage for the nissan and infiniti of south bay car dealerships. the managing partner says he only learned about it when one of those stolen cars was used in a police chase and two accused gang members were arrested. >> they have apparently told other gangs about it, as they call it easy pickings. the next thing you knew we had other gangs coming in trying to steal the cars. >> gang members gradually stole dozens of cars starting about six weeks ago. torrance police say that they have arrested about 15 people tied to the thefts and they have recovered and returned 25 cars. it is now 6:09. a classic christmas dish leaves a sour taste in the mouth of a whole lot of disappointed californians. >> and the world war ii vet and taylor swift super fan who just got the surprise of a lifetime.

dozens of families spent hours crafting the perfect tamales but these christmas classics went into the trash because the masa was bad. now crowds are pushing for answers outside the market where they bought the ingredient. many people brought pots of their spoiled tamales as proof of the outrage. the family-run business has been apologizing and getting the masa tested but many customers wish they could shake the awful taste. >> i couldn't get the taste out of my mouth. i even took a little shot of, uhm, of apple cider vinegar, sodium by carbonate, different things to get the taste. it lingered for 10 hours. >> the grinch stole christmas. he stole the tamales. >> the store is offering full refunds plus $25 for every 20 pounds of masa purchased but it's closed until tomorrow since it ran out of cash.

if you are coming from marin county into san francisco that's 580 in san rafael to the golden gate toll plaza that will take 14 minutes and then traveling across the span of the bay bridge the metering lights were on and now they are not. traffic is moving smoothly across there. the maze to downtown will just take a quick 12 minutes. northbound 880 from 238 in san leandro to the maze. that's 16 minutes. traveling along southbound 880 that's looking good too on to the westbound 92 that's the san mateo bridge, 880 to 101 that will take you 14 minutes. just slowed down a bit due to a stalled car but that's been cleared out of the roads. moving on to the altamont pass, this is our slowest traffic of the morning. coming off 205 you're moving at 60 miles per hour. so that is good until you get to north flynn road where speeds go down to 40. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass will take 19 minutes on 580 westbound and then if you are traveling to the dublin interchange, here's a live look at that traffic moving nicely altamont pass to 68015 minutes. now to mass transit.

around the immediate seashore where you have the blue highlighted area in half moon bay. the northeast breeze which means the winds are blowing from our inland areas towards the coast. that's offshore. that's why it feels dry. the air mass has been drying out as the relative humidity tumbles. napa calm winchester at this hour. we'll experience an offshore wind later today 10 to 15. so we have some frosty temperatures sunny and cool albeit slightly warmer than yesterday by a couple of degrees and then saturday for the last day of the year, 2016, a chance of rain showers. right now we do have rain and snow combination of both the pacific northwest and this very large low pressure that trains all the way back out over the open waters. high pressure starting to build in from the west. low pressure with a pressure gradient so we have breezes late day but we'll see some of these clouds filter across the far reaches of the north bay

the holiday spirit has been getting spoiled by massive fights. kpix 5's jackie ward is live in pleasant hill where there was a shooting. >> reporter: behind me you can see a window shot out where that man is walking by and with bullets hit outside the stores in pleasant hill. it started at 9:15 last night. a shooting happened after an argument. >> not too many people are aware of it so far. an incident like this shakes up the community for sure. >> reporter: witnesses in the nearby starbucks told police they saw a man shot, bleeding and run toward the coffee shop into a car. police still don't know where the victim or shooter are located. [ chaos screaming ] >> reporter: also happening yesterday at a mall in aurora, colorado, cell phone cameras cappedture the commotion that
erupted -- captured the commotion that erupted. several fights broke out around 7:00 forcing the mall to close. people ran for the exits. police don't know the cause of that. they are investigating what happened. police here in pleasant hill are also investigating what happened last night. in pleasant hill, jackie ward, kpix 5. jackie is wearing gloves out there. that's how cold it is. >> we were talking about that yesterday at noon, she was wearing gloves. >> that's true. >> at sfo yesterday. gloves, scarf. it was 47 degrees with a bit of a breeze. making it feel like it's in the low 40s. it's cold out there. the national weather service issued a freeze warning in effect for many of our areas. let's see how chilly it is now. wow. that's a beautiful view isn't it? the sun is beginning to brighten up the sky interest. it's below freezing in santa rosa. yesterday at this hour it was 29. livermore at 34 degrees. but it was at 31 just two hours

"holiday light" along the bay bridge toll plaza from the carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will be a 20-minute drive but expect no delays through the
toll plaza. those metering lights are off and you're smooth sailing across the span into downtown san francisco. also a smooth drive across the nimitz in both directions 880 northbound from 238 in san leandro to the maze will take you 17 minutes. southbound 880 to westbound 92 the san mateo bridge, that commute is looking good too from hayward to foster city. that will take 15 minutes between 880 and 101. okay. now to our altamont pass traffic. the slowest traffic of the morning. but it's not even that slow. coming out of tracy off 205 you're moving at 60 miles per hour. and then once you hit north flynn road you're down to 46 miles per hour. so north tracy boulevard along 580 westbound to the altamont pass 17 minutes. frees up in livermore to the dublin interchange where it's good. altamont pass to 680, just 15 minutes. thanks. president-elect trump is again weighing in on the u.n.-israel resolution. his intervention in the issue last week drew some criticism that he was overstepping his
bounds. on twitter president-elect donald trump took aim at the united nations saying, the u.n. has such great potential but now it's just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. the resolution has also gotten harsh criticism from israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> it really is an outrageous resolution. we have ironclad information frankly that the obama administration really helped push this resolution and helped craft it. >> president obama's administration previously rejected similar accusations and israel has not offered specifics on their claims. police are searching for a stolen menorah. it was set up in washington square two weeks ago. this weekend it disappeared. while some jews are calling this a hate crime, many decided that the theft wouldn't crush their celebration of hanukkah. so they bought their own menorahs and brought it to washington square park.
>> everything about what we were trying to do is having the menorah rest next to the christmas tree was about inclusiveness and how inclusive "the holiday" is. and so that's the message again. everybody can come and enjoy it. >> sfpd thinks it was taken by a metal thief. two men facing homicide charges in hayward. 8:00 christmas eve night at the target store on whipple road. witnesses say two suspects got into an argument with a third man. it's unclear what it was about or if the two suspects knew the victim. in fresno two people are dead after a small plane crash. it happened shortly after take- off yesterday near the sierra sky park airport. the plane went down directly into the water of the san joaquin river just north of the runway. federal aviation administration records show that the plane was registered to a fresno man.
ntsb investigators are on the scene right now. it's not yet clear what caused that crash. >> after rains the access roads by the river are muddy and we have a few light vehicles down there, four-wheel drive that were able to drive down there, ems personnel and i think the supervisor first made contact with the victims in the aircraft. >> it took firefighters several hours to recover the bodies before they turned the scene over to the faa. police are searching for a gunman who opened fire at an uber driver in san francisco. >> he take out the gun and he shoot me. and, um, fortunately, the bullet just pass from my face. i afraid a lot because it the first time that they are trying to kill me. >> the driver based in sacramento now has injuries to his face from broken glass. but he is expected to recover. he says on saturday he was waiting for a passenger at oak and buchanan streets when a man
walked up and fired right through the windshield. police say there have been no arrests so far. happening today, warriors star steph curry takes a break from the court to give back. this afternoon, curry and his family will hand out 25-pound boxes of food and basics like shampoo and lotion in oakland. this will be the fourth year in a row that curry and his family have teamed up with feed the children to help bay area families during the holidays. >> and the san jose sharks are also giving back. >> that's right. the hockey team just made a $30,000 donation to help a peninsula high school special needs hockey team. the team posted this photo on twitter. not only did the sharks foundation give money to help the hockey group but it also invited them to watch the players. they checked out the locker room where they got new jerseys and equipment. it is 6:39. a frightening number of hypodermic needles are washing

good morning. we'll look at our satellite and radar maps because we have rain to the north of the bay area. snow in the higher elevations. cascades. an area of low pressure anchored off the coast of southern california. that means sunshine for us. we'll talk about your daytime highs and when you can expect rain. it's traffic and weather together in less than four minutes. in wisconsin, crews were in for a tricky rescue when ten fishermen got trapped on the ice. passing fishermen say that the locals got stuck because the ice started to break up much faster than they expected. by the time rescuers arrived,
heavy winds and choppy conditions meant reaching the men wouldn't be easy. somehow in about an hour the team imagined to rescue everyone of the locals without anybody taking a dip in the cold lake superior. a manhunt under way for an inmate who escaped through a hole at a tennessee jail. deputies released this mugshot. his name is david wayne frazier. authorities say he and five other inmates escaped on christmas day. they were able to remove a leaky toilet from the wall and crawl through the hole. >> they was able to kick out some concrete that was easily broken, along with some plumbing and some other things and they kicked occupy the steel box unit that was covering the outside of the access. >> and deputies say all of this happened in about 6 minutes! five of the inmates were recaptured yesterday. another tech company is jumping into the augmented reality game. and some retailers are offering
big christmas -- post-christmas discounts. jill wagner has that and more in this morning's moneywatch. >> reporter: the markets reopened after the holiday weekend. it will likely be another week of light trading. the dow is inching closer to 20,000. it rose another 14 points friday. the nasdaq gained 15. snapchat is snapping up a startup that specializes in augmented reality. snap reportedly paid up to $40 million for an israeli startup which says it's created the first augmented reality furniture showroom. it lets customers place a couch or table in their homes to see what it looks like before they actually buy it. >> ready set return! the national retail federation estimates that 10% of holiday gifts will go back and americans will return about 30% of gifts that were bought online. >> christmas has come and gone but that doesn't mean the deals are done. retailers are taking advantage of everyone returning gifts to make some more sales.
they are slashing prices on items that didn't sell well and getting a jump-start on their spring collection. and that's your cbsmoneywatch report. for more follow me on twitter at #jillwagnercbs. at the new york stock exchange, i'm jill wagner. time now 6:46. what's up, roqui? how's it looking out there? >> yeah, not much, maria. it's look pretty good out there so if you are heading out, you'll be fine. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. looking good into downtown san francisco from carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze that will take you 20 minutes. but expect no delays at the tolls. those metering lights are obviously off and you're looking good into downtown. now on the nimitz freeway you're looking good as well northbound 880 from 238 in san leandro to the maze will take you about 17 minutes and then if you are heading on southbound 880 to westbound 92 that's the san mateo bridge across the span, will take you 15 minutes between hayward to foster city. moving over to the altamont pass, traffic is actually lightening up from 205 in tracy moving at 51 miles per hour and then 57 miles per hour once you hit north flynn road.
north tracy boulevard along 580 westbound to the altamont pass 16 minutes into livermore. looking good onto the dublin interchange where it could be worse. altamont pass to 680 will just take you 15 minutes. let's move over to mass transit now. bart, ace and caltrain on time. but we have a couple of updates for you. things are still on the holiday schedule so make sure you're checking that as week goes on. muni express buses most of them not running this week due to the hovel. and also the larkspur ferry is on a reduced schedule but the sausalito ferry is on a regular schedule. that is your traffic. roberta, how's the weather? >> the sun is making an appearance in the east as it rises and things are brightening up. we're looking out from sutro tower looking north. the golden gate bridge is gorgeous. it's cold outside below freezing in santa rosa oakland around the rim of the bay pretty much in the 40s. livermore you have jumped up to 34 after experiencing an overnight low of 31 degrees.
again, it's 37 degrees in san jose. we do have a freeze warning in effect until 9:00 this morning for the red highlighted areas which does encompass the north and east bay valleys. temperatures plummeting below freezing in fact this morning checking in with our weather watchers. even though we had a freeze warning in the north and east bay, south bay the almaden valley is frosty experiencing below freezing temperatures overnight. linda says she is just dipped down to 29 degrees in fairfield. no wind to speak of. in fact, the winds are relatively calm have been pick up a gentle breeze in that blue highlighted area along the immediate seashore. when you see that northeast wind that means the winds are coming from our inland areas across the bay offshore. it dries out the atmosphere and that's why your skin may feel a little dry today. calm winds currently in napa but those winds will pick up out of the northeast five to 15 miles per hour. so it's another frost ee start toyour day. this a prolonged cold snap.

with some bullets hitting the side of storefronts that people were inside. >> this is the first shooting that it had in several months. it can happen anywhere at any time obviously. >> reporter: shortly after the shooting a toyota was reportedly driving extremely fast on highway 242. it has not been determined yet if this was the car that the victim took off in. the suspect and the gunmen are at large. what's going on at the malls?! >> other malls across the country experienced disorder yesterday, too. the cell phone video was taken in long island, new york where police say shoppers thought they heard gunshots and melee ensued. it turns out it was caused by a food fight, not a shooting. but the chaos led to 7 people injured in a stampede. police in long island say that now they will go and look back at the surveillance video to try to find out what happened and the cause of the stampede. in pleasant hill, jackie ward,
